Associations of Handgrip Strength and Handgrip Strength Asymmetry With Depression in the Elderly in Korea: A Cross-sectional Study

  • Objectives: Recent studies have suggested that assessing handgrip strength (HGS) asymmetry together with HGS may be helpful for evaluating problems in geriatric patients. This study aimed to identify whether HGS asymmetry, weakness, or both were associated with depression in Korean older adults. Methods: This study included 4274 subjects from the sixth and seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Depression was measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. The maximum HGS of the dominant hand was used as a representative value. HGS symmetry was categorized by the ratio of the HGS of the dominant hand to that of non-dominant hand. The odds ratio (OR) for depression was calculated according to the HGS and its symmetry. Results: In total, 240 (12.5%) men and 534 (22.7%) women had depression. HGS or HGS asymmetry showed no statistically significant associations with depression in elderly men. Elevated odds of depression were observed in elderly women with low HGS (OR, 1.93; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.33 to 2.81) or prominent HGS asymmetry (OR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.02 to 2.08). There was a positive additive interaction between asymmetric HGS and weakness, as women with low and prominently asymmetric HGS showed higher odds of depression (OR, 3.77; 95% CI, 2.16 to 6.59) than women with high and symmetric HGS. Conclusions: Depression in elderly Korean women was associated with both low and asymmetric HGS. Our findings support the potential value of HGS asymmetry as an indicator of HGS.

담배의 엽 발달 및 노화과정 중 이화학성 변화 (Changes of Physico-chemical Properties during the Leaf Development and Senescence of Tobacco Plant)

  • This experiment was conducted to obtain the basic information on the morphological and physiological changes in tobacco leaf during the growth period by measuring the changes of chlorophyll, sugar, lipid and mineral contents in tobacco plant. Leaf length and width have been fully developed at 25 days after leaf emergence. Dry weight was rapidly increased between 10 and 15 days after leaf emergence and reached the highest at 30 days. Crude lipid content, palmitic acid, and the major saturated fatty acid were increased with progressing senescence, while unsaturated fatty acid including linolenic acid was decreased as the senescence was advanced. The total nitrogen content showed the highest value at IS days after leaf emergence. On the other hand, the total sugar content showed the highest value at 45 days after leaf emergence and glucose, fructose and sucrose were decreased with leaf development and increased at the end of senescence. The content of chlorophyll showed the highest value at 15 days after leaf emergence and began to decrease at 30 days after leaf emergence. The contents of p, Cu, Zn, and Fe in tobacco leaves were decreased by the end of senescence after leaf emergence but those of Ca, Mg, and Mn in leaves were increased.   • This study was conducted during a period from July 4 to 30 to investigate the effect of restaurant environment upon customer's satisfaction and crowdedness awareness. Total 800sets of questionnaire were distributed among major food service corporations. They were 16 restaurants from McDonald, Burger King, Popeyes, KFC, Rits Carlton, Intercontinental, The Westin Chosun, Hilton, Merriot, Outback Steak House, Bennigans, VIPS, Pizza Hut Pul-hyanggi(Scent of grass), Nolboo Co.,, and Our Story, and received 50 see each to hand out to their customers. Out of total 800 sets of questionnaires, 592 sets (74.25% were retrieved and underwent a Multiple Regression Analysis. We found the following results from the study. First among each variable of restaurant environment that had a significant effect on the crowding, 'pTast service' and 'responsiveness to customer complaints' sooted a regression coefficient value 0.381 and 0.325 respectively. Second, among each restaurant environment factor that had a significant effect on crowding, 'quality of facility' sooted the highest regression coefficient value 0.423 with a standard error score 0.1074, fellowed by 'status of waiting', 'overall ambience' and 'service quality' in ascending order. Third, in the analysis of the effect of each environmental factor upon the satisfaction rate, 'status of waiting' showed the highest regression coefficient value 0.3821 with a standard error score 0.4565, followed by 'cleanliness', 'service quality' and 'conveniency', in ascending order.

A simple method to optimize DC-bus capacitor in 3-phase shunt Active power filter system

  • This paper introduces a shunt active power filter with a small DC bus capacitor by adding additional low-pass filter (LPF). The DC link voltage fluctuation is impressively suppressed with a small value in spite of the low value of DC-link capacitor under the steady-state condition. Consequently, the cost and volume of power converter are significantly reduced thanks to the reduced value of DC-bus capacitor. On the other hand, an indirect control strategy is used to maintain grid-side current when non-linear loads are connected to the system. By using proportional-integral (PI) and modified repetitive controller (RC) in dq0 frame, the calculation time is greatly decreased by 6 times compared with the conventional RC, and the number of measurement devices is also minimized. As a result, the acquired total harmonic distortion (THD) is lower than 2% regardless of the load conditions. Simulation results are carried out in order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Phytochemical and Antioxidant Properties of Korean Wheat Sprouts

  • Wheat is an economically important cereal worldwide and is a staple food in many countries. Extensive researches have been performed on the nutritional value and antioxidant potentials of sprouts of legumes like soybean, however very limited studies have been carried out on the sprouts of Korean wheat cultivar. The objective of this study was to investigate the phytochemical and antioxidant potentials of Korean wheat sprouts. The sprouts were grown for 10 (WS-10), 20 (WS-20), and 30 (WS-30) days at room temperature. The pH, color, chlorophyll, free amino acid, 1,1-diphenly-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and total polyphenol content of the sprout samples were determined. The pH of sprouts was increased in the older sprouts. Color values were significantly influenced by the age of sprouts. The chlorophyll content was lowest but the total free amino acid content was highest in WS-30. On the other hand, the DPPH free radical scavenging potential and total polyphenol content were lower in WS-30. The results suggested that Korean wheat sprouts could be a potential source of nutrients and natural antioxidants.

Effects of Gas Composition on the Performance and Emissions of Compressed Natural Gas Engines

  • Natural gas is considered to be a promising alternative fuel for passenger cars, truck transportation and stationary engines providing positive effects both on the environment and energy security. However, since the composition of natural gas fuel varies with location, climate and other factors, it is anticipated that such changes in fuel properties will affect emission characteristics and performance of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) engines. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of the difference in gas composition on the engine performance and emission characteristics. The results show that THC (Total Hydrocarbon) decreases with increasing Wl (Wobbe Index) and MCP (Maximum Combustion Potential). On the other hand, it is observed that NOx slightly increases as Wl and MCP increase. The TLHV (Total Lower Heating Value of Intake) is proposed in this study as a potential index for compatibility of gas fuels in a CNG engine. There is a variation in power up to 20% depending on the composition of gas when the A/F ratio and spark timing are flexed for a specific gas fuel.

Effects of Seeding Dates on Yield and Feed Value of Italian Ryegrass in Paddy Field Cultivation

  • This study was carried out to investigate the influence of the seeding dates on the yield and feed value in cultivating Italian rye grass on paddy soil. The field experiment was designed in a randomized block design of 3 repetitions with seeding dates of Oct. 19 (T1), Oct. 26 (T2), Nov. 2 (T3), Nov. 9 (T4), and Nov. 16 (T5) treatments. Plant length, fresh yield, dry matter yield and TDN yield were increased with early seeding dates (p<0.05). Crude protein, Crude fat and crude ash were increased with early seeding dates (p<0.05). On the other hand, NDF, ADF and Crude fiber were decreased with early seeding dates (p<0.05). Total mineral contents were higher in the order of T4 > T3 > T5 > T1 > T2 (p<0.05). The total composition amino acid content was decreased significantly (p<0.05) as the seeding dates delayed. Total free sugar content was highest in T1, whereas the lowest in T5 treatment (p<0.05). Nutrition yields (crude protein, crude fat, amino acid and free sugar) were increased significantly with early seeding dates (p<0.05). The above result indicated that it is favorable to seed soon after rice harvest to increase dry matter yield and nutrition yield of Italian ryegrass in the midlands.

Effects of vacuum and high-oxygen modified atmosphere packaging on physico-chemical and microbiological properties of minced water buffalo meat

  • Objective: In this study, the effects of vacuum (VP) and high-oxygen modified atmosphere ($80%\;O_2+20%\;CO_2$) packaging (HiOx-MAP) on physico-chemical and microbiological properties of minced water buffalo meat were investigated. Methods: After minced meat preparation, samples were packaged under VP and HiOx-MAP and stored at $2^{\circ}C{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ for 14 days. Samples taken on certain days were subjected to total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, total aerobic psychrotrophic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, Pseudomonas, Enterobacteriaceae and yeast-mold counts as well as pH, color ($L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) analyses. Results: In minced water buffalo meat packaged under HiOx-MAP, TBARS value exceeded 1 mg malondialdehyde/kg on the 4th day of the storage. In VP samples, TBARS value remained close to initial TBARS value during storage. According to the findings, $a^*$ value was determined to be high in the HiOx-MAP samples within initial days of the storage. However, no significant changes in $a^*$ value were observed in VP samples during storage. In contrast, the mean value of $L^*$ was detected as higher in HiOx-MAP sample than VP samples. The count of psychrotrophic bacteria increased more than that of mesophilic bacteria during storage. The growth of Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas was delayed in both the packaging methods. However, lactic acid bacteria exhibited more growth in VP samples compared to MAP samples. Conclusion: The lipid oxidation proceeded faster than expected in minced water buffalo meat packed with HiOx-MAP method. This situation adversely affected the $a^*$ value. On the other hand, similar microbiological results were obtained in both packing methods.

들깨 종자의 발아에 따른 단백질 및 지방의 조성 변화 (Changes of Protein and Lipid Composition During Germination of Perilla frutescens Seeds)

  • To investigate changes in protein and total lipid contents, seed storage protein pattern, and fatty acid composition of germination perilla(Perilla frutescens) seeds. Also, the corresponding value components in cotyledons, hypocotyles and roots were measured according to germination stage. The results were summarized as follows ; During germination, pertein and total lipid contents of Yepsilldalggae and Kwangyang cultivar were decreased continuously. In particular, protein contents rapidly decreased to the 3 days after germination(DAG), and then total lipid contents rapidly decreased between 3 DAG and 10 DAG. In changes of protein and total lipid contents of cotyledons, protein contents of Yeupsildalggae was increased during the germination, but Kwangyang cultivar was decreased during the same periods. The total lipids contents of Yeupsildalggae and Kwangyang cultivar were decreased during the germination. According to SDS-PAGE analysis, there was no detectible polypeptide bands on the gel before seed germination suggesting that this may be due to the rapid degradation of the storage proteins in the mature seed by hydrolyttic enzymes during the stage. During germinatation , the polypeptide band with 27$\sim$28KD of Yeupsildalggae and Kwangyang cultivar were accumulated gradually. In changes of fatty acid composition of total lipid of Yeupsildalggae and Kwangyang cultivar , saturated fatty acids such as palmitic acid and stearic acid increased during the germination. On the other hand, unsaturated fatty acid such as linoleic acid and linolenic acid decreased during the same periods. However, oleic acid increased to the 5 DAG, and then was repidly decreased.
