  • To investigate the effects of krill and cadmium on lipid composition of plasma in cholesterol-fed rats, male Sprague-Dawley rats were raised for 4 weeks with 8 experimental diets. The cholesterol, ${\beta}-lipoprotein$, phospholipid and triglyceride concentration of plasma in rats fed krill diets containing below 5%9w/w) krill were not significant differences in comparison with those of control diet. The ingestion of cadmium caused a significant increase in free cholesterol 91.6-fold), triglyceride 91.6-fold), ${\beta}-lipoprotein$(1.4-fold) and total cholesterol (1.3-fold) level, and then HDL-cholesterol concentration of cadmium diet was 1.6-fold lower than that of control diet. The krill supplement of cadmium diet rather resulted in a increase in total cholesterol, free cholesterol, ${\beta}-lipoprotein$ and triglyceride concentration of plasma.

  • Among the many deleterious effects of cardiopulmonary bypass[CPB], deterioration of plasma lipoprotein is a significant problem. Break-down of lipoprotein releases free fatty acids into the systemic circulation which, in turn, can cause microembolism. This study conducted on 30 patients undergoing CPB, was designed to elucidate the changes of plasma lipoproteins during and after CPB. Blood samples were taken at pre-CPB, on-CPB 30 minutes and 60 minutes, postoperative 1st, 3rd, 7th days. The levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride were measured and lipoprotein was subdivided into three kinds on electrophoresis. During CPB, the amounts of plasma total cholesterol and triglyceride decreased significantly and were recovered to pre-CPB levels after postoperative third day. There was no significant correlation between the duration and the severity of decrease in plasma total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. During CPB, the fraction of VLDL decreased and that of LDL increased. After cessation of CPB, the fraction of LDL decreased and that of HDL increased. After postoperative 1st day, the fraction of HDL decreased and that of LDL increased.

  • The effects of Okcheonsan powder on the body weights, the organ weights, the blood glucose level, the lipid and protein concentrations of serum and liver in diabetic rats were studied. Female rats (Sprague-Dawley, mean weight 313.6$\pm$18.5 g) were randomly assigned to one normal and two diabetic groups. They were fed experimental diets for 5 weeks. The diabetic groups were divided into the diabetic control (D-control group) and 3% Ok-cheonsan groups (D-Okcheonsan group). Rats were injected with streptozotocin intraperitoneally to induce diabetes. The body weights, the concentrations of total lipid and triglyceride of liver, the concentrations of total protein and albumin of serum in tole D-control and the D-Okcheonsan groups were significantly decreased compared with those in the normal group. The pancreatic weight in the D-control group was significantly more increased than that in the D-Okcheonsan group, but in the D-Okcheonsan group it was similar to that in the normal group. The fasting blood glucose levels and the atherogenic index in all the diabetic groups were significantly higher than those in the normal group. The concentrations of triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol of serum, and the cholesterol of fiver in the D-Okcheonsan group were significantly lower than those in the D-control group. The concentration of HDL-cholesterol and HDL-cholestrol/total cholesterol ratio of serum were similar to those in all the groups. The concentrations of phospholipid of serum and liver in the D-Okcheonsan group were significantly decreased compared with those of the normal group, In conclusion, the Okcheonsan powder feeding could decrease the pancreatic weight, the concentrations of the triglyceride, the total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol of serum, and the cholesterol of liver in the diabetic rats. But the concentrations of the blood glucose, the hepatic triglyceride and the atherogenic index seems to be not affected by it.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of diet (1:1 ratio) added with meat product (seasoning chicken product, patty) containing natural extracts (green tea, Schizandra chinensis) on body weights, internal organs weights, the contents of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride and total lipid in plasma and liver. The experimental diets were prepared with basal diet added with $1\%$ natural extracts. These diets were supplied to SD (Sprague-Dawley) rats for 45 days. The body weight of SD rats supplied seasoning chicken and patty containing green tea and Schizandra chinensis tended to be lower than that of SD rats dieted seasoning chicken product and patty product. The contents of plasma cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride and total lipid were decreased in SD rats dieted seasoning chicken and patty with green tea and Schizandra chinensis. However, the contents of plasma cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride and total lipid tended to be increased in SD rats supplied seasoning chicken product and patty only. Hepatic lipid peroxidation measured by TBARS method was not different, compared to that of control. In conclusion, the diets with meat products containing $1\%$ natural extracts were effective in reducing plasma and hepatic cholesterol levels in rats.

  • This study was performed to investigate the changes of the serological parameters of the rats fed a high fat and high cholesterol diets with or without quercetin supplement for five weeks. Thirty Sprague-Dawley male rats ($152.1{\pm}17.0\;g$ of body weight) were randomly divided into three groups with 10 rats in each group. Rats in the control(C) group were fed the high fat and high cholesterol diet containing 15% lard, 2% cholesterol and 0.5% sodium cholate (w/w). Rats in two treatment groups were fed the same diet supplemented with 0.25% quercetin (Q-0.25) or 0.5% quercetin (Q-0.5) on the weight to weight basis, respectively. The final body weight, gain of body weight, the amount of feed intake and the feed efficiency of rats in between control and treatment groups were not significantly different. Serum glucose, total protein, albumin, globulin and albumin/globulin (A/G) ratio of rats showed no significant differences between control and treatment groups. Serum total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and atherogenic index(AI) of rats in both Q-0.25 and Q-0.5 groups were significantly lower than in C group (p < 0.05). However serum high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) was significantly higher in both Q-0.25 and Q-0.5 groups than in C group (p < 0.05). The levels of triglyceride in sera of rats showed no significant differences between control and treatment groups. The values of AST and ALT in sera of rats showed no significant differences between control and treatment groups. Therefore the supplementation of quercetin to high fat and high cholesterol diet in rats was effective in reducing the levels of serum lipids to cause cardiovascular diseases and in elevating the level of HDL-C to protect cardiovascular diseases.

  • This study was aimed to investigate whether or not black soybean supplements affect levels of lipid profiles and female hormone (estradiol; E2, estrogen; Es) in 57 middle-aged women (in their 40s and 50s). All subjects were randomly assigned to the control or black soybean supplement group (BSS group). The BSS group was allocated to use dietary black soybean supplements (100 g/day) for 8 weeks. The BSS subjects were divided into two subgroups; 14 women were in the premenopausal group and 15 were in the postmenopausal group. We measured lipid profiles, female hormones and nutrient intakes at 0 weesk and 8 weeks. After 8 weeks, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol was significantly decreased (P<0.01) and the athrogenic index (AI) was significantly increased (P<0.01) in control group. In BSS group, triglyceride (TG) (P<0.05), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (P<0.01) and LDL-HDL ratio (LHR) (P<0.01) were significantly decreased. However, E2 and Es were significantly increased (P<0.01). Compared to the control group, the BSS group revealed statistically significant improvements in the levels of TG, HDL-cholesterol, AI, LHR, E2 and Es (P<0.05). In the premenopausal group, HDL-cholesterol (P<0.05), E2 (P<0.01) and Es (P<0.05) were significantly increased and AI (P<0.01) and LHR (P<0.01) were significantly decreased after 8 weeks. In the postmenopausal group, E2 (P<0.05), and Es (P<0.05) were significantly decreased. However, total cholesterol (TC) was increased (P<0.01). Compared to the postmenopausal group, the premenopausal group was significantly improved on HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and LHR (P<0.05). In conclusion, black soybean supplements may have beneficial effects on improving lipid profiles and female hormones.

  • Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) is a standardized extract of Ginkgo biloba leaves and has anti- atherosclerosis properties. Many patients with atherosclerosis disorders take Ginkgo biloba extracts to supplement current therapy. In addition, normal healthy individuals also take Ginkgo biloba extracts for prophylactic purposes. However, it is unknown whether supplementation of Gingko biloba extracts in healthy individuals offer a benefit. In this study, we assessed whether EGb 761 could provide beneficial effects on serum cholesterol levels in normal mice. Wild-type C56Bl/6 mice were orally administered EGb 761 at 25 mg/kg (Group 3) or 50 mg/kg (Group 4) every other day for 40 days. We found that the serum levels of HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) were significantly increased in EGb 761 and lovastatin treated groups. Treatment with EGb 761 and lovastatin resulted in reduced serum total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) compared to control group. Serum lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) levels were higher in EGb 761 and lovastatin treated group compared to the control group. However, no difference was observed in serum APO A-I levels between the control group and treatment group. These results suggest that EGb 761 can increase HDL-C resulting in increased serum LCAT levels.

  • This is a cross-sectional study to evaluate the serum lipid levels of children living in Pusan in 1996. The distribution of age is from 2 years old to 12 years old. In female children mean total cholesterol is $171.4{\pm}26.2mg/dl$, triglyceride is $104.7{\pm}50.6mg/dl$, HDL-cholesterol is $54.4{\pm}14.8mg/dl$, and LDL-cholesterol is $95.4{\pm}32.9mg/dl$. In male children mean total cholesterol is $167.9{\pm}25.2mg/dl$, triglyceride is $6{\pm}45.5mg/dl$, HDL-cholesterol is $55.4{\pm}11.7mg/dl$, and LDL-cholesterol is $94.4{\pm}23.6mg/dl$. The percentile of serum lipid levels is measured in children. The 95th percentile of serum total cholesterol is 210mg/d1 in male children, and 214mg/d1 in female children. And, the 95th percentile of serum triglyceride is 184mg/d1 in male children, and 191mg/d1 in female children. And, the 95th percentile of LDL-cholesterol is 133mg/d1 in male children, and 135mg/d1 in female children. Serum total cholesterol is positively .Elated to age(r=0.18), height(r=0.08), weight (r=0.17), obesity index(r=0.12), and negatively .elated to father's education level (r=-0.13), mother's education level(r=-0.13). Serum triglyceride is positively related to weight(r=0.23), age(r=0.31) and negatively .elated to father's education level(r=-0.12), mother's education level(r=-0.18). Serum HDL-C was positively reated to mother's education level(r=0.07) and negatively .elated to height(r=-0.12), weight(r=-0.09). Conclusively, the serum lipid levels of children living in Pusan is generally so high that the family and school must try to control the serum lipid levels.
