To determine the amount of total bromide as 2-bromoethanol, the domestic agricultural products such as rice, barley, carrot, cucumber, apple, tomato, squash, green pepper, melon, strawberry, grape, peach, potato and celery were analyzed by GC/MSD as well as GC/ECD. The bromide was detected in most of the domestic samples and the highest bromide residue determined was 13.2 ppm in barley. The imported agricultural products including melon, kiwi, lemon, pineapple, banana, orange and grape were also analyzed for the bromide. The bromide was also detected in most of the imported ones and the highest bromide residue determined was 12.3 ppm in pineapple. In addition, the bromide residue in instant noodle spices was monitored for 4 years, recently. As results, in 1994, the bromide content was in the range of non-detection to 2.4 ppm (average 1.1 ppm) from 22 out of 24 samples; in 1995, the bromide content was 1.0 and 2.2 ppm from 2 out of 37 samples; in 1996, the bromide content was in the range of 0.7 to 37 ppm (average 12.4 ppm) from all 11 samples; and in 1997, the bromide content was in the range of 0.2 to 4.6 ppm (average 1.2 ppm) from all 59 samples. However, none of sample analyzed for the bromide was exceeded Maximum Residue Limit(s) of Korea and Codex in these survey.
This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of trihalomethane (THM) formation from chlorination of groundwater in the northeastern area of Cheju Island. Effects of total organic carbon (TOC) and bromide in groundwater on the THM formation were studied. Samples were taken from two regions withe altitude. The concentrations of TOC and bromide in groundwater were higher at the regions of lower altitude, especially at the altitude below 50m. Generally the THM formation in GA region containing a high TOC was higher than that in GB region containing a relatively high bromide. At the altitude below 100m, the formation of total and brominated THM was highest at GB region. The most part of THM formation was brominated THM at GB region. The formation ratio of chloroform and brominated THM was similar to the others. Among the brominated THM, dibromochloromethane and bromoform in GB region were containing high bromide. Bromodichloromethane and dibromochloromethane in GA region were containing low bromide. At the altitude above 200m, chloroform was formed mainly. Comparing the ratio of brominated THM of total THM in Cheju Island with that in other areas, Seoul and Pusan, it can be konwn that the former showing 51.3% was much higher than the latter showing 6.7% and 28.8%, respectively.

Methyl bromide has been used as a representative fumigant for quarantine, and several poisoning cases have occurred recently by this chemical in Korea. The purpose of this study is to evaluate workers' exposures to airborne methyl bromide in the importing and exporting plant products quarantine companies. Air samples were collected 400/200 mg Anasorb 747TM and were analyzed by gas chromatograph /flame ionization detector according to the Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) Method PV2040. Geometric mean (GM) and arithmetic mean (AM) of total 27 workers' exposure concentrations to airborne methyl bromide were 1.12 ppm and 0.24 ppm, respectively. Two exposures(12.1 ppm and 12 ppm as 8hr-TWA) of total 27 workers' exposures exceeded the Korean standard (5 ppm) of Ministry Labor, while 4 exposures (15%) exceeded the Threshold Limit Value (TLV) (1 ppm) of American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). Seven samples (11%) of total 63 short-term air samples exceeded the OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) 20 ppm (Ceiling). The opening (management) task in wood fumigation by tent showed the highest short-term exposure concentrations (AM: 18.6 ppm, GM: 0.58 ppm, maximum: 340.7 ppm). The maximum level in treatment task of the same process was 2.01 ppm. Methyl bromide concentrations in opening operation was significantly higher than that in treatment operation (p<0.05). In conclusion, the GM of workers' 8hr-TWA exposures to airborne methyl chloride in the importing/exporting plant quarantine industry was estimated below the ACGIH TLV (1 ppm). However, opening task in the fumigation of wood being covered with tent or fumigation of pant products in container showed the levels exceeding ACGIH TLV (1 ppm), and opening task in the fumigation of wood being covered with tent showed the level exceeding the Korean standard of Ministry of Labor (5 ppm).

Background: Efficacy and safety of tiotropium bromide, a muscarinic receptor antagonist, in treatment of asthma have been reported. However, its effect on airway remodeling in chronic asthma of the elderly has not been clearly verified. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of tiotropium and expression of muscarinic receptors as its related mechanism in an aged mouse model of chronic asthma with airway remodeling. Methods: BALB/c female mice age 6 weeks, 9 and 15 months were sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin (OVA) for three months. Tiotropium bromide was administered during the challenge period. Airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and pulmonary inflammation were measured. Parameters of airway remodeling, and expression levels of $M_2$ and $M_3$ receptors were examined. Results: Total cell with eosinophils, increased in the OVA groups by age, was decreased significantly after treatment with tiotropium bromide, particularly in the age group of 15 months. AHR and levels of interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, and IL-13 were decreased, after tiotropium administration. In old aged group of 9- and 15-months-treated groups, hydroxyproline contents and levels of ${\alpha}$-smooth muscle actin were attenuated. Tiotropium enhanced the expression of $M_2$ but decreased expression of $M_3$ in all aged groups of OVA. Conclusion: Tiotropium bromide had anti-inflammatory and anti-remodeling effects in an aged mouse model of chronic asthma. Its effects seemed to be partly mediated by modulating expression $M_3$ and $M_2$ muscarinic receptors. Tiotropium may be a beneficial treatment option for the elderly with airway remodeling of chronic asthma.

Objective: Methyl bromide (MB) fumigant has been shown to be fatal to human when was exposed. However, it were still used the significant amount in quarantine disinfection sites. The purposes of this study were to assess the MB exposure status and characteristics by fumigation-related workers and to provide supporting data for management plan. Methods: For this study, the three groups related to fumigation work were composed. A total of 107 workers were directly exposed, 20 field inspectors were indirect, and 20 general quarantines were not exposed. The urinary bromide ion concentrations in each group were analyzed by using HPLC/ICP-MS, and the working characteristics were identified using the structured questionnaire. Results: The urinary bromide ion concentration in the exposed group of fumigation workers was higher than the indirect and non-exposed groups. In the work characteristics of workers, there was a significant tendency to increase urinary bromide ion concentrations with higher fumigation work years (≤4 years: 2.84 (1.13-7.11) mg/g cr, >4-15 years: 5.36 (4.37-6.57) mg/g cr, >15-37 years: 6.69 (5.27-8.49) mg/g cr, p=0.034). In the comparison of the average number of working days per month, the more working days, the higher the urinary bromide ion concentration was statistically significant (≤12.5 days: 2.59 (1.19-5.65) mg/g cr, >12.5-19.25 days: 5.46 (4.62-6.44) mg/g cr, >19.25-27.25 days: 7.93 (5.93-10.59) mg/g cr, p=0.002). Conclusion: This study was the first nationwide survey including biological monitoring in workers exposed to methyl bromide. The results of this study were expected to be used as a reference for workers' health rights in relation to fumigation, prevention of addiction accidents, and safe management plan.
Comparative effects of gamma irradiation and methyl bromide (MBr) fumigation on disinfestation and some physicochemical attributes of acorn seeds were investigated. Insects in domestic acorns were identified to be Curculio dentipes Roelofs and Dichocrocis punctiferalis Guenee, which were easily disinfestated immediately after commercial MBr fumigation. Irradiation also showed similar effects on mortality of the insects in different post-irradiation periods; at 3rd day with doses of 1-3 kGy and at around 30th day 0.5-1 kGy. MBr fumigation caused the decrease in lightness (Hunter L value), total phenolics and reducing sugars and the increase in yellowness (Hunter b value) and browning intensity for the subjected samples, as compared with the nontreated control and irradiated ones at 0.5-2 kGy. Furthermore, MBr fumigation resulted in decay for the most part of samples during storage at 5-10 $^{\circ}C$ for 6 months in a PVC box packaging with nets. As a result, optimum levels of irradiation is expected to be roe of the alternatives to chemical fumigants.
Background: Rocuronium bromide has been evaluated as a mydriatic agent in birds, but the species applied were limited and the dose and effect were variable. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of topical rocuronium bromide as mydriatics in 4 species according to horizontal palpebral fissure length: Feral pigeon (Columba livia), Common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), Northern boobook (Ninox japonica), and Eurasian eagle owl (Bubo bubo). Methods: A total of 32 birds (8 for each species) were included as pre-releasing examination. Rocuronium bromide was instilled in one randomly selected eye of each bird based on palpebral fissure length criteria (0.5 mg/50 µL for pigeons, 1 mg/100 µL for kestrels and boobook owls, and 2 mg/200 µL for eagle owls). The contralateral eye was used as control and treated with normal saline. After instillation of the drug, pupil diameter, pupillary light reflex, intraocular pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate were evaluated at 10 min intervals up to 180 min and at 30 min intervals up to 360 min. Results: Statistically significant mydriasis was obtained in all birds (p < 0.001). However, in boobook and eagle owls, marked mydriasis persisted until 360 min. Side effects including corneal erosion and lower eyelid paralysis were common, which was observed in 26/32 birds. Blepharospasm was also noted during this study. No systemic adverse signs were observed. Conclusions: Rocuronium bromide could be a good mydriatics option for 4 species of birds, however, further studies are needed to find lowest effective dose to reduce drug-related side effects.

Background: Neutrophilic asthma (NeuA) is usually resistant to corticosteroids. Tiotropium bromide (TIO) is a bronchodilator that is used as an add-on therapy to inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting β2 agonist in asthma treatment. However, the role of TIO in NeuA is not fully known. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of TIO on NeuA compared to that of corticosteroids. Methods: C57BL/6 female mice were sensitized with ovalbumin and lipopolysaccharide to induce neutrophilic inflammation. Dexamethasone (DEX) was administered on days 14, 17, 20, and 23. TIO was inhaled on days 21, 21, and 23. On day 24, mice were sacrificed. Airway hyper-responsiveness, levels of cytokines in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and lung homogenates, and lung tissue histopathology were compared between the two groups. Results: Neutrophil counts, T helper 2 cells (TH2)/TH17 cytokines, and pro-inflammatory cytokine in BAL fluids were elevated in the NeuA group. TIO group showed lower total cells, neutrophil counts, and eosinophil counts in BAL fluids than the DEX group (p<0.001, p<0.05, and p<0.001, respectively). Airway resistance was attenuated in the TIO group but elevated in the NeuA group (p<0.001). Total protein, interleukin (IL)-5, and IL-17A levels in BAL fluids were lower in the TIO group than in the NeuA group (all p<0.05). Conclusion: TIO showed more potent effects than DEX in improving airway inflammation and attenuating airway resistance in NeuA.
Background: In Korea, patients with destroyed lung due to tuberculosis (TB) account for a significant portion of those affected by chronic pulmonary function impairment. The objective of our research was to evaluate the efficacy of inhaled tiotropium bromide in TB destroyed lung. Methods: We compared the effectiveness of inhaled tiotropium bromide for 2 months between pre- and post-treatment pulmonary function tests performed on 29 patients with destroyed lung due to TB. Results: The mean age of the total number of patients was $63{\pm}9$ years, where 15 patients were male. The pre-treatment mean forced expiratory volume in 1 second ($FEV_1$) was $1.02{\pm}0.31L$ ($44.1{\pm}16.0%$ predicted). The pre-treatment mean forced vital capacity (FVC) was $1.70{\pm}0.54L$ ($52.2{\pm}15.8%$ predicted). Overall, the change in $FEV_1%$ predicted over baseline with tiotropium was $19.5{\pm}19.1%$ (p<0.001). Twenty patients (72%) got better than a 10% increase in $FEV_1$ over baseline with tiotropium, but one patient showed more than a 10% decrease in $FEV_1$. Overall, the change in FVC% predicted over baseline with tiotropium was $18.5{\pm}19.9%$ (p<0.001). Seventeen patients (59%) experienced greater than a 10% increase in FVC over baseline with tiotropium; 12 (41%) patients had stable lung function. Conclusion: The inhaled tiotropium bromide therapy may lead to improve lung functions in patients with TB destroyed lung. However, the long-term effectiveness of this treatment still needs to be further assessed.
Glycosidation of 20(S)-protopanaxadiol obtained by the alkaline hydrolysis of total ginsenosides with 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-${\alpha$-D-glucopyranosyl bromide in the presence of $CdCO_3$ in benzene-dioxane gave a mixture of acetylated monoglucosides and diglucosides in a total yield of 68%. Under the same condenstion condition, 20-dehydroxyglucosides were formed by dehydration of 12-O-glucosides. The structures of produced glycosides were elucidated as 3-O-${\beta$-D-glucopyranosyl-20(S)-protopanaxadiol, 12-O-${\beta$-D-glucopyranosyl-dammar-20(22), 24-dien-$3{\beta},12{\beta}$-diol, 3,12-di-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosyl-dammar-20(22), 24-dien-$3{\beta},\;12{\beta}$-diol, respectively.
