  • As for the marine propulsion shafting system using 4 stroke diesel engine, it is common to apply a reduction gear box between diesel engine and shafting to increase propulsion efficiency, which requires inevitably a certain elastic coupling to avoid chattering and hammering inside of gear box. In this study, the optimum method of rectifying propulsion shafting system in case of 750 ton fishing vessel is theoretically studied in a view of dynamic characteristics of torsion. After the replacement of diesel engine and gear box, the torsional vibration get worse and so some countermeasures are needed. The elastic coupling is modified from a present rubber coupling of block type having relatively high torsional stiffness to a rubber coupling haying two serially connected elements. Torsional vibration damper was installed at crankshaft free end additionally and moment of inertia of flywheel was adjusted. The dynamic characteristics of shafting system was improved by these modification. The theoretical analysis of torsional vibration are compared to measurement results using two laser torsion meters during the sea trial.

  • A cylindrical composite lattice structure is manufactured by filament winding. The distribution of nonuniform fiber volume fraction induced by the manufacturing process can be observed. The stiffness and buckling characteristics can be influenced by non-uniform fiber volume fraction. In this paper, the effect of non-uniform fiber volume fraction through thickness direction on the torsional buckling load of the cylindrical composite lattice structure was examined. The stiffness variation induced by the non-uniform fiber volume fraction was applied to the finite element model, and buckling analysis was performed. The variations of buckling load with variations of fiber volume fraction were compared. The non-uniform fiber volume fraction reduced the torsional buckling load of the composite lattice structure.

  • Torsional behavior of eccentric structure under seismic loading may cause the stress and/or deformation concentration. Hence it is hard to estimate the seismic behavior of the structure with plan irregularity. This study suggests the method to setup the seismic fragility curve of the torsionally irregular structures. The suggested fragility curve may be acquired from the fragility surface defined on the D-R plan according to the estimated torsional behavior. The torsional behavior is predicted considering the inelastic region by adapting the inelastic stiffness of each wall. Finally the system displacement is converted to the spectral acceleration and the fragility curve for the seismic excitation level is presented. In addition, the fragility curve considering the excitation direction is proposed.

  • A carbon/epoxy composite drive shaft used for the power transmission of the automobiles with steel joints. Compared with the metallic drive shaft, the composite one has the weight saving of 50% with equivalent torsional strength and fatigue characteristics. In this study, the filament winding technique for the composite tube and composite/metal joining technique are estabilished. The performance test of the drive shaft is carried out. The optimal condition of the surface roughness of the steel adherend was $1.5{{\mu}m}$ to $2.5{{\mu}m}$, and the optimal condition of the bonding thickness was 0.15mm. Maximum torque and torsional stiffness of the composite drive shaft manufactured by filament winding process were found to be $210kg{\cdot}m$ and $18.5kg{\cdot}m/deg$, respectively.

  • In this paper, numerical method of evaluating the influence of Dual Mass Flywheel(DMFW) to the torsional vibration of the automotive power train system is developed. And we applied the procedure to the currently being developed HMC's DMFW attached to an FF car to find out the best performance characteristics during the Tip-in/Tip-out operating condition. In doing this we compared the numerical results with the experimental results and Performed Parametric studies. We find out that the torsional vibrational characteristics of power train system can be significantly improved when we optimally choose DMFW, and the developed numerical procedure could be used as valuable tools in developing new DMFW.

  • In this paper, we present a novel approach for tuning the resonant frequency of torsionally driven vertical comb actuators. The tuning unit composed of thermal actuator, scissor mechanism and V-shape shaft enables continuous and reversible resonant frequency tuning. The proposed method is based on the stiffness alteration of the V-shape shaft. It is experimentally verified that the resonant frequency of the torsional microscanner is shifted up to 1.59 kHz from 1.51 kHz showing the maximum tuning ratio of 5.29%.

  • Gear rattle is a source of vibration and noise in automotive gearbox casing and generally occurs at or near system resonant frequencies. The neutral gear rattle of the gearbox. is affected by the stiffness and hysteresis torque in the clutch disk and drag torque determining balancing point of the clutch disk operating range. The experiment is carried out in the pre-damper type clutch and a manual transmission of a automobile equipped for inline four-sylinder four-cycle 1.5L MPI engine and the computer simulation is executed by 5th order Runge-Kutta method. The results of the simulation analysis and experimental studies show the dynamic behavior of clutch and a phenomenon of the neutral gear rattle with respect to drag torque and torsional characteristics of the clutch.

  • It is very important to minimize the weight of shaft from the viewpoint of economics and manufacture. For minimizing effectively the diameter of shaft in torsional shafting, authors developed computer program using the real-coded genetic algorithm which is one of optimizing techniques and based on real coding representation of genetic algorithm. In order to confirm the accuracy and effectiveness of the developed computer program, the computational results by the developed program were compared with those of conventional strength, stiffness and vibration designs for a generator shafting.

  • We herein propose a new design procedure of a flexible container ship model where the vertical bending and torsional vibration modes are similar to its prototype. To achieve similarity in torsional vibration mode shapes, the height of the shear center of the model must be located below the bottom hull, similar to an actual container ship with large opening decks. Therefore, we designed a ship model by imparting appropriate stiffness to the hull, using urethane foam without a backbone. We built a container ship model according to this design strategy and validated its dynamic elastic properties using a decay test. We measured wave-induced structural vibrations and present the results of tank experiments in regular and freak waves.

  • The present works are the theoretical results of the study to develope a damping flexible coupling which has a high performance of control for the torsional vibrations of power shafts in a large machinery. It is established the analysis scheme of the multiple-leaf spring, to obtain the static coefficient of stiffness of the coupling. Also, the dynamic coefficient of stiffness and the damping coefficient of the coupling are indentified through the flow analysis for a induced flow of working fluid by the deflection of multiple-leaf springs. This paper dealt with damping contributions by the friction between each plate of the multiple-leaf spring. In this paper, it is found that the dynamic characteristics of the damping flexible coupling are strongly dependent on the stiffness and the number of the multiple-leaf spring, and also vary with the viscosity of working fluid and the vibration speed of the inner star.
