  • The actual buckling of the railroad track structure is suspected to be a complex interaction between the vertical, lateral and torsional modes. To make the analysis tractable, however, most studies restrict themselves to either the vertical or the horizontal plane. Based on a comprehensive and realistic three-dimensional track model developed in the previous study, three dimensional buckling analysis of CWR track subjected to temperature load was performed. Using the study on buckling temperature and mode, sensitivity of track components such as tie spacing, ballast resistance, stiffness of pad-fastening system and rail size were investigated.

  • In this paper, the dynamic system modeling and the state sensitivity analysis of the spin-coater system for the reduction of the vibration are proposed. In the respect of modeling, the spin-coater system is composed of components of servomotor, belt, spindle, and a supported base. Each component is defined and combined modeling is derived to 3dimensional equations. Verification of modeling is verified by experimental values of actual system in the frequency domain. By direct differentiation the constraint equations with respect to kinematic design variables, such as eccentricity of spindle, moment of inertia, torsional stiffness and damping of supported base, sensitivity equations are derived to the verified state equations. Sensitivity of design variables could be used for vibration reduction and natural frequency shift in the frequency domain. Finally, dominant design variables ...

  • A new method is suggested for the retrofitting of torsionally sensitive buildings. The main objective is to eliminate the torsional component from the first two natural modes of the structure by properly modifying its stiffness distribution via selective strengthening of its vertical elements. Due to the multi-parameter nature of this problem, state-of-art optimization schemes together with an ad-hoc software implementation were used for quantifying the required stiffness increase, determine the required retrofitting scheme and finally design and analyze the required composite sections for structural rehabilitation. The performance of the suggested method and its positive impact on the earthquake response of such structures is demonstrated through benchmark examples and applications on actual torsionally sensitive buildings.

  • We have proposed and demonstrated a rotation angle sensor based on the stress -optic effect of a fused fiber coupler whose transmission spectrum is altered by the torsional stress. The peak of transmission spectrum was shifted to longer wavelength region with rotation of the coupler. The rotation angle sensor revealed reproducibility and symmetric behavior with respect to the rotation direction. The sensitivity of the sensor was 0.367 [nm/degee].

  • Viscoelastic instabilities are of fundamental importance to understanding the physics of complex fluids and of practical importance to materials processing and fluid characterization. Significant progress has been made over the past 15 years in understanding instabilities in viscoelastic flows with curved streamlines and is reviewed here. Taylor-Couette flow, torsional flow between a cone and plate, and torsional flow between parallel plates have received special attention due to both the basic significance of these flows and their critical role in rheometry. First, we review the criteria for determining when these flows become unstable due to elasticity in the absence of inertia, and discuss the generalization of these criteria to more complex flows with curved streamlines. Then, focusing on experiments and simulations in the Taylor-Couette problem, we review how thermal sensitivity (i.e., the dependence of fluid viscosity and elasticity on temperature) and inertia affect the stability of viscoelastic flows. Finally, we conclude with some general thoughts on unresolved issues and remaining challenges related to viscoelastic instabilities.

  • In this study, a methodology is developed and confirmed to find the physical contact between the slider and disc due to the defects of disk during head seeking operation using acoustic emission (AE) signal. The head/disk contact was detected during random and standard seeks, whereas no contact was detected during track fellowing. During standard and random seeks, the torsion mode of slider excitation was observed at 680KHz. Therefore, it is thought that AE technique can be used as an alternative method of the glide test by monitoring existence of the torsional mode of the slider during seek operation or can be used to detect the spacing loss during seeking operation. By appropriately choosing the location of the sensor an order of magnitude increase in the sensitivity for RMS AE signal is observed. Therefore we can find take-off velocity clearly with high signal to noise ratio of AE signal.

  • In this paper, we study the tracking performance of a torsion disk system where the plant is required to track a triangular-type command signal with a small steady state error and delay. We investigate the tracking performance of the traditional inner/outer loop approach and underline its limitations in high performance applications. We then design a more advanced controller using the mixed sensitivity robust control approach and show that the tracking performance of the system can be improved substantially. The success of the design, even for the case of lightly damped plants such as the one considered in this paper, is largely the result of the proper weights selection used in the mixed sensitivity design. The main contribution of this paper is, therefore, the development of design guidelines for the weights selection when accurate tracking of periodic reference signals are desired.

  • One of various main jobs in the design of a new tactical vehicle is to develop the lightest chassis parts satisfying the required durability target. In this study, the analytic methods to reduce the size and weight of a lower control arm and chassis frame of a Korean light tactical vehicle are presented. Topology optimization by ATOM (Abaqus Topology Optimization Module) is applied to find the optimal design of the suspension arm with volume and displacement constraints satisfied. In case of chassis frame, the light-weight optimization process associated with design sensitivity method is developed using Isight and ABAQUS. By these analytic methods we can provide design engineers with guides to where and how much the design changes should be made.

  • Hydraulic power steering system has been adopted in seniority passenger and commercial vehicle system for an easy maneuverability and a smoother ride. In this study, hydraulic power steering system analysis model which includes hydraulics and mechanical sub-systems was developed using commercial software, AMESim in order to predict characteristics for various steering components. Each component which constructs system was modeled and verified by experimentally obtained characteristics curves of each components. The parameter sensitivity analysis such as valve opening area, torsional stiffness of torsion bar for system design are carried out by the analysis and experimental method. The predicted results by the development model were a good agreement with experimentally obtained results. The sensitivity investigation results rotary torque when changing an input shaft edge width, was most sensitive, to change in angle and slot width and supply flow of input shaft edge is not a lot sensitively.
