Due to earthquakes, many structures suffered extensive damages that were attributed to the torsional effect caused by mass, stiffness or strength eccentricity. Due to this type of asymmetry torsional moments are generated that are imposed by means of additional shear forces developed at the vertical resisting structural elements of the buildings. Although the torsional effect on the response of reinforced concrete buildings was the subject of extensive research over the last decades, a quantitative index measuring the amplification of the shear forces developed at the vertical resisting elements due to lateral-torsional coupling valid for both elastic and elastoplastic response states is still missing. In this study a reliable index capable of assessing the torsional effect is proposed. The performance of the proposed index is evaluated and its correlation with structural response quantities like displacements, interstorey drift, base torque, shear forces and upper diaphragm's rotation is presented. Torsionally stiff, mass eccentric single-story and multistory structures, subjected to bidirectional excitation, are considered and nonlinear dynamic analyses are performed using natural records selected for three hazard levels. It was found that the proposed index provides reliable prediction of the magnitude of torsional effect for all test examples considered.
The evaluation of torsional effects on multistory buildings remains an open issue, despite considerable research efforts and numerous publications. In this study, a large number of multiple test structures are considered with normally distributed topological attributes, in order to quantify the statistically derived relationships between the torsional criteria and response parameters. The linear regression analysis results, depict that the center of twist and the ratio of torsion (ROT) index proved numerically to be the most reliable criteria for the prediction of the modal rotation and displacements, however the residuals distribution and R-squared derived for the ductility demands prediction, was not constant and low respectively. Thus, the assessment of the torsional parameters' contribution to the nonlinear structural response was investigated using artificial neural networks. Utilizing the connection weights approach, the Center of Strength, Torsional Stiffness and the Base Shear Torque curves were found to exhibit the highest impact numerically, while all the other torsional indices' contribution was investigated and quantified.

The input torque ripple induced by combustion engines is a significant source of NVH(noise, vibration and harshness) problem in automotive transmissions. Because this torque fluctuation is primarily transmitted to the input shaft of automotive powertrains(e.g., automatic transmissions) when the lock-up clutches are closed, a torsional damper with helical springs is generally inserted between engine and transmissions to isolate the input vibratory energy, which is essential for the passenger comfort. The torsional vibration isolator exhibits frequency ranges in which there is low vibration transmissibility. However, the isolation performance is currently evaluated through the static torsional spring characteristics. In this study, the transmissibility of torsional spring dampers, essential dynamic performance index for vibration isolator, is first experimentally evaluated.
Dynamical behaviors of one-dimensional (1D) nano-sized structures are of great importance in nanotechnology applications. Therefore, the torsional dynamic response of functionally graded nanorods which could be used to model the nano electromechanical systems or micro electromechanical systems with torsional motion about the center of twist is examined based on the theory of strain gradient nonlocal elasticity in this work. The mathematical background is constructed based on both strain gradient theory and Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory. The equation of motions and boundary conditions of radially functionally graded nanorods are derived using Hamilton's principle and then transformed into the eigenvalue analysis by using Fourier sine series. A general coefficient matrix is obtained to assemble the Stokes' transformation. The case of a restrained functionally graded nanorod embedded in two elastic springs against torsional rotation is then deeply investigated. The effect of changing the functionally graded index, the stiffness of elastic boundary conditions, the length scale parameter and nonlocal parameter are investigated in detail.
In the current work, static and free torsional vibration of functionally graded (FG) nanorods are investigated using Fourier sine series. The boundary conditions are described by the two elastic torsional springs at the ends. The distribution of functionally graded material is considered using a power-law rule. The systems of equations of the mechanical response of nanorods subjected to deformable boundary conditions are achieved by using the modified couple stress theory (MCST) and taking the effects of torsional springs into account. The idea of the study is to construct an eigen value problem involving the torsional spring parameters with small scale parameter and functionally graded index. This article investigates the size dependent free torsional vibration based on the MCST of functionally graded nano/micro rods with deformable boundary conditions using a Fourier sine series solution for the first time. The eigen value problem is constructed using the Stokes' transform to deformable boundary conditions and also the convergence and accuracy of the present methodology are discussed in various numerical examples. The small size coefficient influence on the free torsional vibration characteristics is studied from the point of different parameters for both deformable and rigid boundary conditions. It shows that the torsional vibrational response of functionally graded nanorods are effected by geometry, small size effects, boundary conditions and material composition. Furthermore, for all deformable boundary conditions in the event of nano-sized FG nanorods, the incrementing of the small size parameters leads to increas the torsional frequencies.

In the Korean Building Code (KBC), the Design Eccentricity involves the torsional amplification factor (TAF), and the inherent and accidental eccentricities. When a structure of less than 6-stories and assigned to seismic design category C or D is designed using equivalent static analysis method, both KBC-2006 and KBC-2009 use the TAF but apply different calculation methods for the of design eccentricity. The design eccentricity in KBC-2006 is calculated by multiplying the sum of inherent eccentricity and accidental eccentricity at each level by a TAF but that in KBC-2009 is calculated by multiplying only the accidental eccentricity by a TAF. In this paper, the damage indices of a building with planar structural irregularity designed by different design eccentricities are compared and the relationship between the earthquake damage and design eccentricity of the building is evaluated. On the basis of this study, the increment of design eccentricity results in the decrement of final eccentricity and global damage index of structure. It is observed that design eccentricity in KBC-2006 reduces the vulnerability of torsional irregular building compared to design eccentricity in KBC-2009.

Unlike the existing truss models for shear and torsion analysis, in this study, the torsional capacities of reinforced concrete (RC) members were estimated by introducing multi-potential capacity criteria that considered the aggregate interlock, concrete crushing, and spalling of concrete cover. The smeared truss model based on the fixed-angle theory was utilized to obtain the torsional behavior of reinforced concrete member, and the multi-potential capacity criteria were then applied to draw the capacity of the member. In addition, to avoid any iterative calculation in the existing torsional behavior model, a simple strength model was suggested that considers key variables, such as the effective thickness of torsional member, principal stress angle, and strain effect that reduces the resistance of concrete due to large longitudinal tensile strain. The proposed multi-potential capacity concept and the simple strength model were verified by comparing with test results collected from the literature. The study found that the multi-potential capacity could estimate in a rational manner not only the torsional strength but also the failure mode of RC members subjected to torsional moment, by reflecting the reinforcing index in both transverse and longitudinal directions, as well as the sectional and material properties of RC members.

A growing need has developed in the United States to obtain more specific knowledge on the structural integrity of infrastructure due to aging service lives, heavier and more frequent loading conditions, and durability issues. This need has spurred extensive research in the area of structural health monitoring over the past few decades. Several structural health monitoring techniques have been developed that are capable of locating damage in structures using modal strain energy of mode shapes. Typically in the past, bending strain energy has been used in these methods since it is a dominant vibrational mode in many structures and is easily measured. Additionally, there may be cases, such as pipes, shafts, or certain bridges, where structures exhibit significant torsional behavior as well. In this research, torsional strain energy is used to locate damage. The damage index method is used on two numerical models; a cantilevered steel pipe and a simply-supported steel plate girder bridge. Torsion damage indices are compared to bending damage indices to assess their effectiveness at locating damage. The torsion strain energy method is capable of accurately locating damage and providing additional valuable information to both of the structures' behaviors.

A new controller design method for an oscillatory servomotor system withlow torsional resonant frequencyis investigated to directly satisfyte given time domain specifications under the hardware constraints. A PIDM controller with optimized feedback gains using a new time weighted modelfollowing performance index is employed in this system. Necessaryconditions for optimality are derived and a design procedure for the desired moedel system considering the actualhardware limitations are also syggested. Using the proposed technique, the output responese of an oscillatory servomotor system can closely match to that of a desired model system by effectively suppressing the torsional resonant phenomenon. The usefulness of proposed design technique is clearly shown in the design examples.

It is reported that an intermittently rotating chamber system will improve the ratio of firepower to armament space in the case of mid-calibre automatic guns. However, the parallel index, which is a main component of the system, tends to be torsionally flexible due to the low lateral stiffness of cam followers on the index turret. This may cause the shaft system connecting the turret with the chamber prone to considerable residual torsional vibration so that serious misalignment problems occur during ammunition loading and firing processes. Herein, an electrorhelogical (ER) fluid actuator that can suppress such vibrations and the associated semiactive control algorithm are proposed. By mathematical modeling and computer simulations, the performance of the entire system is proved satisfactory.
