  • In order to plunder the Korean Peninsula in earnest, 'Modern Age Korea Topographical Map' of reduced 1:50,000 scale was manufactured within the period of 5 years from 1914 to 1918 through Japanese government-general of Joseson. This map includes all the data representing the life model of Korean Peninsula in the period of the End of Korean Empire, before the modern public construction works had started to seriously develop. This study analyzes the land use change after embedding the coordinates to the image of Modern Age Korea Topographical Map, which includes the scenery of 1910, and then overlaying it with the contemporary map in GIS environment. The results of presented research showed that before modern civil construction works started, the farmlands had lost their competitiveness because of difficult for development hilly areas and frequent floods, the river sites being abandoned and industrial structure change, and were developed into modern city area.

  • Ths study was carried out to understand the geo-topographical characteristics of the landslide area (1.5 ha) in Maeri, Sangdong-myeon, Gimhaesi, Gyeongsangnam-do. The bedrock of the landslide area was diollites and the area in and around the upper slope with the scattered talus was composed of Masanam originated from Igneous rocks. The landslide occurred in 19th of April, 2004 and the amount of rainfall for 3 days before the landslide was 74mm. The landslide by land creeping in this area was mainly attributed to geo-topographical characteristics such as well developed colluvial and/or weathered soils, and land cutting in lower slope, although the landslide could be affected by the rainfall. The type of the landslide can be classified into the land creeping by concave colluvial soils.

  • This research aimed at analyzing relationship between spatial distribution of Pinus densiflora, and topographical factors in Seorak and Chiak national park. 100 m grid size was proven to be suitable for analyzing spatial distribution characteristics of Pinus densiflora. Pinus densiflora appeared mainly on 400 m~800 m of elevation, $15^{\circ}{\sim}30^{\circ}$ of slope and 0~2 of TWI. There were no big differences in appearance frequency of Pinus densiflora area by aspect. There were differences in distribution characteristics of Pinus densiflora between below and above 400 m of elevation. There were no big differences in appearance frequency of Pinus densiflora area above 400 m of elevation but a big differences by topographical factors below 400 m of elevation.

  • The spatial distribution of precipitation trends according to urbanization, geographical and topographical conditions have been studied. In this study, precipitation data from 1973 to 2006 were analyzed for 56 climatological stations including the Seoul metropolis in South Korea. In addition to annual average daily precipitation, monthly average daily precipitation in April, July, October and January were analyzed, considering seasonal effect. The geographical and topographical characteristics of these sites were examined using GIS analysis. Land use status of the study area was also examined to estimate the extent of urbanization. The study results indicate that annual average precipitation increased, and monthly average precipitation in April and October decreased, while those in January and July increased. Considering urbanization effect, annual average precipitation and monthly average precipitation in July increased; however, monthly average precipitation in January, April and October decreased. Furthermore, compared with urbanization rate and proximity to coast, average elevation of study area appeared to be the most close correlation with annual and monthly averages of precipitation trends.

  • R&D productivity(P) and qualification(Q) for 16 regions in Korea were measured using all scientific output (articles) from several kinds of specific R&D program under the 3rd regional science and technology promotion policy(2008-2012). R&D capabilities of 16 regions were evaluated from Q-P position analysis and also compared between these regions for the purpose of examining their R&D capability status. Especially, R&D topographical map was created using the output of research and development over 5 years for investigating GyeongNam district's activities in science and technology and also analyzing co-relationship between basic research areas (or fields) and specialized strategic industrial sectors of GyeongNam district. As results of this study, 20 future-oriented research fields were suggested from this topographical map, which reflected internal R&D potentials and industrial infrastructure of GyeongNam district.

  • The distribution of tidal current and tidal induced residual current, topographical eddies and tidal residual circulation in the waters surrounding the Geumo Island-An Island channel were identified through numerical model experiments and vorticity balance analysis. Tidal current flows southwest at flood and northeast at ebb along the channel. The maximum flow velocity was about 100-150 cm/s in neap and spring tide. During the flood current in the neap tide, clockwise small eddies were formed in the waters west of Sobu Island and southwest of Daebu Island, and a more grown eddy was formed in the southern waters of Geumo Island in the spring tide. A small eddy that existed in the western waters of Chosam Island during the ebb in neap tide appeared to be a more grown topographical eddy in the northeastern waters of Chosam Island in spring tide. Tidal ellipses were generally reciprocating and were almost straight in the channel. These topographical eddies are made of vorticity caused by coastal friction when tidal flow passes through the channel. They gradually grow in size as they are transported and accumulated at the end of the channel. When the current becomes stronger, the topographic eddies move, settle, spread to the outer sea and grow as a counterclockwise or clockwise tidal residual circulation depending on the surrounding terrain. In the waters surrounding the channel, there were counterclockwise small tidal residual circulations in the central part of the channel, clockwise from the northeast end of the channel to northwest inner bay of An Island, and clockwise and counterclockwise between Daebu Island and An Island. The circulation flow rate was up to 20-30 cm/s. In the future, it is necessary to conduct an experimental study to understand the growth process of the tidal residual circulation in more detail due to the convergence and divergence of seawater around the channel.

  • Bridges are designed and constructed as infrastructures in order to overcome topographical obstructions for fast and smooth transfer of human/material resources. Therefore the shape and size of piers constructed along the longitudinal bridge axis should be restricted by topographical conditions. Action forces of connections and piers are affected by pier shapes and sizes together with connection arrangement which decides load carrying path under earthquakes. In this study a typical bridge is modelled with steel bearings and reinforced concrete piers and seismic analyses are performed with analysis models with different arrangement of steel bearings and piers. From analysis results ductile failure mechanisms for all analysis models are checked based on strength/action force ratios of steel bearings and pier columns. In this way the influences of arrangement of connections and piers on the earthquake resistant capacity of typical bridges are figured out in view of forming ductile failure mechanism.

  • Due to the topographical and climatic features of Korea, there is a strong possibility of a landslide. Recently, many landslides, caused by the improper land development, frequently occured at the mountain area every summer. Cheonan has been recognized to be relatively safe against landslide, but with the increased risk factors, systematic analysis of the landslide is required. In this paper, the topographical features of Mt. Seonggo in Cheonan City were extracted using contour maps, and water courses and basin areas in heavy rain were computed using the results. Conclusively, Mt. Seonggo areas were relatively safe in the view points of the length of water courses and rain-inflow, but in case of some narrow areas, sustainedly observation was required. Meanwhile, a contour map is proper to analyze the risk of landslide in the 1'st level in that it is more cost effective than other types of digital map.

  • Route design in topographical plane map brings many problems in efficiency and requires much time and labor by hand Recently, the active studies of efficient route design method using 3-D terrain information are being developed according to increasing concentration on GSIS. In order to analyze terrain information for route design efficiently, this study presents objective and overall datum by applying SQL in construction and analysis of database and the possibility of three-dimensional terrain information analysis, This study generates 3-D base map on topographical map of scale 1:5,000 and acquires terrain information that have various thematic map data; contour, land use, roadway, and drange. This is a study on the application of SQL in route design and construction of the terrain information that linked by graphic datum of completed topographical map and attributed datum of database. As the result of this study, we can produce promptly and efficiently design datum of profile annotation, cross section, and volume computations to the preliminary route for route design and apply this efficient method to route design by understanding visual DTM which is composed of the roadway and the natural scene after design.
