  • Since the release of mid-term domestic GHG goals until 2020, in 2009, some various GHG reduction policies have been proposed to reduce the emission rate about 30% compared to BAU scenario. There are two types of modeling approaches for identifying options required to meet greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement targets and assessing their economic impacts: top-down and bottom-up models. Examples of the bottom-up optimization models include MARKAL, MESSAGE, LEAP, and AIM, all of which are developed based on linear programming (LP) with a few differences in user interface and database utilization. The bottom-up model for electric sector requires demand management, regeneration energy mix, fuel conversation, etc., thus it has a very complex aspect to estimate some various policies. In this paper, we suggest a bottom-up BAU model for electric sector and how we can build it through step-by-step procedures such that includes load region, hydro-dam and pumping storage.

  • Many policies have been implemented to mitigate the greenhouse gases in atmosphere overall of sectors. With considering the distinct characteristics of the food security, agricultural sector is no exception to this situation. To this regard, total amount of carbon which is emitted through all of the agricultural production process is calculated, and being based on this result, the demand for the introduction of agricultural production system with low carbon has been rising. Case studies on the application of life cycle assessment (LCA) technique to agricultural sector are found in many countries. For example, life cycle inventory (LCI) data bases of crop, farm infrastructure, fertilizer, farm machinery, and etc., have been constructed and provided by Ecoinvent (Swiss centre for life cycle inventories) of Swiss. In Japan, Top-down typed LCA methodology for agriculture is developed based on the inter-industry analysis, and is evaluated according to the productive method of crop. On the other hand, environmental impact assessment of agricultural system using LCA in Korea is just in the beginning stages. So it is required to assess environmental impact on agricultural fertilizer and pesticide, and to develop their flow modeling, and methodology of LCA of agricultural sector. Environmental impact assessment on agricultural materials, machinery, and infrastructure will also be carried out.

  • The Household Income and Expenditure Survey is a representative survey of Statistics Korea, which aims to measure and analyze national income and consumption levels and their changes by understanding the current state of household balances. Recently, the disconnection problem in these time series caused by the large-scale reorganization of the survey methods in 2017 and 2019 has become an issue. In this study, we model the characteristics of the time series in the Household Income and Expenditure Survey up to 2016, and use the modeling to compute forecasts for linking the expenditures in 2017 and 2018. In order to evenly reflect the characteristics across all expenditure item series and to reduce the impact of a specific forecast model, we synthesize a total of 8 models such as regression models, time series models, and machine learning techniques. In particular, the noteworthy aspect of this study is that it improves the forecast by using the optimal combination technique that can exactly reflect the hierarchical structure of the Household Income and Expenditure Survey without loss of information as in the top-down or bottom-up methods. As a result of applying the proposed method to forecast expenditure series from 2017 to 2019, it contributed to the recovery of time series linkage and improved the forecast. In addition, it was confirmed that the hierarchical time series forecasts by the optimal combination method make linkage results closer to the actual survey series.

  • Systems Engineering(SE), as a special discipline evolved from multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary design knowledges and practical lessons learned from development practices, is required to develop today's ever-growing large complex systems. As computer speed and analytic sophistication accelerate their applications, modern society's needs have become increasingly varied and complex. Rapid advances in Systems Engineering and its education programs among the developed countries demonstrate their needs as an alternative to what is lacking from traditional disciplinary engineering to meet new challenges of our changing social environments. Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach that includes both management and technical processes. Its processes, methods, and tools are used to evolve, define, and verify an integrated, life-cycle balanced set of system solution that satisfy customer needs and requirements. The process methodology offers a top-down comprehensive, iterative and recursive problem solving process which includes the stating the problems, investigating the alternatives, architecting and modeling the system, integrating and operating the system, assessing and re-evaluating the system performances. The purpose of this paper is to research the cases of SE educational programs for both domestic and other developed countries and to propose recommendations for the domestic SE educational programs in the future.

  • Services are reusable units in business level. Ubiquitous computing provides computing services anytime and anywhere. The combination of both is becoming an important paradigm of computing environment. Fundamentals of services require flexibility and interoperability, and key elements of ubiquitous modeling require interoperability and context-awareness. There are two kinds of methods to identify services. The top-down approach is based on business process, and the bottom-up approach is based on components. The first approach depends on experts' intuitions, while the second approach suffers the incapability of expressing non-functional expression through components. Although a feature-based approach is capable of expressing non-functional expression and identifying services in ubiquitous environment, the research on this issue is not adequately addressed by far. To promote this research, this paper proposes a feature-based method to identify services in ubiquitous computing. The method extracts initial-candidate-services from a feature model. Then, the ultimate services are identified through optimizing and analyzing the candidate-services. The proposed method is expected to enhance the service reusability by effectively analyzing ubiquitous domain based on feature, and varying reusable service units.

  • As the requirements of a software system become large and complex, it causes some problems such that requirements specification using formal methods becomes larger in its size and less understandable. In order to solve such problems, the concepts of modularity and object are adopted to specify the requirements. In addition, top-down and compositional approach to handle such requirements are also adopted. In our paper, we suggest an object-oriented Petri net, called HOONet, to hierarchically specify and verify the complex requirements by incorporating the concepts of modularity, object, abstraction and refinement into a formal method. Our HOONet method supports the incremental specification and verification of partially described or not yet fully analyzed requirements. We also show the applicability of our method by modeling and verifying the requirements of a reactor safety control system.

  • This paper presents a new approach for detecting abnormal behaviors in complex surveillance scenes where anomalies are subtle and difficult to distinguish due to the intricate correlations among multiple objects' behaviors. Specifically, a cascaded probabilistic topic model was put forward for learning the spatial context of local behavior and the temporal context of global behavior in two different stages. In the first stage of topic modeling, unlike the existing approaches using either optical flows or complete trajectories, spatio-temporal correlations between the trajectory fragments in video clips were modeled by the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) topic model based on Markov random fields to obtain the spatial context of local behavior in each video clip. The local behavior topic categories were then obtained by exploiting the spectral clustering algorithm. Based on the construction of a dictionary through the process of local behavior topic clustering, the second phase of the LDA topic model learns the correlations of global behaviors and temporal context. In particular, an abnormal behavior recognition method was developed based on the learned spatio-temporal context of behaviors. The specific identification method adopts a top-down strategy and consists of two stages: anomaly recognition of video clip and anomalous behavior recognition within each video clip. Evaluation was performed using the validity of spatio-temporal context learning for local behavior topics and abnormal behavior recognition. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed approach in abnormal behavior recognition improved effectively and significantly in complex surveillance scenes.

  • Business process engineering (BPE) is a top-down management approach for increasing efficiency and productivity through radical and fundamental changes to the business processes of the organization. BPE requires firms to initially develop a model of the existing business processes of the firm to distinguish functional tasks from processes used for coordinating inputs, activities and outputs. The model is used for understanding the business processes in the organization and to simulate the effect of changes to the processes. The model can also be used to justify business processes, which involves assessing whether the business process provides value to the customer in its current configuration. Justification requires a careful examination of the key business processes used by the firm to identify systemic shortcomings in the process and to create a new business process to produce greater efficiency. BPE also considers automating as many business processes as possible to increase operational efficiency and the integration of business process tasks. The construction industry has been slow to adopt BPE because of its project approach in which a major firm contracts with various functional service providers and regards each project as unique. The industry focuses on functional task efficiency rather than business process efficiency. There is no formal methodology or criteria for determining whether a business process is effective for a construction firm in its current configuration. The use of performance measures such as costs, task duration times or other metrics can be useful in evaluating the effectiveness of an existing business process and for modeling the possible outcome of a fundamental and radical change to the process.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose applying agent-based model(ABM) for analyzing logistics system. Logistics problems become more complex and multi-faceted. As a result, the behavior of the system becomes more and more difficult to predict, we see the limitations of the traditional top-down approach in handling complexity. The ABM, that is the bottom-up approach, provides new modeling framework in system modeling. The ABM focuses on the interactions of subsystem or agents in whole system. Then the macroscopic picture of the whole system behavior is emerged as the microscopic interactions of agents are aggregated. The ABM assumes that each agent acts based on simple rules learned from dynamic interactions among other agents or its surrounding environment. The ABM has a great advantage in understanding emergent phenomenon that cannot be explained only through considering individual attributes. The ABM is an extremely useful method to analyze complex system such as logistics system. Therefore, the great research efforts and applications on the ABM to logistics system are encouraged in future.

  • Today, businesses have to respond with flexibility and speed to ever-changing customer demand and market opportunities. Service-oriented architecture (SOA) is the best methodology for minimizing the complexity and the cost of enterprise-level infrastructure and for maximizing the productivity and the flexibility of an enterprise. Most of the enterprise-level SOA delivery strategies deal with the top-down approach, which organization has to define the business processes, to model business services, and to find the required services or to develop new services. However, a lot of peoples want to maximally reuse legacy component-based systems as well as to deliver SOA into their organizations. In this paper, we propose a bottom-up approach for identifying business services with proper granularity. It can improve the reusability and maintenance of services by considering not data I/O of components of legacy applications but GUI event patterns. Our proposed method is applied to MIS with 129 GUIs and 13 components. As a result, the valiance of the coupling value of components is increased five times and three business services are distinctly exposed. It also provides a 49% improvement in reducing the relationship problems between services over a service identification method using only partitioning information of components.
