The experiment was carried out to make clear the root characters and relationships among some quantitative characters of soybeans. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Stem diameter was shown the greater growing in thickness after one month from sowing than the earlier stage, and the greater growing was shown in fertile bed soil than in sand soil. 2. The elongation of plant top in soybean plant was also shown the greater rate in bed soil than in sand soil 3. The length of plant root was longer than the length of plant top in the earlier stage of growing, and the length of root was much greater in sand soil than in fertile bed soil. 4. Weight of plant top was shown more in bed soil than in sand soil, but this tendency was shown more greater rate in the length of plant top than in weight of plant top. 5. Weight of root was more compared with weight of plant top in the earlier stage of growth, and also more greater rate was shown in sand soil than in fertile bed soil. 6. Highly significant correlations were shown among five quantitative characters, namely stem diameter, length of top, weight of top, length of root and weight of root, etc.
Comparisons of the physico-chemical properties of earthworm(Lumbricus terrestris) soil casts and top soil of red pine forests in a limestone area were carried out. The casts production durign August and September in 1990 amounted to 6∼7t/ha. The particle of top soil and casts ranged 40∼50% and 10∼20% for sand , 25∼30% and 30∼35% for silt, and 20∼25% and 55∼65% clay, respectively. Significant difference in pH value was not observed between casts and top soil. The casts had 1.4times of organic matter, 1.5times of N, 1.8times of available P, 2times of exchangeable K, 1.3times of exchangeable Ca, and 1.6times of exchangeable Mg than the top 10cm of soil did. Earthworms have altered the soil texture and increased nutrient availability through production of the soil casts in this limestone area.
A laboratory column experiment was conducted to learn the desalinization effect of rice straw, fresh or predecayed in limed marine soil, compared with gypsum. One third of Ca equivalent to indigenous Na plus Mg of the soil was applied to the top 10g out of 80g of total column soil, mixing one half of it to the top soil and the rest spreading on the surface. 1. Pre-decaying of rice straw in limed marine soil promoted the permeability of column soil. but showed a less effectiveness in desalinization of sodium than lime alone or lime plus fresh rice straw treatemenents. 2. Gypsum and calcium carbonate treatments without rice straw fixed Mg in the limed top soil and washed it down disolving more from the layer immediatly be low the treated top soil But the treatment of calcium carbonate and rice straw both together washed out Mg more from lower layers than the upper's, showing only physical desalinization. 3. The desalinization of Na was also severe in the layer immediately below the $CaSO_4$ treated top soil, leauing more Na ilo the top soil, which seemed to be attributed to the peptisation of the top soil and retard peptisation of desalinization when washed the soil applying not enough amount or non of gypsum.

To determine none top soil covering in rice seedling nursery method for the sparse machine transplanting, four different sowing methods were tested. Shoot and root length, fresh weight, leaf number and color using leaf color chart(LCC) and SPAD were collected as the data comparison of methods. The seedling height showed the highest growth according to the conventional (230g seed rate of pre-emerged seeds and top-soil covering) > high sowing density 1 (290g seed rate of pre-emerged seeds and top-soil covering) ≥ high sowing density 2(290g seed rate of pre-emerged seeds and none top-soil covering) > high sowing density 3(290g seed rate of iron-coated seeds and none top-soil covering). There was any statistical difference between groups in root length, leaf number, LCC, and SPAD values. Thus, a high sowing density of 290g for rice nursery seedling box was recommended to the sparse machine transplanting in rice cultivation with the none top-soil covering method, enabling convenient handling in transportation and machine transplanting work.
Soil properties of Quercus variabilis forest on Youngha valley at Mt. Worak National Park were studied as a part of Korea National Long-Term Ecological Research. Soil sampling was carried out along the 50 cm soil depth with 10cm intervals at every quarter from May 2005 through July 2006. Fresh soil was used for $NH_4{^+}-N,\;NO_3{^-}-N$, and soil water content determination. Remaining soils were air dried in the shade, and then used for determination of soil pH, T-N, T-P and exchangeable cation. Average soil organic matter in top soil was $8.5{\pm}1.2%$ and decreased with soil depth. Bulk density of top soil was $0.82{\pm}0.07g/cm^3 $and increased with soil depth. Soil organic matter and bulk density showed a negative linear correlation ($R^2=0.8464$). Soil pH in top soil and subsoil was similar. T-N, $NH_4{^+}-N,\;NO_3{^-}-N$ and T-P in top soil were $1.9{\pm}0.5mg/g,\;7.3{\pm}1.0mg/kg,\;2.0{\pm}0.4mg/kg\;and\;0.2{\pm}0.05mg/g$, respectively. $K^+,\;Ca^{2+}\;and\;Mg^{2+}$ in top soil were $84.6{\pm}24.4,\;408.8{\pm}137.8\;and\;93.4{\pm}23.0mg/kg$, respectively. They decreased with soil depth. Amounts of organic matter, T-N, $NH_4{^+}-N,\;NO_3{^-}-N$, T-P, $K^+,\;Ca^{2+}\;and\;Mg^{2+}$ in 50 cm soil depth were 250.9, 3.45, 0.025, 0.003, 0.639, 0.181, 0.845 and 0.302 ton $ha^{-1}\;50cm-depth^{-1}$, respectively.
The stiff top layer in a soil profile, which can happen in winter, may change the isolation effect of the wave barrier. The research scope of this paper is the investigation of the propagation of surface waves in layered soil with a stiff layer on its top, and the isolation effect of the solid stiff wave barrier. The investigations have been performed numerically by the Boundary-Element Method as a two-dimensional problem. A strip foundation vibrated harmonically in vertical direction was considered as the vibration source. Three soil profiles, a homogeneous half-space, two profiles with different thickness of stiff top layer, with two different types of wave barriers were investigated. The profiles with a stiff top layer show considerable reductions of the amplitude of the vibration in comparison to the homogeneous soil profile. The layered soil profiles with a stiff top layer do not show wave propagation velocities as high as they are expected from the material properties. Furthermore the vibration amplitudes in a frozen soil are much smaller with distance than in a non-frozen soil.
Floristic cmposition and soil properties were analyzed in chines cork oak(quercus variabilis)cmmunities in the limestone area, tanyang, ch'ungbuk province in korea. The tree layer was composed of quercus dentata, platycarya strobilacea, fraxinus rhynchophylla and others as wel as quercus variabilis. the shrub layer was dominated by ulmus davidiana for. suberosa, shrubby q. variabilis. euonymus alatus and rhus chinensis. among these, u. davidiana for. suberosa was known to have a restricted distribution to calcareous area, and 9 species in the shrub layer including e. alatus, indigofera kirilowii and rhamnus davurica belonged to the calcicole. The herb layer was dominated by carex lanceolata and spodiopogen cotulifer. ten specirs including g. lanceolata, clematis mandshurica, isachne globosa, lithospermum arvense and scabiosa mansenensis belonged to the calcicode. soil texture was classified to clay loam in both top and subsoil. Water cotent and organic matter were consistentl higher in top soil than in subsoil. soil ph rangd 7.8~8.4. Total n concentration in top soil ranged from 0.2 to 0.4mg/g, which was higher than that in subsoil. Available p and exchangeable k concentretion were also significantly higher in op soil than in subsoil. However, exchangeable ca concentration was similar betweenthe top and the subsoil. Unlike the other nutrients, exchangeable mg concentration in top soil was lower than that in subsoil. orangic matter, n, p and k content in this chinese cork oak stand showed as much as the other noncalcareous sites. Soil properties in this study area seemed to have been influenced by casts forming activities of earthworms.

This study was carried out to investigate the leaching characteristics by the landfill of solidified sludge. pH of leachate was 3.7 - 5.8 and 8.0 - 10.4 in each column using sand as a top-soil layer on filled municipal waste and solidified cake. $NH_3$-N in leachate was increasing in the each column using sand as a top-soil layer on filled dewatered sludge and solidified cake, but decreasing in the each column using sand and solidified cake by top-soil layer on filled municipal waste. Also the concentration of $NO_3$-N was on the way of stabilizing but was difficult to find any tendency until now. Zn and Mn in leachates were the highest in the column filled with the solidified sludge, Cr, Pb and Cd were low concentration at each column.
Serious problems in reclaimed land agriculture are high soil salinity and poor vertical drainage, so desalinization in these soils is very difficult. Also, although desalinization is accomplished in reclaimed top soils, before long, soils are resalinized according to capillary rise of salts from the subsurface soils. To resolve these problems, multi-layered soil columns with subsurface layer of macroporous medium utilizing coal bottom ash (CBA) were constructed and the effects of blocked resalinization of these soils were investigated. In this experiment soil samples were collected from Munpo series (coarse-loamy, nonacid, mixed, mesic, typic Fluvaquents). The soil texture was silt loam and the EC was $33.9dS\;m^{-1}$. As for groundwater seawater was used and groundwater level of 1 cm from the bottom was maintained. The overall rate of capillary rise was $2.38cm\;hr^{-1}$ in soil 60 cm column, $0.25cm\;hr^{-1}$ in topsoil (30 cm) + CBA (5 cm) + subsurface soil (10 cm) column and $0.08cm\;hr^{-1}$ in topsoil (30 cm) + CBA (10 cm) + subsurface soil (10 cm) column. In multi-layered soil columns with CBA 20, 30 cm layer, wetting front due to capillary rise could not be seen in top soil layer. After 70 days capillary rise experiment water soluble Na+ accumulated in top soil of soil columns with CBA 20, 30 cm was diminished by 92.8, 96.5% respectively in comparison with Na+ accumulated in top soil of soil 60 cm column because CBA layer cut off capillary rise of salts from the subsurface soil. From these results we could conclude that the macroporous layer utilizing CBA placed at subsurface layer cut off capillary rise of solutes from subsurface soil, resulting in lowered level of salinity in top soil and this method can be more effective in newly reclaimed saline soil.

No-tillage is an effective practice to save labor input and reduce methane emission from the paddy. Effects of tillage and cultivation methods on carbon accumulation and soil properties were investigated in the treatments of tillage-transplanting (T-T), tillage-wet hill seeding (T-WS), minimum tillage-dry seeding (MT-S) and no-tillage dry seeding (NT-S) of rice. Soil carbon was higher in NT-S and MT-S, compared to T-T and T-WS. In NT-S and MT-S, soil carbon contents were the highest in the top soil (5 cm depth) and decreased with soil depth. In T-T and T-WS, however soil carbon contents showed no significant difference up to soil depth of 15 cm from the top. Carbon content was the highest in the soil particle size under $106{\mu}m$ and decreased as the soil particle size increased. Contents of water-stable aggregates in NT-S and MT-S were higher than those of T-T and T-WS. In NT-S and MT-S, contents of water-stable aggregates were the highest in the top soil and significantly decreased with soil depth while no significant difference up to the soil depth of 15 cm in T-T and T-WS. Available $SiO_2$ contents in the top soil were the highest in NT-S and MT-S while the lowest in T-T and T-WS. It is concluded that minimum or no disturbance of soil in rice cultivation can increase carbon accumulation in the soil, especially in the top layer, and subsequently contribute to the formation of the water-stable soil aggregates.
