  • The magnetic fluid polishing technique can polish the tool of complex shape, because the polishing method which polishes as compress the workpiece by the magnetism abrasives to arrange to the linear according to the line of magnetic force. Therefore, we producted the magnetic fluid polishing device in order that mirror like finishing processes the tool surface. In order to a polishing condition selection, polishing characteristic was estimated by polishing conditions which are magnetic flux density, polishing speed, grain size, magnetic fluid. The tool was polished to the selected polishing condition. The result to evaluate the polished tool's performance with the cutting force and tool wear, the polished tool's performance was improved compared with the tool not to polish.

  • The purpose of this investigation is experimentally to clarify the machinability and optimum tool geometry on milling of hardened STD11 steel. In the finish process office milling of high hardened STD11 steel by CBN tool, the optimum tool shape is suggested, which can minimize the tool fracture and chipping by impact. It is measured that cutting farce, tool wear and surface roughness generated during single-insert face milling using various geometric CBN tools. It has been found that the optimal chamfer angle of CBN tool is about -$25^{\circ}C$ and the suitable chandler width is 0.2mm. The nose radius of tool is the most excellent at 1.2mm in the viewpoint of tool wear and surface roughness.

  • This paper discusses the methods of computing tool-paths for machining free-form surfaces on 3-axis CNC machines in die and mould making. In computational view this paper describes the characteristics and issues of the geometric information and the shape, which make computing tool-paths difficult. Important points that should be considered in devising a computing method are also discussed. A newly implemented method is explained and compared with an old method for a commercial CAM system. The implemented method is used in a commercial CAM system and the computing time for an example is presented.

  • In a multi-action tooling system, which is usually used for the powder compaction process to fabricate the complex multilevel parts, crack formation is crucially detrimental and should be avoided. Among various process factors, tool shape is an important factor to prevent the crack formation during powder compaction process. In this work, the effects of different tool shapes were investigated through the experimental oberservation of pore distribution in real products and the finite element analysis of residual stresses. The results were interpreted based on non-uniform powder density in the compacted parts.

  • In the present investigation, the improvement of processing efficiency in the high speed machining of GC250 is explored. This study is to evaluate the tool performance in difficult-to-material using the new developed tool. Tool performance evaluation are conducted by tool wear, surface roughness, chattering in machined surface. The tool wear of A type was smaller than B type. In type B tool the chatter mark was observed in machined surface. The good surface roughness was obtained in type A tool. Consequently, the tool performance of A type is better than B type.

  • The finite element method is applied to analyze the mechanism of metal cutting, especially micro metal cutting. This paper introduces some effects, such as constitutive deformation laws of workpiece material, friction of tool-chip contact interfaces, tool rake angle and also simulate the cutting process, chip formation and geometry, tool-chip contact, reaction force of tool. Under the usual plane strain assumption, quasi-static analysis were performed with variation of tool-chip interface friction coefficients and tool rake angles. In this analysis, cutting speed, cutting depth set to 8m/sec, 0.02mm, respectively. Some cutting parameters are affected to cutting force, plastic deformation of chip, shear plane angle, chip thickness and tool-chip contact length and reaction forces on tool. Several aspects of the metal cutting process predicted by the finite element analysis provide information about tool shape design and optimal cutting conditions.

  • The optical film for light luminance improvement of BLU that is used in LCD/LED and retro-reflective film is used as luminous sign consist of square and triangular pyramid structure pattern based on V-shape micro prism pattern. In this study, we analyzed machining characteristics of Cu-plated flat mold by shaping with diamond tool. First, cutting conditions were optimizing as V-groove machining for the experiment of micro prism structure mold machining with prism pattern shape, cutting force and roughness. Second, the micro prism structure such as square and triangular pyramid pattern were machined by cross machining method with optimizing cutting conditions. Burr and chip shape were discussed with material properties and machining method.

  • Of all the rapid tooling (RT) methods currently available, thick-layer laminated tooling is the most suitable for large-scale, low-cost dies and molds. Currently, the determination of a lamina's contour or profile and the associated slicing algorithms are based on existing rapid prototyping (RP) data manipulation technology. This paper presents a new adaptive slicing algorithm developed exclusively for profiled edge laminae (PEL) tooling PEL tooling is a thick-layer RT technique that involves the assembly of an array of laminae, whose top edges are simultaneously profiled and beveled using a line-of-sight cutting method based on a CAD model of the intended tool surface. The cutting profiles are based on the intersection curve obtained directly from the CAD model to ensure geometrical accuracy. The slicing algorithm determines the lamina thicknesses that minimize the dimensional error using a new tool shape error index. At the same time, the algorithm considers the available lamination thicknesses and desired lamina interface locations. We demonstrate the new slicing algorithm by developing a simple industrial PEL tool based on a CAD part shape.

  • The sensitivity method has been applied to find perform shape that results in the desired shape after foring. As a 2D example, initial shape of specimen for the cylinder shape without barrelling after forging has been found. The method is then applied to various shapes of 3D free forging and initial shapes of the corresponding specimens after forging have been found successfully The sensitivity method is proven to be an effective and accurate tool for the preform design.

  • This paper presents the effects of the tool shape on the geometrical characteristics of flat end-milled side walls. A tool shape is characterized by such parameters as helix angle, number of cutting edges, and diameter. The geometrical characteristics of the side walls are represented by the surface profiles in the feed and axial directions, which are orthogonal to each other. The geometrical defects in each direction are estimated based on the instantaneous apparent cutting areas, which are represented by the interference area between the tool and workpiece and that between the cutting edge and workpiece. It is confirmed that a geometrical defect in the feed direction is formed when the tool leaves the workpiece and the curvature of the tool path changes. Defects in the axial direction are also found in the side walls, except for the defect zone in the feed direction. An up-cut using an end-mill with a steeper helix angle, a greater number of cutting edges, and a smaller diameter are thus found to improve the geometrical accuracy of end-milled side walls.
