The increasing demand in industry to produce rectangular cans at the reduction by the rectangular backward extrusion process involves better understanding of this process. In 2-D die deflection and dimensional variation of the component during extrusion, punch retraction, component injection and cooling was conducted using a coupled thermal-mechanical approach for the forward extrusion of aluminum alloy and low-carbon steel in tools of steel. Backward extrusion FE simulation and experimental simulation by physical modeling using wax as a model material have been performed. These simulations gave good results concerning the prediction of th flow modes and the corresponding surface expansions of the material occuring at the contact surface between the can and the punch. There prediction are the limits of the can height, depending on the reduction, the punch geometry, the workpiece material and the friction factor, in order to avoid the risk of damage caused by sticking of the workpiece material to the punch face. The influence of these different parameter on the distribution of the surface expansion along the inner can wall and bottom is already determined. This paper deals with the influence of the geometry changes of the forming tool and the work material in the rectangular backward using the 3-D finite element method.
The substance of the use of the derived non-linear creep constitutive equations under variable stress levels (see first part of the paper, Kmet 2004) is explained and the strategy of their application is outlined using the results of one-step creep tests of the steel spiral strand rope as an example. In order to investigate the creep strain increments of cables an experimental set-up was originally designed and a series of tests were carried out. Attention is turned to the individual main steps in the production and application procedure, i.e., to the one-step creep tests, definition of loading history, determination of the kernel functions, selection and definition of constitutive equation and to the comparison of the resulting values considering the product and the additive forms of the approximation of the kernel functions. To this purpose, the parametrical study is performed and the results are presented. The constitutive equations of non-linear creep of cable under variable stress history offer a strong tool for the real simulation of stochastic variable load history and prediction of realistic time-dependent response (current deflection and stress configuration) of structures with cable elements. By means of suitable stress combination and its gradual repeating various loads and times effects can be modelled.
A new three-node triangular shell element based on higher order zig-zag theory is developed for laminated composite shells with multiple delaminations. The present higher order zig-zag shell theory is described in a general curvilinear coordinate system and in general tensor notation. All the complicated curvatures of surface including twisting curvatures can be described in an exact manner in the present shell element because this element is based on geometrically exact surface representation. The displacement field of the proposed finite element includes slope of deflection, which requires continuity between element interfaces. Thus the nonconforming shape function of Specht's three-node triangular plate bending element is employed to interpolate out-of-plane displacement. The present element passes the bending and twisting patch tests in flat surface configurations. The developed element is evaluated through the eigenvalue problems of composite cylindrical shells with multiple delaminations. Through the numerical examples it is demonstrated that the proposed shell element is efficient because it has minimal degrees of freedom per node. The present shell element should serve as a powerful tool in the prediction of natural frequency and modes of multi-layered thick laminated shell structures with arbitrary-shaped multiple delaminations.
Intricate deflection requires many conventional actuators (motors, pistons etc.), which can be financially and spatially wasteful. Novel smart soft composite (SSC) actuators have been suggested, but fabrication complexity restricts their widespread use as general-purpose actuators. In this study, a hybrid manufacturing process comprising 3-D printing and casting was developed for automated fabrication of SSC actuators with $200{\mu}m$ precision, using a 3-D printer (3DISON, ROKIT), a simple polymer mixer, and a compressor controller. A method to improve precision is suggested, and the design compensates for deposition and backlash errors (maximum, $170{\mu}m$). A suitable flow rate and tool path are suggested for the polymer casting process. The equipment and process costs proposed here are lower than those of existing 3D printers for a multi-material deposition system and the technique has $200{\mu}m$ precision, which is suitable for fabrication of SSC actuators.
In this paper, a multi-step optimization using a G.A.(Genetic Algorithm) with variable penalty function is introduced to the structural design optimization of a high speed machining center. The design problem, in this case, is to find out the best cross-section shapes and dimensions of structural members which minimize the static compliance, the dynamic compliance, and the weight of the machine structure simultaneously. The first step is the cross-section shape optimization, in which only the section members are selected to survive whose cross-section area have above a critical value. The second step is a static design optimization, in which the static compliance and the weight of the machine structure are minimized under some dimensional constraints and deflection limits. The third step is a dynamic design optimization, where the dynamic compliance and the structure weight are minimized under the same constraints as those of the second step. The proposed design optimization method was successful applied to the machining center structural design optimization. As a result, static and dynamic compliances were reduced to 16% and 53% respectively from the initial design, while the weight of the structure are also reduced slightly.
In machine tools, often a gearbox is installed to control the rotating speed of spindle, which sometimes generates problems of noise and vibration due to errors in tooth-meshing. In this study, the characteristics of, noise and vibration of given gearbox for a machine tool are analyzed experimentally. From the measurement, it was observed that the tooth-meshing component of the sound pressure level from the gearbox took its maximum at a specific operational speed. Therefore, the main content of this study is to investigate the reason why the above mentioned characteristics are observed. By investigating the natural frequencies of the components in gearbox, it was found that the natural frequencies of the rotating gear-shaft and gearbox for twisting mode were closely related to the first and second peak of sound pressure levels respectively. Thereform, in this study, those relations were identified by the impact test of rotating gear-shaft and-gearbox. In addition, we inserted the rubber between housing and bed, and analyze the effect of the rubber insertion on noise reduction by Operational Deflection Shapes.
The scale effects on the permanent deformations and fractures of structures subjected to impact loadings have been aware by structural engineers for a long time. Experimental investigations have been performed with various structures to demonstrate the effects, but very few are directly related with marine structural elements. Furthermore, the causes of the scale effects have not clearly been answered yet. In this study, to quantify the scale effects on the permanent deflections, lateral collision tests were performed on steel unstiffened plates and the numerical analyses of the tested models were also conducted using a commercial package, Abaqus. After the substantiation of the numerical tool using the test results, a parametric study was carried out considering and neglecting the strain-rate hardening. Based upon the parametric study results, it may be concluded that the main cause of the scale effects on the permanent deflections of steel unstiffened plates subjected to lateral collision loads is the strain-rate effects.
In an automotive body structure, a design configuration that fulfills structural requirements such as deflection, stiffness and strength is necessary for structural design and is composed of various components. The integrated design is used to obtain a minimum weight structure with optimal or feasible performance based on conflicting constraints and boundaries. The mechanical design must begin with the definition of one or more concepts for structure and specification requirements in a given application environment. Structural optimization is then introduced as an integral part of the product design and used to yield a superior design to the conventional linear one. Although finite element analysis has been firmly established and extensively used in the past, geometric and material nonlinear analyses have also received considerable attention over the past decades. Also, nonlinear analysis may be useful in the area of structural designs where instability phenomena can include critical design criteria such as plastic strain and residual deformation. This proposed approach can be used for complicated structural analysis for an integrated design process with the nonlinear feasible local flexibilities between system and subsystems.
One of the possible alternatives of simulation-based time-dependent reliability assessment of pre-stressed biconcave and biconvex cable trusses, the Monte Carlo method, is applied in this paper. The influence of an excessive deflection of cable truss (caused by creep of cables and rheologic changes) on its time-dependent serviceability is investigated. Attention is given to the definition of the basic random variables and their statistical functions (basic, mutually dependent random variables such as the pre-stressing forces of the bottom and top cable, structural geometry, the Young's modulus of elasticity of the cables, and the independent variables, such as permanent load, wind, snow and thermal actions). Then, the determination of the response of the cable truss to the loading effects, and the definition of the limiting values considering serviceability of the structure are performed. The potential of the method, using direct Monte Carlo technique for simulation-based time-dependent reliability assessment as a powerful tool, is emphasized. Results obtained by the First order reliability method (FORM) are compared with those obtained by the Monte Carlo simulation technique.
This study focused on evaluating the reliability of code formulas such as those of the current Korean Building Code(KBC 1988). UBC 1997, NBCC 1995. and BSLJ 1994 for estimating the fundamental period of RC apartment buildings with shear-wall dominant systems, representative of typical residential buildings in Korea. For this purpose, full-scale measurements were carried out on fifty RC apartment buildings, and these results were compared to those obtained by code formulas and also by dynamic analysis. Although these code formulas are based on the measured periods of buildings during various earthquakes and building period varies with the amplitude of structural deflection or strain level, ambient surveys should provide an effective tool for experimentally verifying the design period to the completed building. This comparison shows that comparatively large errors are likely to occure when the code formula of KBC 1988 is used, and all the other code formulas are not sufficient to estimate the fundamental period of apartment buildings with shear-wall dominant systems. An improved formula is proposed by regression analysis on the basis of the measured period data. The proposal is for the servicebility stress level, but it can also be applied for seismic code in the regions of low seismicity similar to Korea.
