  • In this paper, we present fusion methods for two different lofargrams. Since the conventional method synthesizes the lofargrams using frequency spectrum, it has limited performance in fusion of tonal signals which have two-dimensional information of the time-frequency domain. Proposed algorithm uses a two-dimensional directional bilateral filter for preprocessing and fuses two lofargrams based on comparison of local anisotropy of the lofargrams. After noise is suppressed and tonals are sharpened, the local anisotropy can be used as a criterion to divide tonals and noise. The experiment results using simulated data and real data showed that the proposed algorithms result in similar or lower noise level of the fused lofargram than conventional algorithms and decrease tonal omission in fusion process.

  • This paper proposes a method to improve the performance of ship identification through lofargram analysis of ship noise by applying the Hough Transform to a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model. When processing the signals received by a passive sonar, the time-frequency domain representation known as lofargram is generated. The machinery noise radiated by ships appears as tonal signals on the lofargram, and the class of the ship can be specified by analyzing it. However, analyzing lofargram is a specialized and time-consuming task performed by well-trained analysts. Additionally, the analysis for target identification is very challenging because the lofargram also displays various background noises due to the characteristics of the underwater environment. To address this issue, the Hough Transform is applied to the lofargram to add lines, thereby emphasizing the tonal signals. As a result of identification using CNN models on both the original lofargrams and the lofargrams with Hough transform, it is shown that the application of the Hough transform improves lofargram identification performance, as indicated by increased accuracy and macro F1 scores for three different CNN models.

  • This paper deals with the correlation between the interior noise and the floor vibration of the train from rolling, impulse and friction in Busan Metro line 3. The correlation is verified by sound and vibration measurement causing friction between the railway and the wheel. If ANC(Active Noise Control) system can reduce 5 dB in below 500 Hz, the sound pressure level of the whole band pass can be reduced about 1.8-4.8 dB in squeal noise. Curve squeal noise is the intense high frequency tonal that can occur when a railway vehicle transverses a curve. The frequency range is from around 500 to almost 20,000 Hz, with noise levels up to about 15 dB in curve.

  • Noise performance of small wind turbines is critical since these are generally installed near the community. In this study, flow noise characteristics of Savonius wind turbines are numerically investigated. Flow field around the turbine are computed by solving unsteady RANS equation using CFD techniques and the radiated noise are predicted by applying acoustic analogy to the computed flow data. Parametric study is then carried out to investigate the effects of operating conditions and geometric design factors of the Savonius wind turbine. Tonal noise components with higher harmonic frequency than the BPF are identified in the predicted noise spectra from a Savonius wind turbine. The end-plates and helical blades are shown to reduce overall noise levels. These results can be used to design low-noise Savonius wind turbines.

  • The aim of this paper is to find an adequate method to study declination in Korean. In previous studies of declination in Korean, maximum and minimum pitch values in an accentual phrase were measured. But this method is inadequate when an accentual phrase is located at the intonational phrase. So in order to exclude the final tone of an intonational phrase, we propose to measure pitch values of the first and second tone in an accentual phrase when the tonal pattern of the accentual phrase is 'LHLH'. In this case, the line that connects every first tone of an accentual phrase is the baseline, and the line that connects every second tone of an accentual phrase is the topline. By a comparison of declination between focused and neutral utterances, we will show that the topline of declination is more direct to the speaker's plan than the baseline.

  • Over the range(OTR) has been applied for cooking and ventilation functions especially in northern Amarica. Because flow rate and operating rpm of the double sided sirocco fan for ventilation are much higher and than the microwave oven system, the major noise source is the sirocco fm. Recently, the quiet fan development is one of very important issues for amenity. In this study, the noise source identification using multi-microphone array system was carefully carried out and numerical simulations for understanding the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic of the fan were peformed. The sound level of tonal noise is predicted with a good accuracy but that of the broadband shows some discrepancy. In order to reduce the broadband noise, the inlet region of sirocco fan have to be modified that the secondary flow should be suppressed. Based on these results, new low noise fan and OTR is now developing.

  • A computational aero-acoustic (CAA) method is used to predict the tonal noise generated from a cavity of automobile door seals or gaps at low flow Mach numbers (A$\_$$\infty$/=0.077 and 0.147) In the present method, the acoustically perturbed Euler equations are solved with the acoustic source term obtained from the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes calculations of the cavity flow in self-sustained oscillations. The aerodynamic and acoustic fields are computed for the Reynolds numbers based on the displacement thickness, Re$\_$$\delta$*/=850 and 1620 and their fundamental mode characteristics are investigated. The present method is also verified with the experimentally measured sound pressure level (SPL) spectra.

  • In this paper is presented passive-active noise control in a duct using a ring-type smart foam. The ring-type smart foam is comprised of a PVDF film embedded in elastic noise control foam of lining shape. The embeddedPVDF element acts as an actuator to reduce noise at lower frequencies and the foam absorbs noise at higher frequencies. By implementing an adaptive filtered-x LMS algorithm, experiments are performed to reduce both tonal and broadband noise in a duct with one end closed and the other end open.

  • Automobile sunroof buffeting is the tonal noise of low frequency around 20Hz. It occurs due to the acoustic feedback process between the shear layer detached from the leading edge of sunroof opening and the Helmholtz resonator-like property of a car cabin. In this paper, PIV visualization technique is applied to the unsteady flow field around sunroof opening of an SUV in the full-scale automotive wind tunnel in order to find out buffeting mechanism. A phase-marking PIV measurement method, in which image and sound pressure are recorded simultaneously, and a phase-rearrangement post-processing program were developed for capturing noise-related velocity fields without expensive synchronization systems. Through this study, some characteristics of the real-car sunroof shear layers under various deflector conditions were identified and these results can provide insights into the noise reduction mechanism of the tube-type deflector.

  • Consumer's product selection measures are being shifted from the units' operational performance to overall performance. Low noise, low vibration, and low power consumption rate, etc. which used to be additional quality indices, now become vital performance factors. Especially, noise and vibration characteristics are being considered as equivalent to/or even more critical than operational performance in certain products such as office machines and home entertainment systems, which share the same space with human being's daily life. Therefore, noise reduction and sound quality improvement technology becomes an inevitable design issue for those applications. Qualitative noise characteristics of rotating polygonal disk applied to digital printer systems are presented. Overall sound pressure level change and tonal noise variation with respect to the geometrical properties of polygonal disk, operational speed, and others are briefly discussed based on experimental results.
