This study was conducted to investigate the effects on the over-growth inhibition of fruit vegetables (tomato, cucumber, and hot pepper) seedling by the treatment of triazole-typechemicals and to select the most effective chemicals for the over-growth inhibition, and to investigate suitabla concentration treatment and times of the newly selected chemical. The triazole-type chemicals inhibited stem height more, the more the concentration is increased in any crops. The diniconazole showed the highest dwarfing ration, and the tebuconazole and hexaconazole are also good for dwarfing ratio. The diniconazole decreased the plant height of cucumber, tomato, and hot pepper as the concentration is increased. In cucumber, thc dwarfing ratio was 30% in the 5 mg${\cdot}L^{-1}$ treatment, and was 60% in thc l00 mg${\cdot}L^{-1}$ treatment. In tomato and hot pepper, the dwarfing ratio was 30% in the 25 mg${\cdot}L^{-1}$ treatment in any times. In diniconazole treatment, the cucumber and tomato should have 5 mg${\cdot}L^{-1}$ at the lst growth stage and the hot pepper should have 5 mg${\cdot}L^{-1}$ at the 2nd growth stage to obtain good seedlings.
The $F_1$ hybrid Red Coat is one of the most highly sought after cultivars of tomato in Australia and yields up to 7.5 $\cal{kg/plant}$. An experiment was conducted to de-termine the optimal strength and type of growth medium and sucrose concentration for shoot organogenesis of the Red Coat cultivar using cotyledonary explants. Two basal growth media, viz. MS and Gamborg' s $B_5$ at 0, 1/4, 1/2, full or double strength along with sucrose concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1.5, 3 or $5\%$, were evaluated using 25 replications. The main effects of treatment and their mutual interactions were evaluated for the proportion of explants that produced callus and/or shoots, number of shoots produced per explant, callus diameter and shoot height. The explants failed to produce shoots in the absence of mineral nutrient. Only a small proportion of the explants ($6\%$ with $B_5\;and\;3\%$ with MS) regenerated shoots in the absence of sucrose. Lower sucrose concentrations ($0.5-1.5\%$) along with full strength media were optimal for most of the traits studied. The $B_5$ medium outperformed MS medium for shoot organogenesis. For all the traits examined, significant differences in main effects (P < 0.05) and two-way interactions were detected, but no three-way interactions (medium type $\times$ medium concentration $\times$ sucrose concentration) were observed. Sucrose was found essential for the development of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll content increased with an increase in sucrose concentration up to $3\%$ and decreased at $5\%$ sucrose.

This study was carried out in order to determin optimum irrigation requirements and water management practices for normal growth of dry field crops in reclaimed tidelands, and apply m planning of the irrigation projects. Desalinization experiments were performed by water management practices in the experimental field with high salt concentration, and growth experiments were conducted by irrigation point treatments using tomato and beet with relatively high salt tolerance. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows : 1. Leaching or rinsing-leaching method was found to be effective in desalinizing the reclaimed tideland with rather high permeability. In this case, the water requirement for desalinizing the root zone layer of 40cm in depth, was estimated to be 1,200mm in depth. 2.The gypsum treatment in the desalinization of reclaimed tidelands, was ineffective in water requirements ; however, it could produce the desired effect in the facility of desalinization and the shortening of desalinization period with the sustaining permeability, in case of the desalinization by leaching method. 3.The optimum irrigation point which maintains the salt concentration within salt tolerance and maximizes the crop yield in reclaimed tidelands of silt loam soil, was found to be pF 1.6 in tomato and pF 1.8 in beet. The interval of irrigation date within 2 days was proved to he effective in both cases. 4.The optimum irrigation requirement and the water reguirement for the prevention of salt rise during the growing period after transplanting, were estimated to be 602mm(6.7mm/day) and 232mm for tomato, respectively. 5.The optimum irrigation requirement and the water requirement for the prevention of salt rise during the growing period after transplanting, were estimated to be 261mm(3.7mm/day) and 66mm for beet, respectively.
To test a potential salt tolerance in phosphorus (P) efficient plants (T9 and T8), tomato seedlings were hydroponically grown in saline media. The tolerance was evaluated by comparing growth and metabolism against T5, non-P-efficient variety, at different salt concentrations: 0, 1, 5, 10 g/L. Fresh weights (FW) were measured weekly. Dry weight (DW), mineral contents, and stomatal resistance (Rs) were measured at the termination of experiment. At the lower two salt concentrations (0, 1 g/L), no significant difference was observed in terms of FW, DW, and Rs. At 5, 10 g/L of salt concentration, however, significant variation is evident: T9 and T8 outperformed T5. On the other hand, no difference was also in N, P, K, and Na contents at the corresponding salt concentration. These observations together indicate that P-efficient strain can better tolerate to salinity.

This study was performed to examine the high temperature adaptability with CO2 treatment for tomato under the condition of greenhouse cultivation during summer season. The indoor condition of CO2 concentrations were controlled as control, 500 ppm, and 1,000 ppm for the greenhouse with the maximum air temperature of 44℃. With the observation of VPD (vapor pressure deficit) and CWSI (crop water stress index) by leaf-air temperature difference according to CO2 treatment concentration, the plants with the CO2 concentration of 1,000 ppm performed less water stress than those with the CO2 concentrations of control and 500 ppm. The plants without CO2 treatment performed the severest degree of water stress.
The purpose of this study was to determine which fermented liquid fertilizer and application method yields the greatest amount of growth in red pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum MILL.) plants. Additionally, we investigated which extraction methods produce the most effective fertilizer with the highest levels of mineral nutrients. The liquid fertilizers used in this study were made from fish, bone and fish meal, red pepper leaves, and oil cake, and were extracted using fermentation or water and boiled water. In tomato plants, foliar-application of fermented fertilizer is known to promote more growth than application by drenching, regardless of the number of treatments (once or twice). In our studies, however, drenching with fertilizer promoted growth more effectively than foliar-application in red pepper plants. Studies in both tomato and red pepper have shown that the number of treatments does not significantly alter growth. Liquid fertilizers produced by a fermentation-extraction method promoted greater levels of growth in tomato compared to red pepper, and growth was greater when fertilizers were applied 20 (rather than 40) days post-sowing. Red pepper and tomato shoot fresh weight were affected more by fermented fertilizers than plant height 20 days post-sowing. In red pepper, we observed increased shoot fresh weight when using fermented liquid fertilizers with concentrations of 0.1% or greater. Tomato shoot fresh weight increased similarly in response to fermented fertilizer treatments at the same concentration levels, except those derived from fish. Fermented fish liquid fertilizer was only effective in increasing tomato shoot fresh weight in concentrations exceeding 1%. Red pepper and tomato shoot fresh weight also increased more than plant height in our studies using fermentation liquid fertilizers at 40 days after sowing. Red pepper fresh weight increased with application of bone + fish meal, red pepper leaf, and oil cake fertilizers at concentrations of 0.1%, but not with fish liquid fertilizer in concentrations under 0.5%. Shoot fresh weight in tomato increased with all liquid fertilizers. Growth in red pepper and tomato may be influenced by different kinds of fertilizers due to combinations of macro- and micro-nutrients, or specific macro-nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphoric acid, and potassium. The mineral nutrients found in fish, bone and fish meal, red pepper leaves, and oil cake were not easily extracted by fermentation; thus, liquid fertilizers made using water and boiled water methods more effectively promoted growth in red pepper and tomato due to the larger amounts of macronutrients eluted.
This study was conducted to establish the nondestructive nutrient diagnosis method for nitrogen in tomato leaf using SCDS(specific color difference sensor). NFT(nutrient film technique) system was used in this experiment and nitrogen concentrations treated in nutrient solution were 0, 10, 50, 100, 150, 200, 300 and 600ppm. As nitrogen concentration in nutrient solution was increased from 0ppm to 150ppm, the stomatal resistance of tomato leaf was decreased abruptly, the $CO_2$ assimilation rate was increased but there was no big difference in the range of 100-500ppm. As the SCDS value of tomato leaf was increased, the $CO_2$ assimilation rate was increased linearly but the total average fruit weight and marketable yield were increased quadratically. The $CO_2$ assimilation rate was largely increased in the 0-3% range of leaf nitrogen content, but photosynthetic saturation was shown in 3.3-3.5%. The leaf nitrogen content was closely related to SCDS value of tomato leaf. Considering physiological activity, growth and yield of tomato, the optimum ranges of leaf nitrogen content were found to be 3.0-3.8% and the SCDS values equivalent for those ranges were 40.0-52.2.
Allelopathic chemicals exudated from plants stimulate or inhibit crops directly or indirectly. To prove the effects of allelochemics, we isolated and identified the compounds by bioassays on the monoculture and crosscropping cultre systems. p-Coumaric acid were exudated on all of the test crops such as tomato, red pepper, lettuce, chinese cabbage and sesame, but pyrogallol and phenylacetic acid on tomato. hydroquinone on red pepper and egg plant, pyrogallol on lettuce, and vanillic acid on chinese cabbage. The highest total concentration of allelochemics was $5,883{\mu}g$ on tomato, lowest was $220{\mu}g/g$ dry plant weight on sesame. On the cross-cropping culture of tomato-egg plant, tomato-red pepper, chinese cabbage-egg plant, chinese cabbage-red pepper and chinese cabbage-sasame, the plant height, aerial dry weight and total dry weight of the tomato and the chinese cabbage were inereased contrast with monoculture, but decreased greatly on red pepper and sesame. Growth rate of both crops on the cross-cropping culture of tomato-chinese cabbage declined, while that of chinese cabbage was increased but lettuce decreased on the chinese cabbage-lettuce cross-cropping culture contrast with monoculture.
A total of 94 tomato accessions were evaluated for the resistance to $Tomato$$spotted$$wilt$$virus$ (TSWV) using a Sw5-2 SCAR marker and bioassay. PCR products of the marker were approximately 574 bp, 500 bp, and 462 bp, among which the longest was linked to TSWV resistance allele of Sw5-b. This allele was only found in three accessions (09-438, 10-318, and 10-321) in which some individuals showed apparent recovery or stem necrosis symptom to a tomato isolate of TSWV-pb1. Thirty-five individuals (one per each accession) which were non-infected by ELISA were selected for further observation. Among these, 26 individuals that did not show any symptom at 5 months after inoculation were confirmed for viral infection by RT-PCR. TSWV-specific PCR amplicon was weakly detected in all 26 individuals including 'Eureta', a commercial F1 possessing the resistance allele of Sw5-b. The resistant genes in the selected individuals may play an important role for reducing the viral concentration in tissues of inoculated tomato plants and seems to be quantitatively controlled by several factors including Sw5-b gene.
Waste nutrient solution (WNS) that composed of nutrient solution of horticultural research institute in Japan and used for culture tomato in perlite hydroponics showed $1.9{\sim}2.4$ dS/m of EC and $5.5{\sim}7.1$ of pH. Although $NH_{4}^+$-N concentration of WNS decreased remarkably, the others did not change significantly as compared with supplied solution. The growth characteristics such as plant height, stem diameter, leaf length, and leaf width were increased as amount of compost was increased in 1 L WNS supply treatment. But there was not any regular tendency on growth characteristics in 2 L/plant WNS supply treatment. The chlorophyll content of tomato leaf was highest in I L/plant WNS supply and 4,000 kg/10a compost treatment. The fresh and dry weight, and yield of tomato fruit also increased with increase of amount of WNS and compost, and they were highest in 1 L WNS supply and 4,000 kg/10a compost treatment. The sugar content of tomato fruits was not influenced by amount of WNS and compost, fructose and glucose and total sugar was highest in 2 L/plant WNS supply and 2,000 kg/10a compost treatment. Therefore fertigation culture used WNS is environmentally friendly and can guarantee yield and quality of tomato fruits and growth of tomato plants.
