  • Objective : A study and development of Korean Bobsleigh athletes's shoe which considers their physical condition has yet to be completed. So this study examines the effects of running shoes used by athletes based on plantar pressure and sprint time in order to provide raw data for the development of bobsleigh shoes suitable for Koreans. Method : The study selected seven bobsleigh athletes as subjects and selected three pairs of spiked running shoes from three companies, which will be referred to as Company N (Type A), Company A (Type B), and Company M (Type C). To analyze sprint time and plantar pressure for each shoe, the subject of the study were instructed to wear the selected shoes and to drag a sled at maximum sprint for 15 meters for 15 meters for in each condition that would be in real bobsleigh competitions. Results : The average sprint intervals for each athlete in each pair of shoes revealed Type C produce the fastest sprint in the order of Type C < Type A< Type B. Shoe Type C also had the largest contact area in order of Type C > Type B > Type A (p<.01). None of the three shoe types seem to yield a distinct advantage in terms of maximum average pressure or maximum pressure. Conclusion : In the future, functional analysis should be carried out by comparing the material properties, hardness, and toe spring of shoes based on the Type C shoe from Company M in order to develop bobsleigh shoes suitable for Koreans.

  • A self-selected web survey was utilised to Investigate the preference of online holiday travellers to the Internet functions applied to the extensive decision-making process by adoptingthe Canberra tourism website as a case study in Australia. The use of web-based surveys is not at a mature stage, compared to other traditional surveys such as mail survey and telephone survey that have already-known home addresses and phone numbers as a frame population. The adopted web survey relies on non-probability sampling without a known frame population thatcan cause serious research errors. Therefore, the results of this study need to be compared to other official published statistics in order toverify reliability or credibility of the self-selected web survey. This study discusses the extent to which the self-selected web survey can be validated by finding the significant difference not only between the demographic results of web survey and those of official statistics released by several articles including the Graphic, Visualizations and Usability Center (GVU) at Georgia Tech research but also between the travel background features and those of ‘ACT Tourism Masterplan 2001-2005’published by the Canberra Tourism & Event Corporation (CTEC) located in Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

  • Background: Management of an agricultural food product system following a nuclear accident is indispensable for reducing radiation exposure due to ingestion of contaminated food. The present study analyzes the effect of agricultural countermeasures on ingestion dose following a nuclear accident. Materials and Methods: Agricultural countermeasures suitable for domestic farming environments were selected by referring to the countermeasures applied after the Fukushima accident in Japan. The avertable ingestion doses that could be obtained by implementing the selected countermeasures were calculated using the Korean Agricultural Countermeasure Analysis Program (K-ACAP) to investigate the efficiency of each countermeasure. Results and Discussion: Of the selected countermeasures, the management of crops was effective when radionuclide deposition occurred during the growing season of plants. Treatment by soil additive and topsoil removal was effective when deposition occurred during the nongrowing season of plants. The disposal of milk was not effective owing to the small contribution of milk to the overall ingestion dose. Clean feeding of livestock was effective when deposition occurred during the growing season of fodder plants such as pasture and rice-straw. Finally, the effect of food restriction increased with the soil deposition density of radionuclide. The practical effect of countermeasures was very small when the avertable ingestion dose was absolutely low. Conclusion: The agricultural countermeasures selected to reduce the radionuclide ingestion dose after a nuclear accident must be made appropriate by considering the accident situation, such as the soil deposition density of the radionuclide and the deposition date in relation to farming cycles.

  • In this study, nuclease-resistant RNA aptamers that are specific for Jurkat T leukemia cells were selected by a subtractive systemic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) method. A randomized nuclease-resistant RNA library was incubated with normal peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in each round to preclude RNAs that recognize the common cellular components on the surface of normal and cancer cells. The precluded RNAs were used for the selection of Jurkat T cell-specific aptamers, and the specific RNAs were then gradually enriched from start to the following selections. After 16 rounds of the subtractive SELEX, the selected aptamers were found to preferentially bind to Jurkat T cells, but not to the normal PBMC, evidenced by fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis. Thus, the subtractive SELEX can be used to identify ligands to cancer-specific biological markers without prior knowledge of the nature of markers. The aptamers could be applied to specific cell sorting, tumor therapy, and diagnosis, and moreover, to find cancer cell-specific markers.

  • Two species, P. pyrifolia and P. ussuriensis, of the genus Pyrus native to Korea, are valuable genetic resources that can be used for food, dietary supplement, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics. Bioactive compounds of the plant leaves are the main components that are used for the products. Farmers had cultivated a few individuals from the wild to produce fruits or leaves for traditional remedy or tea; however, bioactive components of their leaves are not tested. We selected some trees from the natural stand that have distinct traits for the improvement program. We investigated the bioassay on the extracts' bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity from the selected accessions and other accessions, including newly developed cultivars. The contents of the phenolic compounds and flavonoids from the leaf extracts of the selected accessions were higher than the commonly cultivated trees in both species but lower than 'Sanhyang' in P. ussuriensis. The antioxidant capacity was measured using two assay methods, DPPH and ABST. The selected cultivars also had higher inhibitory activity than common trees. The selected accession 'Cultivar 3' in P. pyrifolia had the highest radical scavenging activity than others. Although leaves of the accessions were used only in this study, all three selected individuals have the potential for cultivar in containing high bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity.

  • The calibration equations for Brix value determination of intact mango were developed using the NIR spectra in a short wavelength region from 700 to 1100 nm. Multiple linear regression (MLR) and partial least square regression (PLS) was used for the calibration. It was found that the best wavelength region for PLS calibration from 900 to 1000 nm was similar to the wavelength region selected by MLR from 906 nm to 996 nm. Both MLR and selected region PLS provided sufficiently accurate prediction equations for Brix determination of intact mango. For MLR, the prediction results were SEP = 0.45 Brix and Bias = -0.04 Brix while PLS prediction results were SEP : 0.46 Brix and Bias = -0.2 Brix. It was concluded that MLR and PLS would have similar abilities in making calibration equation for Brix determination of intact mango if the appropriate wavelengths or wavelength region were selected. The appropriate wavelength region for PLS regression could be assumed by using the wavelength region selected by MLR in place of random selection, The relationship between calibration results of MLR and PLS regression is discussed.

  • Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is one of the urogenital infections occurring in women worldwide. Candida albicans is generally observed among various types of microorganisms causing VVC. Antibiotic therapy is typical, and the use of Lactobacilli probiotics is to be recognized as a promising alternative. The aim of this study was to select vaginal lactobacilli with probiotic properties against C. albicans. In a previous study, we isolated 38 lactobacilli from vagina of Korean women and 20 isolates were shown to inhibit C. albicans. We further selected 10 isolates which were able to inhibit C. albicans less than $10^5CFU/mL$. Among these selected strains, Lactobacillus salivarius MG242 (identified by 16s rRNA sequencing) was finally selected based on its strong anti-candidal activity, acid/bile salt resistance and adhesion property. Indirect adhesion activity of MG242 measured by auto-aggregation assay showed more than 60% auto-aggregation after 5 h standing. Taken these results together, the selected strain MG242 may have potential for application in vagina health related products.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the effects of conservative treatment intervention for individual with scoliosis. Methods: Studies were selected through a search of computerized databases of the literature (KERIS, 2000-2010) using "early detection", "conservative treatment", "exercise", "physical therapy", "manipulation", "chiropractic", "therapy", "taping" and "orthosis" as keywords. Selected articles were classified by research design and statistical methods. Results: Application of the search strategy to the KERIS databases resulted in 132 articles. Based on titles and abstracts, 17 studies were selected, excluding articles of overlapping study, surgery, pharmacologic therapy and no correcting aim under conservative treatment. Among the 17 selected studies, the majorityof study design consisted of one group pretest-posttest design and additionally most of these studies were paired (or independent) t-test. The most frequently used intervention was exercise therapy. Conclusion: All articles showed that interventions were effective. Thus, early detection of scoliosis may be connected participation of early conservative treatment. It is important to reduce prevalence of scoliosis in adolescents using regular evaluation as an effective measure.
