Effects of temperature, soil moisture level, flooding, and soil microflora on decay of root galls in club root disease of Chinese cabbage were examined in the laboratory. Number of days required for complete decay of root galls was 3 days at $32^{\circ}C$ or higher, 12 days at $16{\sim}20^{\circ}C$ and 28 days at $8^{\circ}C$. As soil moisture content goes up, root gall decay became faster resulting 3 days for complete decay under saturated moisture condition at high temperature of $32^{\circ}C$, and 8 days under the same moisture level at $24^{\circ}C$. Soil moisture effect was relatively low at $24^{\circ}C$ compared to $32^{\circ}C$. Stimulation of decay by soil flooding was not observed at $32^{\circ}C$ but became apparent at $12^{\circ}C$. Influence of soil microflora on root gall decay was negligiable. Based on these results, temperature appears to be the most important factor affecting root gall decay in soil. Root gall decay is thought to be affected more easily by other environmental factors under low temperature conditions. Maturity of resting spores of Plasmodioprora brassicae in root galls tended to increase as time prolongs during root gall decay. Density of the resting spores was lower in fresh root galls where their maturity was also low as compared to completely decayed root galls. Number of resting spores in completely decayed root gall was $6.5{\times}10^{6}/g$ tissue and its maturity was over 95%.
In maize coleoptile segments where auxin transport capacity decreases with time following excision, susceptability of the tissue to transport inhibitors such as N-1-naphthylphthalamic acid (NPA), 3,4,5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA) or high concentrations of IAA was found to be rather increased. A time-dependent increase in the sensitivity to NPA can be postulated since the dose-response curve for NPA was shifted in the‘aged’tissue to the left (i.e. lower concentration). Preincubation of the tissue at a low temperature abolished the time-dependent sensitivity change, suggesting that cellular metabolism could be involved. The NPA-sensitive state was also brought about by calcium depletion of the tissue, which can be partially reversed by addition of calcium. Presence of exogenous IAA in the preincubation medium kept the auxin transport system from decay, implicating auxin as an endogenous controlling factor. Results of our experiments indicate a reversible, time-dependent changes of auxin transport system in which transport capacity and sensitivity to NPA are tightly coupled. Changes in the sensitivity to NPA were also seen in auxin action as well.
This study was conducted to analyze stem decay in Quercus mongolica and Quercus variabilis in Korea. To ensure even allocation, a total of 5,005 sample trees (2,504 Q. mongolica and 2,501 Q. variabilis) were cut and collected in five regions and 27 subregions. The trees were then examined for stump decay and assigned to four classes based on the degree of scar, tissue decay and decolorization, splitting, and tree hollowing. The results show that the decay rate of Q. mongolica was 66.1%, at least twice as high as that of Q. variabilis, which was rated at 35% (χ2 = 631.15, p < 0.001). The comparison among regions indicated that the highest ratio of Q. mongolica occurs in the Central Regional Forest Service zone (76.5%), followed by the Northern zone (74.8%) and Eastern zone (65.7%). In contrast, the greatest proportion of Q. variabilis is found in the Northern Regional Forest Service zone (38.6%), followed by the Southern (32.9%) and Eastern (37.8%) zones. A statistically significant difference was seen among the five zones (p < 0.05, p < 0.001). There was also a clear tendency for the proportions for the two species to increase with a rise in the DBH. With respect to age, however, a statistically significant difference was found (p < 0.01, p < 0.05) only in Q. mongolica, whose rate increased with the increase in age. Our results show that as the DBH and age increases, the conditions of tissue decay and decolorization are manifested in Q. mongolica, whereas scars are common in Q. variabilis.

We have developed a probe for measuring the light levels inside illuminated fruit. The probe has minimal effect on the light levels being measured and enables the sampling of the light flux at any point within the fruit. We present experimental light extinction rates within apple, nashi, kiwifruit, and mandarin fruit. Moving from the illuminated side to the far side of the fruit, the extinction level follows an initial power law decay as the light diffuses into the fruit then reduces to an exponential decay through the rest of the fruit. Significant variations in the rates of light extinction are found in the core, skin and differing flesh regions. Monte Carlo simulations of the light distribution in fruit, which use scattering and absorption coefficients for the diffusely scattering tissue, and boundary conditions for the skin effects, produce results that follow the experimental results closely.
In recent years, the optical properties of multiple-scattering media like tissue have been studied for their potential applications in medicine. In this work the optical properties of multiple scattering media were investigated using the time-resolved reflectance measurement. The reflected light was measured by time-correlated single photon counting system. The transport scattering and absorption coefficient are related to the initial rapid decay and the subsequent decay in reflected light, respectively. Also the optical properties of the samples were measured by conventional method, ie., using continuous wave light. When the distance between the light source and the detector is over 8mm, the optical coefficient can be measured accurately using the suggested method.

Cancer therapy using high-energy $^{12}$ C ions is successfully under way at HIMAC, Japan. An alternative beam to $^{12}$ C is $^{11}$ C ions. The merit of $^{11}$ C over $^{12}$ C is its capability for monitoring spatial distribution of the irradiated $^{11}$ C by observing the $\beta$$^{+}$ decay with a good position resolution. One of the several problems to be solved before its use for therapy is the amount of nuclear interaction that deteriorates the dose concentration owing to the Bragg curve. Utilizing the dedicated secondary beam course for R&D studies at HIMAC, we measured the total energy loss of $^{11}$ C ions in a scintillator block that simulates the soft tissue in human bodies. In addition to the total absorption $^{11}$ C peak, non-negligible bump-shaped contribution is observed in the energy spectrum. The origin of the bump contribution can be nuclear interaction of the incident $^{11}$ C ions with hydrogen and carbon atoms. Further studies to reduce the ambiguity in dose distribution are mentioned.
The conditions of cold storage of Citrus unshiu Marc. var. miyagawa produced in Cheju were investigated. Compared to the citrus fruits stored at room temperature, the content of soluble solids, total sugar, vitamin C and specific gravity decreased slightly on the fruits stored at $4^{\circ}C$ and 87% relative humidity. Decay ratio and weight loss were below 10% on keeping freshness relatively till late of March during cold storage. Weight loss, decrease of firmness and soluble solids occured gradually during cold storage. Nevertheless seal-packaging with 0.02 mm LDPE film or wax-coating of citrus fruits were effective on weight loss and appearance, decay ratio increased for long-term storage. It was needed to control humidity in cold chamber for preventing from decay and weight loss. Edible part ratio was decreased gradually by respiration, and peel and tissue of fruits were softened slightly by 60 days of cold storage. Decay ratio and weight loss of full-ripened citrus fruits were little during the storage for 100 days, compared to the fruits harvested early. Appearance and taste of citrus fruits stored for 4 month were good relatively, but decay occured rapidly on seal-packaging fruits putting out of cold room for a few days. Because of the difficulty of long-term storage for early variety of Citrus unshiu, the conditions and periods of cold storage would be determined after considering the physicochemical properties of fruits.

Nerine was originated from South Africa and around 30 kinds of species are distributed in worldwide. In present study we have characterized the condition of storage and growing conditions on the bulb propagation of Nerine by the tissue culture. Result indicated that the percentage of decrement, decay and sprouting of bulblets in the tissue culture was high at the higher temperature compare to lower temperature. The optimum conditions for storage and time were 12 weeks at $15^{\circ}C$ which were having 86.4% sprouting rate. The sprouting rate at different temperature and acclimation time, using bulblets in the tissue culture, were optimum at early June when temperature is relatively higher($22^{\circ}C$) that facilitate to breaking the dormancy. Growth characteristics and capacity of photosynthesis of Nerine were better at red and blue mixed lightness.

We have reported that anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury leads to the differential dysregulation of the complement system in the synovium as compared to meniscus tear (MT) and proposed this as a mechanism for a greater post-injury prevalence of post traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). To explore additional roles of complement proteins and regulators, we determined the presence of decay-accelerating factor (DAF), C5b, and membrane attack complexes (MACs, C5b-9) in discarded surgical synovial tissue (DSST) collected during arthroscopic ACL reconstructive surgery, MT-related meniscectomy, osteoarthritis (OA)-related knee replacement surgery and normal controls. Multiplexed immunohistochemistry was used to detect and quantify complement proteins. To explore the involvement of body mass index (BMI), after these 2 injuries, we examined correlations among DAF, C5b, MAC and BMI. Using these approaches, we found that synovial cells after ACL injury expressed a significantly lower level of DAF as compared to MT (p<0.049). In contrast, C5b staining synovial cells were significantly higher after ACL injury (p<0.0009) and in OA DSST (p<0.039) compared to MT. Interestingly, there were significantly positive correlations between DAF & C5b (r=0.75, p<0.018) and DAF & C5b (r=0.64 p<0.022) after ACL injury and MT, respectively. The data support that DAF, which should normally dampen C5b deposition due to its regulatory activities on C3/C5 convertases, does not appear to exhibit that function in inflamed synovia following either ACL injury or MT. Ineffective DAF regulation may be an additional mechanism by which relatively uncontrolled complement activation damages tissue in these injury states.
T1-, and T2-weighted imagings and FLAIR (fluid attenuated inversion recovery) imaging are fundamental imaging methods in the brain. T1-weighted imaging is a spin-echo sequence with short TR and short TE and produces the tissue contrast by different T1 relaxation times. In other words, short TR maximizes the difference of the longituidinal magnetization recovery between the tissues. T2-weighted imaging is a spin-echo sequence with long TR and long TE and produces the tissue contrast by different T2 relaxation times. Long TE maximizes the difference of the transverse magnetization decay between the tissues. FLAIR is an inversion recovery sequence using 180 degree inversion pulse. 2500 msec of inversion time is applied to suppress the CSF signal.
