  • This paper presents the performance of a full vehicle MR suspension system at different tire pressure. The pressure of tire is related to tire stiffness, which is significantly affects the performance of suspension system. Therefore, in this research, the effectiveness of tire pressure on full vehicle MR suspension is evaluated. As a first step, the characteristic of tire with respect to pressure is experimentally tested and modeled. After that, the governing equation of MR damper and full vehicle MR suspension system are derived. The skyhook controller is implemented and the vibration control performance of full vehicle MR suspension is evaluated via simulation with respect to the tire pressure.

  • This paper presents ride comfort characteristics of a quarter-vehicle magneto-rheological (MR) suspension system with respect to different tire pressure. As a first step, controllable MR damper is designed and modeled based on both the optimized damping force levels and mechanical dimensions required for a commercial full-size passenger vehicle. Then, a quarter-vehicle suspension system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire and the MR damper is constructed. After deriving the equations of the motion for the proposed quarter-vehicle MR suspension system, vertical tire stiffness with respect to different tire pressure is experimentally identified. The skyhook controller is then implemented for the realization of the quarter-vehicle MR suspension system. Finally, the ride comfort analysis with respect to different tire pressure is undertaken in time domain. In addition, a comparative result between controlled and uncontrolled is provided by presenting vertical RMS displacement.

As a first step, MR damper is designed and manufactured based on the optimized damping force levels and mechanical dimensions required for a commercial mid-sized passenger vehicle. After experimentally evaluating dynamic characteristics of the manufactured MR damper, the quarter-vehicle MR suspension system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire and the MR damper is constructed in order to investigate the ride comfort. After deriving the equations of the motion for the proposed quarter-vehicle MR suspension system, vertical tire stiffness with respect to different tire pressure is experimentally identified. Ride comfort characteristics such as vertical acceleration RMS and weighted RMS of sprung mass are evaluated under various road conditions.

  • The shimmy phenomenon, or the radial vibration of steering wheel, happens frequently at a high speed, complicated with suspension system, steering system, vehicle body, engine, transmission and tire. In this study, the suspension system and steering system are modeled by the reference of vehicle body design coordinates(T.L.H), the coordinate system usually used by passenger car maker. In addition, the theoretical results from numerical method have been investigated and compared with the experimental ones by the correlating analysis between the tire and sub-system. The steering and suspension system modeled for the numerical analysis are both independent type. This study developed an analysis program which could forecast the shimmy level in advance by the variation of properties in each system and the change in design of new model.

  • As a remarkable reduction of the vehicle noise, the important of tire noise which is generated from the vehicle and the necessity of the research for the noise reduction is being emphasized. In this study, the road noise which is excited by the interaction between tire and road has been studied. The subjective test(feeling test) according to SAE J1060 rating scale is applied to the evaluation of the road noise. The combination of the several tires and vehicles are made to consider the effect of the vehicle suspension and the tire structure for road noise. The vehicles with 3-different suspension system are applied to road noise test and the eight kinds of tires are selected. As the results, the effects of the vehicle suspension and tire structure which affects on road noise are investigated.

  • This paper presents design and performance evaluation of electro-rheological(ER) shock absorber for electronic control suspension(ECS). In order to achieve this goal, a cylindrical ER shock absorber that satisfies design specifications for a mid-sized commercial passenger vehicle is designed and manufactured to construct ER suspension system for ECS. After experimentally evaluating dynamic characteristics of the manufactured ER shock absorber, the quarter-vehicle ER suspension system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire and the ER shock absorber is constructed in order to investigate the ride comfort and driving stability. After deriving the equations of the motion for the proposed quarter-vehicle ER suspension system, the skyhook controller is implemented for the realization of quarter-vehicle ER suspension system. In order to present control performance of ER shock absorber for ECS, ride comfort and driving stability characteristics such as vertical acceleration and tire deflection are experimentally evaluated under various road conditions and presented in both time and frequency domain.

  • Ride comfort, one of the most important performances of a car, is affected by vibration, noise, dynamic movement, and ergonomic factors. Among these factors, ride comfort vibration is heavily affected by the seat system, tire, suspension, and body structure. In this study, vibration characteristics of seat, tire, suspension, and body structure are analyzed. The vibration transfer function from the road input to the human body is also investigated.
