  • The phase-averaged velocity fields of 3 dimensional turbulent wake behind a marine propeller measured by 2D PIV and stereoscopic PIV(SPIV) were compared directly. In-plane velocity fields obtained from the consecutive particle images captured by one camera in 2D PIV have perspective errors due to out-of-plane motion. However, the perspective errors can be removed by measuring three component velocity fields using SPIV method with two cameras. It is also necessary to measure three components velocity fields for the investigation of complicated near-wake behind the propeller for the suitable propeller design. 400 instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each of four different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}C\;and\;54^{\circ}$. They were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the propeller wake in the downstream region. The phase-averaged velocity fields show the viscous wake developed along the blade surfaces and tip vortices were formed periodically. The perspective errors caused by the out-of-plane motion was estimated by the comparison of 2D PIV and SPIV results. The difference in the axial mean velocity fields measured by both techniques are nearly proportional to the mean out-of-plane velocity component which has large values in the regions of the tip and trailing vortices. The axial turbulence intensity measured by 2D PIV was overestimated since the out-of-plane velocity fluctuations influence the in-plane velocity vectors and increase the in-plane turbulence intensities.

  • As a first step for aerodynamic analysis of vertical axis wind turbine, dynamic stall characteristics of airfoil was investigated. Dynamic stall of wind turbine airfoil is caused by severe variation of angle of attack and relative velocity of flow around airfoil. Angle of attack and relative velocity can be expressed with tip speed ratio. Variation of angle of attack is strongly dependent on the tip speed ratio. For tip speed ratio, 1.4 and free stream velocity, 15m/s, dynamic stall characteristics of wind turbine airfoil is compared with those of oscillating airfoil having same angle of attack variation.

  • Darrieus wind turbine blade is one of the vertical wind power system in which the lift of blade is used. In the calculation of wind power for the type of that, the multiple streamtubes method is known as an effective method. But it has big difference in the region of higher tip speed ratio because the incoming air velocity is used in the calculation of lift. The incoming air velocity is reduced from inlet to outlet continually by transferring energy to the wind blade. In this study, the air velocity on the blade, which is called blade velocity, is obtained with newly developed algorithm and used to determine the lift. And it is verified that applying blade velocity on the lift calculation cause the power prediction to improve dramatically in the region of higher tip speed ratio.

  • This experimental study is to investigate the intermittent spray characteristics of a pintle nozzle. High speed camera used in this expreiment with 9000fps. The factor, which controls the diesel spray, is the Injection pressure, ambient pressure and ambient temperature. In this paper, experiments were conducted free spray for the ambient pressure(3, 4, 5Mpa), nozzle Injection pressure(10, 14, 18MPa) and ambient temperature(293, 473K). With the higher opening pressure, the spray tip velocity and spray penetration increases while the spray angle decreases, On the other hand, With the higher ambient pressure, the spray angle increase while the spray tip penetration and spray tip velocity decrease. also, With the higher ambient temperature, the spray penetration decrease while the spray angle decrease.

  • In order to clarify the features of tip leakage vortex near blade tip region in a half-ducted axial fan with large bellmouth, the experimental investigation was carried out using a 2-dimensional LDV system. Three sizes of tip clearance (TC) were tested: those sizes were 1mm (0.55% of blade chord length at blade tip), 2mm (1.11% of blade chord length at blade tip) and 4mm (2.22% of blade chord length at blade tip), and those were shown as TC=1mm, TC=2mm and TC=4mm, respectively. Fan characteristic tests and the velocity field measurements were done for each TC. Pressure - flow-rate characteristics and two-dimensional velocity vector maps were shown. The vortex trace and the vortex intensity distribution were also illustrated. As a result, a large difference on the pressure - flow-rate characteristics did not exist for three tip clearance sizes. In case of TC=4mm, the tip leakage vortex was outflow to downstream of rotor was not confirmed at the small and reference flow-rate conditions. Only at the large flow-rate condition, its outflow to downstream of rotor existed. In case of TC=2mm, overall vortex behaviors were almost the same ones in case of TC=4mm. However, the vortex trace inclined toward more tangential direction. In case of TC=1mm, the clear vortex was not observed for all flow-rate conditions.

  • This paper presents a quasi-3-dimensional calculation method considering secondary flows in the impellers of diagonal flow blowers. A Quantitative estimation of the secondary flow effects is made by using secondary flow theories. In order to verify the validity of the adopted models, that is, span-wise mixing model and the tip clearance model, numerical simulations are performed for two different types of impellers of diagonal flow blowers which are designed differently. Numerical experiments are conducted for each of a constant tangential velocity type impeller, and a free vortex type impeller, both at two different flow coefficients. According to the simulation results, it was found that the present model considering span-wise mixing and tip clearance effect shows better agreements with the experimental data than those without these models in terms of the flow velocity and the angle distribution.

  • The evolutionary structure of tip vortices has been investigated with a two-dimensional LDV system for a plain and a slotted blade, respectively. To analyze the effect of slots which bypasses a part of main stream into the tip face, velocity profiles, vortex sizes, their displacements and turbulence intensities during one revolution of the rotor were measured by the phase averaging process. For the comparison of circumferential velocity components of the plain blade and the slotted blade, the peak values of the slotted blade were lower than those of the plain blade, and axial velocity components of the slotted blade were considerably larger than those of the plain blade. The slotted rotor blade enlarged the core size and made the vortex delayed compared with those of the plain blade at the same wake ages. Turbulence profiles had peaks inside the core radii and decayed gradually in the radial direction of vortex coordinate. Also, using a quasi 3-D LDV measurement technique the budget of turbulence kinetic energy was analyzed in radial direction of the vortex core.

  • Experimental investigations on the comparison of developments between transient jets and evolving jet diffusion flames have been made in initial injection period. To achieve this experiment, an ignition technique using a residual flame as the ignition source is devised. High speed Schlieren visualizations, and measurements including jet tip penetration velocities and jet widths of the primary vortex are employed to examine the developing processes for several flow conditions. It is seen that the developing behaviors in the presence of flame are greatly different from those in transient jet, and thus the flow characteristics in the transient part are also modified. The discernible differences are shown to consist of the delay of the rollup of the primary vortex, the faster spreading after the rollup due to exothermic expansion, and the survival of only a primary vortex. The growth of primary vortex in the transient jet is properly explained through an impulsively started laminar vortex prior to the interaction. It is also found that the jet tip penetration velocity varies with elapsed time and an increase in Res gives rise to a higher tip penetration velocity.

  • The characteristics of flow around a rotating propeller were investigated using PIV technique. For each of four different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}\;and\;54^{\circ}$four hundred instantaneous velocity fields were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the flow around a propeller. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show that the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces and the slipstream contraction in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component and strain rate had large values at the locations of the tip and trailing vortices. The boundary layer developed along the ship hull bottom surface of the ship stern provides a strong turbulent shear layer, affecting the vortex structure in the propeller near-wake. As the flow develops in the downstream direction, the trailing vortices formed behind the propeller hub move upward slightly due to the presence of the hull wake and free surface. The turbulence intensity has large values around the tip and trailing vortices. As the wake moves downstream, the strength of the vorticity diminishes and the turbulence intensity increases due to turbulent diffusion and active mixing between the tip vortices and adjacent wake flow.
