Cement-grouts are injected into limestone cavities beneath the road in the project area, in order to improve strength and reduce permeability; the extent to which grout has penetrated in cavities need to be monitored in order to determined effectiveness of cement-grout. Geophysical approaches, offer great potential for monitoring the grout injection process in a fast and cost-effective way as well as showing whether the grout has successfully achieved the target. This paper presents the ability of surface electrical resistivity to investigate the verification of the grout placement. In order to image the cement-grout, time-lapse surface electrical resistivity surveys were conducted to compare electrical resistivity images before and after injection. Cement-grout was imaged as anomalies exhibiting low resistivity than the surrounding rocks. In accordance with field monitoring, laboratory study was also designed to monitor the resistivity changes of cement-grout specimens with time-lapse. Time-lapse laboratory measurements indicated that electrical methods are good tool to identify the grouted zone. Pre-and post grouting electrical images showed significant changes in subsurface resistivity at grouted zone. The study showed that electrical resistivity imaging technology can be a useful tool for detecting and evaluating changes in subsurface resistivity due to the injection of the grout.
This paper deals with the seasonal variation of soil resistivity and the special characteristic for ground rods by lapse of time. The ground resistance was changed by humidity, temperature of earth and earth resistance. In this experiment, we studied the resistivity during the period from June 1995 to May 1996 by the soil and the corrosion of the ground rods. As a result, the soil resistivity during the period are appeared minimum in summer and maximum in winter. The loss in weight of Fe rod appeared higher than Cu, Al, Cu-Zn, and St. In the lapse of time, Fe rod was reduced 1.2 % later two years and 1.95 % later three years in weight. Cu rod was defected oxygens of 14.7 % later two years and 30.3 % later three years by EDX.

Time-lapse electrical resistivity measurements have been made in a scale model experiment for geological $CO_2$ sequestration in aquifer. Three types of $CO_2$ injection are tested in a water tank filled with glass beads. These are $CO_2$ dissolved into filtered tap water, $CO_2$ gas, and mineral oil. The mineral oil is a substitute for liquid phase of supercritical $CO_2$. For reconstructing three-dimensional resistivity images, we measure potential differences at 32 potential dipoles on the top surface of the tank due to two current dipoles on the front and back sides. The resultant resistivity images clearly show the movement of injected $CO_2$ in aquifer.
Successful field test results for high-current time-lapse electrical imaging in marine sediments area are discussed. Because field trial by commercially available equipments were failed, self-developed system which supports transmitting current up to 5 ampere was used. Some weak zones due to local fractures were detected, but the weak zone effect in this area by time-lapse measurements from sea level change was minor.
The resistivity method has been used to image the electrical properties of the subsurface. Especially, this method has become suitable for monitoring since data could be rapidly and automatically acquired. In this study, we developed a time-lapse inversion algorithm for the interpretation of resistivity monitoring data. The developed inversion algorithm imposes a big penalty on the model parameter with small change, while a minimal penalty on the model parameter with large change compared to the reference model. Through the numerical experiments, we can ensure that the time-lapse inversion result shows more accurate and focused image where model parameters have changed. Also, applying the timelapse inversion method to the leakage detection of an embankment dam, we can confirm that there are three major leakage zones, but they have not changed over time.
Electric resistivity monitoring was applied to evaluate the soft ground in reclaimed land in order to figure out the applicability of physical prospecting. For this, electrical resistivity monitoring data were acquired for total three months and analyzed those data with independent inversion, time-lapse inversion, and 4D inversion methods. The result was compared for various inversion methods so as to figure out what showed the soft soil most properly. Moreover, drilling and CPT(Cone Penetration Test) data were also used in order to find out if each of those inversion methods could distinguish either bed rock or the soft soil clearly. And according to the result, time-lapse inversion showed less inversion artifacts than independent inversion, so it could indicate the soft soil better. If data gained for a longer period than three months are used, 4D inversion has been found to be a more efficient analysis method than the time-lapse inversion method. Electrical resistivity monitoring on the soft soil has been found to be a useful method that can analyze the spatio-temporal electric state of the ground serially.
A infiltration experiment of river water has been conducted to evaluate the applicability of electrical resistivity monitoring methods in an area containing gravelly deposits in Nagaoka, Japan. Apparent resistivity data, which are inverted to obtain the resistivity distribution, are measured with a newly developed system. This system can collect 490 data in an hour and be controlled with PC to store the data. Subsurface resistivity sections, which are obtained from two-dimensional nonlinear inversion of time-lapse apparent resistivity data, enable us to estimate the direction of the flow and the rate of infiltration. The infiltration rate is estimated to be $4.4{\times}10^4m/s$ in the early stage of the experiment when the infiltration process is dominant.
Dc resistivity monitoring has been increasingly used in order to understand the changes of subsurface conditions in terms of conductivity. The commonly adopted interpretation approach which separately inverts time-lapse data may generate inversion artifacts due to measurement error. Eventually the contaminated error amplifies the artifacts when reconstructing the difference images to quantitatively estimate the change of ground condition. In order to alleviate the problems, we defined the subsurface structure as four dimensional (4-D) space-time model and developed 4-D inversion algorithm which can calculate the reasonable subsurface structure continuously changing in time even when the material properties change during data measurements. In this paper, we discussed two case histories of resistivity monitoring to study the ground condition change when the properties of the subsurface material were artificially altered by injecting conductive materials into the ground: (1) dye tracer experiment to study the applicability of electrical resistivity tomography to monitoring of water movement in soil profile and (2) the evaluation of cement grouting performed to reinforce the ground. Through these two case histories, we demonstrated that the 4-D resistivity imaging technique is very powerful to precisely delineate the change of ground condition. Particularly owing to the 4-D inversion algorithm, we were able to reconstruct the history of the change of subsurface material property.

Over the wide area, King Sejong Station and the nearby land are uncovered with snow and ice conditions. Therefore, the active layer on the permafrost has been formed to be much thicker than the other Antarctica region. Electrical resistivity survey of Wenner and dipole-dipole arrays was undertaken at a series of time in the freezing season at the King Sejong Station to delineate subsurface structure and to monitor active layer in permafrost terrain. Time-lapse resistivity structures are well in terms of the vegetation distribution, ground surface temperature, and snow depth. Horizontal high resistivity belt(>1826 Ωm) at very shallow depth is thickening with the lapse of time, probably caused by the freezing of the water in the pore spaces with decrease of ground temperature. Subsurface structures for the area of low snow-cover and vegetated zone area are comprised of 0~0.5 m deep high-resistive gravel-rich soil, 0.5~3 m deep low-resistive active layer, and the underlying permafrost. In contrast, the unvegetated area and high snow-buildup is characterized with high resistivities larger than approximately 2000 Ωm due to freezing of the soil throughout the year. Data interpretation and correlation schemes explored in this paper can be applied to confirm the active layer, which is expected to get thinner in additional survey during the thawing season.
This work describes the installation and preliminary measurements of an electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) system to monitor the injection of recycled water into a confined aquifer in the area of Sindos (Thessaloniki N. Greece). The aim is to provide, through time-lapse ERT measurements and processing, geoelectrical images of rather increased volumetric sampling around and between the holes and to obtain improved understanding of the flow and transport of the injected water. The details about the general setting, the construction and installation of the ERT cables into the boreholes are explained in full. Preliminary measurements involving single and cross-hole ERT measurements were obtained and processed with a 2D inversion algorithm to produce images of the subsurface. Results depict a very good correlation between ERT images and the lithology and resistivity logs; an indication of the reliability of the approach.
