  • An adaptive channel estimation technique for OFDM-based DTV receivers is proposed using a new mobility estimator. Sample mean techniques for channel estimation have displayed good performance in slow fading channels, because averaging reduces noise In channel estimation operation. This paper suggests an algorithm which selects the optimal number of symbols within which the sample mean of consecutive pilot data can be obtained. The designed mobility estimator determines the optimal number by comparing mobility variance and estimated noise valiance. The algorithm using the mobility estimator obtains an optimal channel function under time-invariant or time-variant multipath fading channels, thereby making the best BER performance.

  • MC-DS-CDMA is technique where a single data symbol is transmitted at multiple subcarriers which are orthogonal to each other. With this technique, frequency diversity can be achieved. Time variant channels lead to interchannel interference which increases the bit error rate for MC-DS-CDMA systems. The performance of PSAM MC-DS-CDMA system over time variant channels is analyzed. The BER performance of this system over multipath fading environment is evaluated, considering the channel estimation error, carrier frequency offset.

  • Traditional channel models for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication usually assume fixed velocity in static scattering environment. In the realistic scenarios, however, time-variant velocity for V2V results in non-stationary statistical properties of wireless channels. Dynamic scatterers with random velocities and directions have been always utilized to depict the non-stationary statistical properties of the channel. In this paper, a non-stationary geometry-based cooperative scattering channel model is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) V2V communication systems, where a birth-death process is used to capture the appearance and disappearance dynamic properties of moving scatterers that reflect the time-variant time correlation and Doppler spectrum characteristics. Moreover, our model has more straight and concise to study the impact of the vehicular traffic density on channel characteristics and thus avoid complicated procedure in deriving the analytical expressions of the channel parameters and functions. The numerical results validate our analysis and demonstrate that setting important parameters of our model can appropriately build up more purposeful measurement campaigns in the future.

  • In this paper, an equalization technique for OFDM(orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) in a time-variant multipath fading environment is described. A loss of subchannel orthogonality due to time-varying multipath fading channels leads to interchannel interference (ICI) which increases the error floor in proportion to Doppler frequency. A simple frequency-domain equalizer which can compensate the effect of ICI caused by time variation of multipath fading channel is proposed by modifying the previous frequency-domain equalization technique with taking into account only the ICI terms significantly affecting the error performance. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated via computer simulation by applying it to OFDM systems when the multipath fading channel is slowly time variant.

  • This paper proposes an efficient scheme to track the time variant channel induced by multi-path Rayleigh fading in mobile wireless Multiple Input Multiple Output-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems with null sub-carriers. In the proposed method, a blind channel response predictor is designed to cope with the time variant channel. The proposed channel tracking scheme consists of a frequency domain estimation approach that is coupled with a Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) time domain estimation method, and does not require any matrix inverse calculation during each OFDM symbol. The main attributes of the proposed scheme are its reduced computational complexity and good tracking performance of channel variations. The simulation results show that the proposed method exhibits superior performance than the conventional channel tracking method [4] in time varying channel environments. At a Doppler frequency of 100Hz and bit error rates (BER) of 10-4, signal-to-noise power ratio (Eb/N0) gains of about 2.5dB are achieved relative to the conventional channel tracking method [4]. At a Doppler frequency of 200Hz, the performance difference between the proposed method and conventional one becomes much larger.

  • Purpose - Since China has been South Korea's biggest export destination, uncertainty shocks originating from it would influence South Korea's exports. This paper evaluates the effects of China's economic policy uncertainty on Korea's exports to explore the transmission channels. Design/methodology - Incorporating endogeneities and nonlinearities, this study employs a quarterly time-varying parameters vector autoregressive model to investigate the relationships between China's economic policy uncertainty and Korea's exports, where the overparameterization due to time-varying specifications is overcome by a novel stochastic model specification search framework. According to previous theoretical studies, this paper assesses two channels, demand shock channel and exchange rate channel, through which foreign uncertainty affects Korea's exports. This paper identifies the primary drivers of Korea's aggregate exports and analyzes the rationales for the time-variant impacts of China's economic policy uncertainty on Korea's exports to China. Findings - Our empirical results reveal that Korea's aggregate exports are less responsive to China's economic policy uncertainty shocks and significantly move together with global demand. In contrast, its bilateral exports to China are highly responsive in a negative and time-variant way. Moreover, Chinese investment is an important channel through which China's economic policy uncertainty affects Korea's exports to China after 2010. Further, the time-variant effects of China's economic policy uncertainty on Korea's exports to China are related to changes in China's foreign trade policies, global economic conditions, and China's degree of economic freedom. Originality/value - Few previous studies touch the effects of external uncertainty shocks on South Korea's exports. This paper attempts to fill this gap and explicitly investigate the impacts of China's economic policy uncertainty on Korea's exports from a time-varying perspective. As Korea is an export-oriented economy, this study provides insights for the Korean government to understand the transmissions of external uncertainty better.

  • Underwater acoustic communication channel parameters consist of impulse response, delay spreading, scattering function, coherence bandwidth, frequency selective fading, coherence time and time variant magnitude fading statistics on which communication system modem and channel coding are designed. These parameters are influenced by sound velocity profile, platform motion and sea surface roughness in given acoustical oceanography condition. In this paper, channel model based on phasor, channel simulator, measurement and analysis method of channel parameters are given in a fixed source-to-receiver system and the parameters are analyzed using shallow water experimental data. For two different source-to-receiver ranges of 300 m and 600 m, the parameters are characterized by three multipaths such as a direct, a surface reflection path with time variant scattering and a bottom reflection path. The results present a channel modelling method of a fixed source source-to-receiver system, channel parameters measurement and analysis methods and a system design and performance assessment method in shallow water.

  • Doubly-selective channel estimator for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) systems is proposed in this paper. Based on the generalized complex exponential basis expansion model(GCE-BEM), we describe the time-variant channel with time-invariant coefficients over multiple OFDM blocks. The time variation of the channel destroys the orthogonality between subcarriers, and the resulting channel matrix in the frequency domain is no longer diagonal, but the main interference comes from the near subcarriers. Based on this, we propose a channel estimator with low pilot ratio. We first develop a least-square(LS) estimator under the assumption that only the maximum Doppler frequency and the channel order are known at the receiver, and then verify that the correlation matrix of inter-channel interference(ICI) is a scaled identity matrix based on which we derive an optimal pilot insertion scheme for the LS estimator in the sense of minimum mean square error. The proposed estimator has the advantages of low pilot ratio and robustness against inter-carrier interference.

  • Time-variant mobile radio fading channels distort amplitude, frequency and phase of a transmitted signal. On channels that have time-variant spectral nulls, the conventional equalizers which have low convergence speed and high sensitiveness to phase distortion yields very poor error rate performance. In this paper, the performance of a combined structure with the data-recycling algorithm and fractionally spaced equalizer (FSE) has been investigated on time-variant mobile radio fading channels through computer simulations and compared to other kinds of equalizers. The results show that the data-recycling FSE has excellent capabilities for tracking rapidly time-variant mobile channels and effective compensation for phase distortion.
