Since seeds of Italian ryegrass should be imported every year, it is necessary to investigate the prossible production of seeds in Italian ryegrass field after rice. Seven Italian ryegrass varieties were planted on October 8, 1986 at National Honam Crop Experiment Station at Iksan and clippings were made on April 10 and April 30 in 1987. Headings of K-11 and T.N.T were earlier than those of Tetrone and Bettina. For all varieties tested, heading date was delayed and 1,000 grain weight was decreased linearly as the clipping was made later. Length, width and thickness of a grain were reduced by clipping and later clipping, while tetraploid varieties produced larger grains than diploid varieties. The germination percentage and germination speed at $25^{\circ}C$ were higher than at 15$^{\circ}C$. The final germination percentage was lower at the later clippings and was higher at 15$^{\circ}C$, and earlier varieties showed higher germination percentage. Uniformity of germination was greater at $25^{\circ}C$ and was decreased as the clipping was made later, and the eariler varieties such as K-11 were germinated more uniformly. Average number of days to germination was longer at 15$^{\circ}C$ than at $25^{\circ}C$ and was longer at later clipping. The germination percentage was decreased linearly as the heading was delayed, while it increased linearly as the 1,000 grain weight was increased.
Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to investigate allelopathic potential of some weed species on alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.) germination and seedling growth. In the comparison between top(leaves+stems) and root extracts, top extract exhibited greater allelopathic effects on alfalfa germination than that of root. The various weed species extract differently responded to alfalfa test species, WL-320, in terms of allelopathic effect. Top and root aqueous extracts of lambsquarter(Chenopodium album L.), giant foxtail(Setaria faberii Herrm.), redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), velvetleaf(Abutilon theophrasti Medic.), crabgrass(Digitaria sanguinalis L.), canada thistle(Cirsium arvense L.) and prostrate knotweed(Polygonium aviculare L.) significantly inhibited germination, seedling length, weight, vigor, and rate of germination of alfalfa. The regression slopes of various top extracts showed that velvetleaf(b=3.69) extracts were the most inhibitory, while large crabgrass(b=2.39) extracts had the least allelopathic effect on alfalfa germination. Germination, seedling length and weight of alfalfa were inversely proportional to the concentration of dried velvetleaf extracts. Also, more of the toxic effects were observed from the dried extracts compared to the fresh extracts. Residue of velvetleaf inhibited significantly alfalfa emergence and survival percentage compared to the control. The emergence and survival percentage of alfalfa were 44%, 57% at 1.0% residue treatment, respectively. When weed residues were mixed with silica sand with incubation time, velvetleaf residue most inhibited alfalfa growth. The degree of inhibition increased as incubation time increased. An incubation for 72h caused the greatest inhibition of alfalfa growth. These results demonstrate the different allelopathic activity of weed species extracts on alfalfa and suggest that weed may affect alfalfa growth and development through the inhibitory effects of allelochemicals present in weed tissue.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of various heat treatments on the microbial reduction and germination of red radish seeds for the development of effective and economical sterilization methods of improving microbial safety without reducting the germination rate. Hydrothermal treatment was conducted at 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, and $90^{\circ}C$ for 30 and 60 seconds, and dry heat treatment was performed at 70, 80, 90, and $100^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes. In the seeds that underwent the hydrothermal treatment, time had little effect on the microbial reduction. There was no significant microbial reduction over time. However, there was significant microbial reduction as temperatures increased (p<0.001). The total plate count (TPC) was reduced by more than 3 logs, and Listeria monocytogenes was not detected at temperatures above $70^{\circ}C$. In the seeds that were subjected to the dry heat treatment, the TPC and the population of the L. monocytogenes were significantly reduced as the temperatures increased (p<0.001). After treatment at $100^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes, the TPC and the L. monocytogenes were reduced by 3 logs. As with the microbial reduction, time had little effect on the germination. There were no significant changes in the germination after the hydrothermal treatment over time; but at the temperatures above $75^{\circ}C$, the germination rate significantly decreased as the temperature increased (p<0.001). When the seeds were soaked after the hydrothermal treatment, their germination was stimulated. The dry heat treatment at temperatures of $80^{\circ}C$ and higher significantly decreased the germination rate as the temperature increased (p<0.001). Dry heat treatment before the germination of the seeds soaked in distilled water for three hours significantly decreased the germination at temperatures greater than $90^{\circ}C$ (p<0.05). This study showed that appropriate heat treatments can increase the microbiological safety and germination of red radish seeds.
ATP contents of soybean(Glycine max Merrill) and mungbean (Phaseolus radiatus L.) seeds being germinated with Hoagland solution at $30^{\circ}C$ for 6 days were determined. In pregerminated seed, ATP contents in soybean and mumgbean were 11.4 and 63.0$\mu$g/g fresh seed respectively. During germination, the highest ATP content of soybean seeds was 550% of initial content on 2nd day and that of mungbean was 480% on 1st day after germination. ATP content in cotyledon of soybean and mungbean were increased up to 4th and 1st day after germination respectively, thereafter both were decreased, but those in the root, including the hypocotyl, of both seeds were continuously increased with germination progress.
The effects of ultrasound stimuli on the germination and sprout growth of brown rice were investigated. Ultrasound was applied to brown rice at the frequencies of 28, 40, and 60 kHz before germination test and it was germinated in three methods (Type I, II and III). Type I was to soak brown rice into water for 60 hours. Type II was to expose brown rice to air for 48 hours after soaking them into water for 12 hours. Type III was a repetitive method of water-soaking and air exposure for 12 hours respectively. The most effective method for the germination was Type III without ultrasound. However, Type I was a best method after ultrasound treatment. As power of ultrasound increased, sprouts grew faster after brown rice were treated in 40%, 70%, and 100% power (0.137, 0.241, and 0.344 $W/cm^2$) at 40 kHz. The good treatments for fast sprout growth of brown rice at each frequency were the 28 kHz-10min group, the 40 kHz-5min group, and the 60 kHz-20min group of Type I. The best effective treatment was the 40 kHz-5min group at 0.344 $W/cm^2$ and at that condition the time required for sprout growth of 2.5 m was 51.9 hours. The ultrasound stimuli was very effective in the beginning of the rice germination, and the germination ratio was more than 95% in all ultrasound treatments.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of modified drum priming and 24-Epibrassinolide (24-EBL) treatment to improve the seed quality for export. 40, 50 and 60% seed moisture content (SMC) of hydrated seeds were incubated for 16 and 24 h in a container with a relative humidity of 99% at 26 rpm for a modified drum priming treatment. The treated seeds were sown at $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$ (12/12h, light/dark) with four replications of 25 seeds on pleated paper. The seeds were hydrated with water or 24-EBL solutions of $10^{-7}$, $10^{-8}$ and $10^{-9}M$, respectively. The germination of the modified drum primed seeds (24 h incubation after 60% SMC hydration) improved to 1.6 days mean germination time (MGT) and $46%{\cdot}day^{-1}$ germination rate (GR), while the untreated seeds showed 2.1 days MGT and $28%{\cdot}day^{-1}$ GR. The modified drum priming (60% SMC and 24 h incubation with $10^{-9}M$ 24-EBL) showed improved results in MGT (1.8 days) and GR (55%) at $20^{\circ}C$, whereas untreated seeds showed 2.3 days MGT and 44% GR. Under $30^{\circ}C$, germination of modified drum primed seeds was significantly improved in GP (80%), GR ($31%{\cdot}day^{-1}$), HS (55%) and MGT (3.3 days), however, untreated seeds showed decreased GP (27%), GR ($22%{\cdot}day^{-1}$), HS (55%) and MGT (4.8 days). This study showed that the germination of lettuce seeds is enhanced by 24 h drum incubation with 24-EBL and this method can be used effectively to achieve the benefits of early germination and uniform seedling development. In addition, these treatments circumvent thermo-dormancy of lettuce seed and have a possibility of high-quality and environment-friendly seed processing.
This study was conducted to improve the germination percent and germination speed by seed priming using polyethylene glycol (PEG) 8,000 solution on Acer mono seed because it has low and irregular germination characteristics. Seed priming was carried out under 0, -0.25, -0.5, -1.0 and -2.0 MPa of water potential at $20^{\circ}C$ for 3 days. Primed seeds showed higher percent germination, germination speed, mean germination time (MGT) and germination performance index (GPI) than unprimed seeds. Especially, primed seed with -2.0 MPa of water potential had the highest germination properties. And primed seeds had a lower dormancy than the unprimed seeds. Relative growth rate and T/R ratio of seedling from primed seeds were measured to survey the effect of seed priming on the seedling vigor as well as seed germination. The seedlings from primed seeds at -2.0 MPa of water potential showed the highest relative growth rates of height and root collar diameter, however, the lowest value in T/R ratio. This study suggested that seeds priming at -2.0 MPa of water potential under $20^{\circ}C$ for 3 days enhanced not only the percent germination, germination speed, MGT and GPI but also the vigor and growth of seedlings in Acer mono.

Salicornia europaea (glasswort) is succulent, annual, halophytic plant mainly distributed throughout reclaimed land or salt marsh. It has strong tolerance to salt so that it plays the part of the pioneer species in the first succession. According to domestic and foreign studies, S. europaea contains plenty of minerals and antioxidant in the body. Since people take note of an availableness of this plant as health diet, the natural growth sites are threatened. In addition to development of salt marsh and sea shore, imprudent harvest has a bad effect to S. europaea population maintenance. To seek ways to preserve the population of this plant, we carried out the continuity of seed germination and restoration test. Seokmo Island, Daebu Island, Youngjong Island and Sudokwon landfill in Korea are selected sites for research. Result of germination continuity shows that most S. europaea seeds germinate on March but no more after July. However the germination was occurred after that time in the greenhouse. So we concluded that no germination after July is a matter of environmental condition not the number of remaining seeds. Also germination was seldom occurred in the spot where seeds production was not happened. In result of continuity test of seed germination by soil depth, germination was occurred vigorously only in top soil. From these results, we note that most S. europaea germinate in the early spring, and germination is finished by July. And this rapid germination speed makes the number of seeds in soil seed bank rare. If a large number of S. europaea in some area are harvested after July, the number of this species will dramatically decrease in that area the following year. In Seokmo Island, we carried out reintroduction experiment by sowing S. europaea seeds. On the first year, a small number of S. europaea settled and they produced seeds successfully. On April 2010, the second year, we observed many S. europaea in seed sowing sites. And we found out that plowing is more efficient than treatment sea water for settlement of S. europaea.
The effects of liquid phase ozonation on seed dormant alleviation and subsequent seedling growth were studied using two plant seeds of Indian jointvetch (Aeschynomene indica L.) and Indian mallow (Abutilon avicennae Gaertn.). At a constant ozone concentration ($80g/m^3$), contact time varied from 10 to 60 min with 10 min interval. Germination rate, root length, and specific root length were compared after 3-day incubation on gel-medium. The germination rate increased significantly (p<0.05) in the 50 min treatment of Indian mallow by 30% compared to the control. Enhanced root elongation was observed in the seeds of 30 min treatment of Indian jointvetch and 30~50 min treatment of Indian mallow. Specific root length, an indicator of environmental change, did not show significant changes, suggesting the level of ozone treatment has no adverse effect on seedling development. The results indicate that liquid phase seed ozonation can be an effective on-site germination alleviation method in the application of phytoremediation.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of germination condition and drying temperature on growth and physicochemical properties of brown rice. Three brown rice seeds of Ilpumbyeo, Dasanbyeo and Heugjinjubyeo were stored at room temperature for six weeks to test the time-sequence germination viability. Relatively stable germination ratio was maintained until 2 weeks after storage. However, 3 weeks after storage, germination ratio of brown rice seeds started to decrease rapidly and their germination ratio was lower than 80%. For this reason, brown rice was recommended for seeding within 2 weeks after hulling. During the initial 5 days, germination ratio of 24 hours pre-soaking brown rice was higher about 2-3% than that of non-soaking brown rice. The $25^{\circ}C$ was considered as the most favorable temperature for brown rice germination, because of the high germination ratio and desirable coleoptile growth of the brown rice, and little seed rotting symptoms. The scanning electron micrographs showed the structural differences between hot-air dried and freeze dried germinated-brown rice kernel. In the freeze dried germinated-brown rice, seed coat (pericarp, tegmen and aleurone layer) was mechanically disrupted from the endosperm, and many cleavages were observed among starch storing cells and starch granules. The endosperm of freeze-dried brown rice kernels formed the sponge-like structures and showed the fragile traits. For this reason, hot-air drying is considered as more suitable method than freeze drying for germinated-brown rice. The crude protein and amylose contents were slightly changed, but there were no significant differences during the germination period. Crude fiber content was decreased, but crude Int and total amino acid contents were increased as seeding days increased. A rapid increase in $\alpha$-amylase activities of germinating brown rice was observed at S days after seeding, and $\alpha$-amylase activities were decreased from 8 days after seeding. Total free sugar contents were decreased during the germination period. There was continuous decline in the contents of sucrose and glucose until 8 days after seeding, but fructose and maltose content were gradually increased from the 5 days after seeding.
