  • The fruiting phase of rape under transplanting and direct-sowing conditions has been studied at Mokpo during the 2 years period from 1970 to 1971. Two varieties, Yudal and Miyuki were used in this study. The planting space and sowing time were also incorporated into this study. The results could be summarized as follows: 1. The plant tape of rape was nearly umbrella-shaped of all, but has changed to the laid elliptical-shaped, broadly ovate and spindle-shaped under different varieties and cultural conditions in the plant diagram(Fig. 2). 2. The length of the primary branches for each nodes had a tendency to the symmetric apical curve with the apex at the upper 10-12th node in the transplanting. but to the upper bias apical curve with the apex at the upper 5-7th node in the dense-sowing(Fig.3). 3. The ear of main stem was longer, more pods, heavier 1, 000 grains and more grain yield than ear of primary branches of all, Especially, as for that, the rate of yield constitution per plant in the direct-sowing was higher than in the transplanting(Fig. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9). 4. The ear-length of the primary branches for each nodes had a tendency to the relatively slowly apical curve with the apex at the upper 3-4th node in the transplanting, but to the lower bias apical curve with the apex at the upper 2nd node in the dense-sowing. Especially, the possibility of growth at the lower ears was few in the early variety (Fig. 4). 5. The number of pod per ear on the primary branches for each nodes had a .tendency to the curve of ear-length with the apex at the upper 5-8thnode in the transplanting and at the upper 4-5th node in the dense-sowing (Fig. 5). Accordingly, a high positive correlation was found between the ear-length and number of pod per ear (Table 2) 6. In the transplanting, the high rate of effective ear was from the upper nods to the 12th node, but below the 16-17th nodes was ineffective. However, in the early dense-sowing the high rate of effective was to the 7th node. but below the 10th nodes was. ineffective. Especially, in the early variety has difficult to secure of poi-numbers for ineffective of the lower nodes(Fig. 6.). 7. The density of pod setting of the ear of main stem was the longest of all ears, and the lower nods were, the shorter it became. That had a tendency to the evidently apical growth. However. in the early variety, it was lengthened according to growth of ear-length(Fig.7). 8. The pod-length of the medium nodes was longer than the upper and lower, and the possitive correlation between pod-length and number of grain per poi was very high(Table 2.). 9. In the grain yield per node of primary branches, the most yielding node of transplanting was the upper 9th node, of dense-sowing 4-5th node(Fig 8.), and the possitive correlation between grain yield per node and ear-length or number of pod per ear was very high(Table 2). 10. The grain yield of ear of main stem was higher than that of primary branches in the percentage of dependence for grain yield per plant. The limint node of 50% of dependence to cumulative grain yield per plant was the upper 7-8th node in tranplanting, in the early dense-sowing 4-5th node, and in tke late dense-sowing-3th node(Fig. 9). 11. In the weight of 1, 000 grains the lower nodes were, the lighter it becames in dense-sowing. Therefore, this was also lighter than in the transplanting to the (Fig. 10.). 12. The oil content of grain at the medium nodes was low in the early variety, but at the ear of main stem and upper 1st node it was extremely high(Fig. 11.).

  • To study the effects of different nursing methods and transplanting on the growth of rice plant (Oriza sativa L.) in southern region of Korea, Kumo-byeo, Palgong-byeo and Dongjinbyeo were transplanted from April 20 to July 20 at an interval of 15 days with 8 days old seedling (infant seedling) and 25 days old box-seedling for machine transplanting, and 45 days old conventional seedling. Threshold transplanting date in southern region of Korea were June 26 for 8 days old seedling, July 1 for 25 days old seedling and] July 11 for 45 days old seedling for Kumo-byeo, and June 21, June 30, July 10 for Palgong-byeo, June 10, June 24, July 5 for Dongjin-byeo, respectively. Yield has no uniform tendency according to the transplanting date. However, yield were greater in the order of 8 days old seedling >25 days old seedling> 45 days old seedling in Kuma-byeo and 25 days old seedling (equation omitted)8 days old seedling (equation omitted)45 days old seedling in Palgong-byeo, 45 days old seedling(equation omitted)25 days old seedling(equation omitted) 8 days old seedling in Dongjin-byeo. The optimum accumulated air temperature during yield productive stage around heading (40 days from 10 days before heading to 30 days after heading) for high yield were 1,003$^{\circ}C$ for 8 days old seedling, 1,014$^{\circ}C$ for 25 days old seedling and 1,027$^{\circ}C$ for 45 days old seedling in Kumo-byeo. And they were 1,018$^{\circ}C$, 1,015$^{\circ}C$, 1,086$^{\circ}C$ in Palgong-byeo and 998$^{\circ}C$, 984$^{\circ}C$, 949$^{\circ}C$ in Dongjin-byeo, respectively. Earlier transplanting with 8 days old seedling showed higher ratio of broken rice and green kerneled rice in Kuma-byeo, and late transplanting after July 5 showed significant high rate of green kerneled rice. Palgong-byeo and Dongjin-byeo also showed high rate of green kerneled rice at transplanting after July 5.

  • Cotton has been an important fiber crop in Korea for a long time. The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of planting and transplanting dates, transplanting density and fertilizer application rate on seed cotton and lint yields, and gross income for barley-cotton double cropping in southern part of Korea. Transplanting culture of upland cotton cultivar Mokpo 4 on June 10 to 20 produced 80 to 83% more in seed cotton yield and 79 to 82% more in lint yield compared with the yields of direct planted on June 10 just after harvesting naked-barley. Mokpo 4 was better than Suwon 17 and Paymaster for the transplanting culture after barley harvest in double cropping. Optimum fertilizer application rate was N 80-P$_2$O$_{5}$ 78-K$_2$O 106 kg /ha, and optimum transplanting density was 70$\times$20cm for the transplanting culture of upland cotton after barley in double cropping system. The highest total yields 5.03 to 5.09t /ha in barley-cotton double croppings were harvested in barley drill-seeding and cotton transplanting culture on June 10 to 20 compared with seed cotton yield 1.51t /ha of the cotton monoculture planted on May 1. Their gross income also was 40% more than that of the cotton monoculture, and 30% more than the cotton direct seeding just after barley harvest on June 10. Cotton intercropping between barley rows provided 2-11% more in gross income compared with cotton direct seeding after barley harvest on June 10. Of the cotton intercroppings between barley rows, cotton intercropping of one row between the barley rows of 60cm width provided 5 to 9% more in gross income than the other cotton intercroppings between barley rows.s.

  • This study was carried out to determine the proper transplanting time of Platanus occidentalis L. (plane tree, sycamore) with 5 to 6 cm and 25 to 30 cm in diameter of breast height at the forest nursery of Chonnam National University in 1977. For that purpose, the experiment of the time of transplantation, and the moisture content and soluble sugar were analysed. The results are as follows: 1. Both its rooting and growth were slightly different in the period of January to early April (before bud-break), but remarkably declined after its bud-break (mid-April to May). 2. And also, its moisture content and soluble sugar were slightly different (January to early April), but, on the other hand, considerably increased in the content of moisture and sharply decreased in soluble sugar after bud-break (mid-April to May). 3. In comparision with healthy trees, rooting and growth of trees infected with Cankers were unusually retarded and its moisture content and soluble sugar were much less. 4. The proper time to plant sycamore was recognized to be the period of November to March, since the higher amounts of soluble sugar and the lesser amounts of moisture in that period. 5. The sudden exposure to the sun of the boles of diseased and wounded trees could be in death in case of sun-scald on the side of south-west. 6. Pruning wounds should be treated with an antiseptic, as soon as they are made, to prevent entrance of decay or disease while the wound is healing. 7. The wound and sun-scald can be presented by covering the trunk with straw ropes before transplantations.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the proper seeding methed for direct seeding culture of rice in puddled soil at ill-drained paddy field. Mangeumbyeo was seeded on May 11 with drill seeder attached to cultivater, dibbling seeder attached to transplanter and power dust blower. And to determine the proper flooding time after seeding, Mangeumbyeo was seeded on May 7 and June 1 with drill seeder. Emergence ratio wasn't significantly different between drill seeder seeding and dibbling seeder seeding but emergence was very low with power dust blower. Working hour for seeding was shortened in the order of power dust blower, drill seeder and dibbling seeder, and these seeding methods saved the working hour remarkably compared with machine transplanting of infant seedling by omitting the procedures of raising seedling and transplanting. Lodging occurred slightly in all seeding methods. However, yield wasn't significantly different between machine transplanting of infant seeding and direct seeding culture in puddled soil except power dust blower. When field was flooded on seeding date, the emergence period was shortened, emergence ratio was increased and weed occurrence was decreased. Yield was highest when flooding was done on seeding date as the number of panicle per m$^2$ and the number of spikelets per m$^2$ were higher than any other flooding time.

  • We investigated the effect of infection time of CGMMV on the growth and quality of watermelon and cucumber plants. The effect (damages by CGMMV) was estimated on the watermelon where CGMMV had been inoculated at different growth stages, vegetative (transplanting stage, vegetative growth stage) and reproductive growth stage (fruiting stage and fruit hypertrophy stage). In the case of cucumber, CGMMV was inoculated at transplanting stage and Erst flowering stage, respectively. When watermelon was infected with CGMMV at vegetative growth stage, vine length, internode length, leaf area, and fruit weight of the plants largely decreased compared with control plants, while the infected plant growth was not very different from control plants when it was infected at reproductive growth stage. Brix of the fruit of watermelon also decreased when the plants was infected with the virus earlier than fruiting stage. The occurrence of 'Pisubag', internal discoloration and decomposition of watermelon fruits, tended to be increased as earlier infection time with CGMMV In the case of cucumber infection time with CGMMV did not influence earlier growth of the plants, but did later growth showing that plant height, vine length, internode length, number of leaf, leaf wide, and leaf length of the plants decreased as infection time became to be earlier.

  • This study was intended to investigate the temporal and spatial variabilities of dry matter, nitrogen content, chlorophyll of paddy rice and yield caused by different rates of nitrogen application. An experimental field was divided into 45 plots of 3.48 ${\times}$ 12 m in size and application rate of nitrogen varied from 0 to 235% with an increment of 25% based on the standard rate of N-P$_2$O$_{5}$-K$_2$O=12-8-8 kg/10a. The measurements were made 8 times every 9-10 days after the transplanting. About 60 days after the transplanting, there exhibited little variabilities in the dry matter caused by different rates of nitrogen application. After that. however, there showed large variabilities and the dry matter increased with the application rate. The nitrogen content of paddy also increased with the application rate but it was inconsistent. After the tillering period, the nitrogen content remained constant. In the early stage of the tillering period the nitrogen content decreased in spite of increase in the dry matter. However. after a certain period of time it increased with the dry matter. There were little variabilities of chlorophyll after the transplanting. However, the SPAD increased with application rate of nitrogen as the paddy grew. After the tillering period SPAD was not affected by the different rates. More yield was obtained at the plots where larger nitrogen content was measured.d.

  • In the year 2013, onions cultivation in Jeonnam province suffered by frost-pillar damage. To reveal the aspects of the cause and outbreak, we surveyed those damaged areas. Usually the frost-pillar damage occurred in February. But the outbreak aspect is so unforeseeable. In 2013, the damage was shown as 10.6% in onion fields including paddy fields, but no damage was noticed in 2014. The damage was noticed as 77.8% in paddy fields and 30.1% in upland. And, by the difference of the onion transplanting date, it occurred as 0.7% by the middle of November to the early of November, 22% by the middle of November and 69.0% by the early of December. If one performed the supplementary planting at $3^{rd}$ week of February, the highest survival percent was observed as 53.3%. If the date is early, another frost-pillar damage was occurred. If it's late, the damaged plant was perished with dry. In any case, we found improper transplanting caused the yield decrease. Therefore, we recommend the timely transplanting is the most important way for the prevention of frost-pillar damage in the onion cultivation.

  • The incidence and occurrence of virus infecting paprika (Capsicum annuum var. grossum) in Jeonnam province, the main areas of cultivation in Korea is undetermined. In this study, a total of 1,020 samples with virus-like symptoms were collected in Jeonnam province during summer season for 3 consecutive years (2002-2005) and were tested using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results showed that Pepper mottle virus (PepMoV), Broad bean wilt virus (BBWV), and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) were found to be the most prevalent viruses with a 3-year average percent incidence of 41.3, 19.8, and 4.4 respectively. Mixed infection with more than two viruses was also found with 3.5%, 17.0%, and 8.3%, respectively. Symptoms of these virus diseases were not evident at the seedling stage but slowly appeared at the transplanting stage and increased to the middle stage (4-5 months after transplanting) during the 3-year cultivation periods. Symptom appearance of infected plants however varied largely with transplanting time. Those plants transplanted from November to January were found to be infected with viruses in June, whereas symptoms appeared with in a month those plants transplanted from June to August. There were differences in the virus incidence from primary factor such as district, type of green house and variety, but these were not statistically significant (data not shown). Recommended control measures of paprika against these viruses is also discussed in this paper.
