  • The seismic records of the main shock and two after shocks of the Yeongwol Earthquake are studied based on the phsase analysis. The travel time curves with 12 different possible phases are constructed to analysis the phases of the records. which were provided by KIGAM seismic network. The results of phase analysis show that 1) The main shock (Ms=4.5) shows clear Pn phase but two after shocks (Ms=4 and Ms=2.5) do not show Pn phase. 2) The Pg or PmP phases look as first arrival phase in the after shock records whose edicental distance is smaller or larger than 150 km. 3) It is very difficult to identity the phases related to the Conrad discontinuity even if the Conrad discontiuity arrival exists. 4) The record of GRE station located outside of the Kueongsan Basin shows different arrival time of Pn phase, P-S duration time and frequency compared with those of the other stations located within the Kyeongsan Basin.

  • This study presents a detection method for mechanically fabricated defects on underwater steel pipes, using ultrasonic guided waves. Three different diameters (60, 90, and 114 mm) of 1000-mm long steel pipes were considered, along with several experimental design factors such as incident angles, incident distances, and the degrees of defects, to investigate how these factors affected the experimental results - the detectability of the mechanical defects. From the experimental results, we determined that the amplitude and arrival time of the first received wave signals gave a promising clue for distinguishing the existence of the defects and their severities. Between the amplitude and arrival time, the arrival time gave a more promising indication since it was affected by the experimental factors in a constant manner. Therefore, it was shown that the use of ultrasonic guided waves for underwater pipe inspection is feasible.

  • This paper introduces a new framework of predicting the arrival time of an aircraft by incorporating the probabilistic information of what type of trajectory pattern will be applied by human air traffic controllers. The proposed method is based on identifying the major patterns of vectored trajectories and finding the statistical relationship of those patterns with various traffic complexity factors. The proposed method is applied to the traffic scenarios in real operations to demonstrate its performances.

  • We have developed an algorithm for tracking coronal mass ejection (CME) propagation that allows us to estimate CME speed and its arrival time at Earth. The algorithm may be used either to forecast the CME's arrival on the day of the forecast or to update the CME tracking information for the next day's forecast. In our case study, we successfully tracked CME propagation using the algorithm based on g-values of interplanetary scintillation (IPS) observation provided by the Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research (ISEE). We were able to forecast the arrival time (Δt = 0.30 h) and speed (Δv = 20 km/s) of a CME event on October 2, 2000. From the CME-interplanetary CME (ICME) pairs provided by Cane & Richardson (2003), we selected 50 events to evaluate the algorithm's forecast capability. Average errors for arrival time and speed were 11.14 h and 310 km/s, respectively. Results demonstrated that g-values obtained continuously from any single station observation were able to be used as a proxy for CME speed. Therefore, our algorithm may give stable daily forecasts of CME position and speed during propagation in the region of 0.2-1 AU using the IPS g-values, even if IPS velocity observations are insufficient. We expect that this algorithm may be widely accepted for use in space weather forecasting in the near future.

  • In this work we use the mode decomposition technique employing chirplet transform, which is able to separate the individual modes from dispersive and multimodal waveform measured with the magnetostrictive sensor. The mode decomposition technique is also used to estimate the time-frequency centers and individual energies of the reflection, which would be used to locate and characterize axial defects. The arrival times of the separated modes are calculated and the axial defect lengths can be evaluated by using the estimated arrival time. Results from an experiment on a carbon steel pipe are presented and it is shown that the accurate and quantitative defect characterization could become enabled using the proposed technique.

  • This paper proposes a wireless positioning method using the CDMA mobile communicaton network. The proposed method is time-based positioning method that uses mobile-station arrival time of forward link signal from base-stations. In this mehtod there are TDOA and TOA methods that use time-difference-of-arrival and time-of-arrival, respectively. Error characteristics and implementation simplicity of the two methods are compared and analyzed each other. As a results, it showed that TDOA has advantage of less sensitivity to the time error compared to TOA but has disadantage of more sensitivity to the spatial error. Also, from architecture of the CDMA system that is time synchronized to only active base-station it is analyzed that adoption of TDOA method is more advantageous than TOA because time difference of signal arrival from the neighbor base-stations against the active base-station can be measured more easily. Therefore, conclusion is made that TDOA is beat suit to the time-based positioning method for the present CDMA mobile communication networkgorithm performs block-by-block coherent decoding with the aid of pilot symbols. It is shown that the complexity of the algorithm grows linearly as a function of sequence length. The performance of the algorithm is shown to better than that of the conventional pilot symbol aided (PSI) algorithm. Simulation results are presented to assess the performance of the algorithm and the results are compared with that of the conventional PSI alforithm.

  • By using the arrival time approach of Chae et at. [6], we derive various performance measures including the queue length distributions (in PGFs) and the waiting time distributions (in LST and PGF) for both M$^{x}$ /G/1 and Geo$^{x}$ /G/1 queueing systems, both under the assumption that the server, when it becomes idle, takes multiple vacations up to a random maximum number. This is an extension of both Choudhury[7] and Zhang and Tian [11]. A few mistakes in Zhang and Tian are corrected and meaningful interpretations are supplemented.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate concrete flaw using seismic first arrival and various inversion method. Seismic wave propagation was calculated using finite element method in theoretical modelling and tomogram was made using various inversion methods in theoretical and experimental modelling. Five steps of seismic first arrival were selected from FEM results and these data were used to calculate seismic velocity section. According to the results, exact seismic first arrival picking method was proposed and experimental modelling was conducted.

  • An underwater platform operating a passive sonar needs to acquire the target position to perform its mission. In an environment where sea-floor reflections exist, the position of a target can be estimated using the difference in the arrival time between the signals received through multipaths. In this paper, a method of localization for passive sonar is introduced, based on the EKF (Extended Kalman Filter) using the multipath time difference of arrival in underwater environments. TMA (Target Motion Analysis) requires accumulated measurements for long periods and has limitations on own-ship movement, allowing it to be used only in certain situations. The proposed method uses an EKF, which takes measurements of the time differences of the signal arrival in multipath environments. The method allows for target localization without restrictions on own-ship movement or the need for an observation time. To analyze the performance of the proposed method, simulation according to the distance and depth of the target was performed repeatedly, and the localization error according to the distance and water depth were analyzed. In addition, the correlation with the estimated position error was assessed by analyzing the arrival time difference according to the water depth.

Multimedia traffic is modeled as a traffic, which is composed of poisson distribution traffic and burst traffic with exponential/geometric ON time duration(Burst duration) Performance of traffic which is modeled as a multimedia traffic is analysed and buffer size, can provide the high quality service, is presented for the cell loss probability. It is simulated using event scheduling approach method which is provided by simulation package, PC SIMSCRIPT II.5. Simulation program is composed of PREAMBLE, MAIN, INITIAL, ARRIVAL, DEPARTURE and STOP·SIM modules. Specially, in case of mixed traffic simulation, ARRIVAL module is composed of ARRIVAL I and ARRIVAL II, and cells are generated independently by each module.
