Unveiling the dynamics of stunting: a qualitative exploration of parenting patterns and toddlers aged 6-59 months in Bejiharjo, Indonesia

  • Purpose: This research was conducted to explore the experience of mothers in raising stunted toddlers aged between 6-59 months. It also examined the perceptions of parenting styles shaped by socio-cultural contexts and time constraints affecting the nutritional status as well as growth in Bejiharjo Village, Java, Indonesia. Methods: A qualitative method was used and data were collected through in-depth interviews, diary recording, and focus group discussions with mothers of toddlers, stakeholders, and healthcare professionals. Transcript data from recorded interviews were processed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The results showed that there were four emergent themes, namely "Toddler parenting patterns," "Family and environmental health," "Eating patterns and consumption habits of toddlers," as well as "Literacy and understanding of parenting and child health." Furthermore, eight related theme clusters were yielded from the analysis of parenting experiences. Differences between stunted and non-stunted toddlers in parenting patterns and daily activities were recorded. Interactions between toddlers and mothers as well as productive activities had a shorter average duration. Conclusion: Mothers experience various challenges and limitations in raising toddlers with the risk of stunting. Therefore, increasing understanding and knowledge about the importance of healthy parenting and good nutrition are necessary to prevent stunting.

Space-time cluster research of R&D industry in Seoul, Korea (서울시 R&D 산업체의 시공간 클러스터 분석)

  • According to IASB(International Accounting Standards Board), R&D(Research and Development) is defined as a tertiary sector industry combining research and development. Many studies investigated R&D industry clusters in the form of high-tech cluster(Coe et al., 2007). However, these studies only generalized various spatial cluster of R&D industries. In particular, the studies could not considers cluster formation process over time lacking statistical significance in space-time perspectives. This study, therefore, indicates the limitation of recent R&D cluster literature which only considers either time or space. In addition, this study explores space-time clusters in R&D industry together with textile and cloth industry for comparison. Discovering the existence and location of clusters, this study utilized space-time K function and space-time scan statistics. The result shows that R&D industry presents significant clusters only in spatial dimension. No significant clusters were found in space-time dimension. However, textile and clothing industry presents significant clusters in both spatial and space-time dimensions.

  • In a coastal area, a plenty of research has adopted remotely sensed data. This is because longterm interaction between land and ocean makes continuous geographical changes in a broad extent and unaccessible areas. However, conventional remote sensing platforms such as satellite or airplane has several disadvantages including limited temporal resolution and high operational costs. Hence, this study uses a UAV system to detect a coastline and its movement. Result of coastline detection shows how the coastline moves in a day. Time-series coastlines were derived from UAV aerial images through digital image processing. There is a drawback in the stability of UAV compared to the conventional remote sensing platform, but the advantage appears on the economical efficiency. Since the latest studies shows an improvement of UAV for a variety of purposes in many fields, a UAV can also be utilized for regional study and spatial data acquisition platform. geography can also utilize a UAV as a spatial data acquisition platform for regional study.

  • Conventional treatments of war diffusion focus extensively on dyadic relationships, whose impact is thought to be immutable over the course of the conf lict. This study indicates that such conceptions are at best incomplete, and more likely misleading to explain the spatial diffusion of wars. Using social network analysis, we examine war joining behavior during World War I. By employing social network analysis, we attempted to overcome the dichotomous understanding of geography as space and network in the discipline of conflict studies. Empirically, networked structural elements of state relationships (e.g., rivalry, alliances) have explanatory and predictive value that must be included alongside dyadic considerations in analyzing war joining behavior. In addition, our analysis demonstrates that the diffusion of conflict involves different driving forces over time.

  • The purpose of this study is to search for a rationale of world geography curriculum. Elementary school children tend to get impressionistic and distorted information about other countries through snapshot TV programs. But they need to get more balanced understanding about them from the perspective of each country. Children's judgment about other countries, favorable or unfavorable, tends to be emotional, based on the first-order conditions of life in those regions, such as atmosphere, food, and habitat, and the symbolics of the place. But their systematic understanding about the relationship between their own life and the life of other locations or countries tends to be meager. It seems to be partly due to the practice of co-centric curricular construction. The geography curriculum may have to be in relation to other countries, from the regional geography of the third grade on.

  • Based on the study of the lineage groups around Gyeongju City and the migrants from North Korea, it is recognized that any one of Korean group identities has not been naturally formed over a long time, but socially constructed. One of the project for the Korean human geography orienting toward Korean Studies is to examine, from the place perspective, the complicated and contested identities that modern Koreans are today sharing individually as well as in a group. From such an examination. it can explore specifically the future shape of the Korean identity upon which everybody can agree. To make the project successful, Korean Human Geography needs to start from the study of a specific place that would expose the triangular relations among the three elements: identity, place, ideology or power.

  • This paper analyzes the drought and restriction on water supply in Taebaek City during the winter season in 2008 using Actor-Network Theory. Actor-Network Theory emphasizes and brings into view the role and act of non-human actors as well as human actors in various environmental issues. The fact that only Taebaek experienced restriction on water supply for 88 days although the winter season drought in 2008 affected the whole nation, requires a synthetic analysis of both human and non-human actors and their relationships and networks embedded in Taebaek City at that time. This paper shows that both human and non-human actors including Taebaek City Hall, Korea Water Resource Corporation, Taebaek citizen, the water supply facilities, Gwangdongdam, obsolete water pipes, the topography of Taebaek, soil, the change of industry, and population interact one another transforming the geography of water in Taebaek. This study helps to understand the complex processes related to drought disasters at a specific local scale and to provide appropriate measures to drought.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide a basic theory of photogeography. There is a close relationship between photos and fine arts, but lots of differences. For examples photos are arts of cognition, analytic media and time. Geographic photos are photos useful for geography. Geographic-photos are a kinds of academic photos which deals with special meaning of geographic phenomena and cognition of the certain area. According to the nature the photos available for geography, can be grouped into geographic photos and general photos. Geographical ideas, photographical skills and artistic senses are necessary to the photogeographers. Geographic photos are useful for research and educational Purpose. The aspect of research is related to the systematic geography, for example ; geomorphology, historical geography etc. In conclusion, to the photo geographer the geographic idea is more necessary than the skill of photography.

Geomorphic Development of Gnamma at the Summit Area of Mt. Geum, Sangju-ri, Namhae-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do (남해군 금산 정상부의 나마(Gnamma) 지형발달)

  • The types of gnamma at the summit area of Mt. Geum, Sangju-ri, Namhae-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do are classified and geomorphic developments are investigated. The rocks facing the coast show high distributional density of gnamma due to the salt supply from the coast. The water content rate of gnamma distributed in flat rocks at the summit is highest in the bottom area and lowest in the outside area. Moreover, the quartz grains are fallen due to the weathering of feldspar in the crystalline rocks such as granites and the gnamma are merged and expanded as they develop. The average weathering rate of gnamma is 0.04mm/y and it slowed with time. The results on rate indicate that the gnamma are formed and developed at the present rather than the fossil landform or by subsurface weathering.

Geomorphic development and distributional system of marine terrace in the eastern part of Seopo-myeon, Sacheon-si, Gyeongnam Province (경남 사천시 서포면 동쪽 해안단구 지형 발달과 분포 체계)

  • The eastern coast of Seopo-myeon, Sancheon-si in the South Coast is a bay almost completely separated from open sea by Changseon and Namhae Islands. Marine terraces in this area can be classified into geomorphic surfaces with elevations of 10~12m, 15~18m, 20~24m, 25~28m, 30~33m, 35~38m, 40~45m, 45~50m and 54m. This marine terrace system is similar to the Boryeong area in the West Coast. The geomorphic surfaces distribute along ridges and show relatively small areas. The young and old surfaces show a mixed distributional pattern. This distributional pattern contrasts to the East Coast where the oldest surface farthest from the coastline is parallel to the coast and age of the surfaces increases with a distance from the coast. These seem to result in high energy waves by typhoon that developed wave-cut platform on hill areas with relatively complex relief in a short time.
