  • Nonplanar surface geometries of components are frequently encountered in real ultrasonic inspection situations. Use of rigid array transducers can lead to beam defocusing and reduction of defect image quality due to the mismatch between the planar array and the changing surface. When a flexible array is used to fit the complex surface profile, the locations of array elements should be known to compute the delay time necessary for adaptive heam focusing. An alternative method is to employ the time reversal focusing technique that does not require a prior knowledge about the properties and structures of the specimen and the transducer. In this paper, a time reversal method is applied to simulate beam focusing of flexible arrays and imaging of point-like defects contained in specimens with nonplanar surface geometry. Quantitative comparisons are made for the performance of a number of array techniques in terms of the ability to focus and image three point-like reflectors positioned at regular intervals. The sinusoidal profile array studied here exhibits almost the same image quality as the flat, reference case.

  • Historically, IP-based internets have been able to provide a simple best-effort delivery service to all applications they carry. Best effort treats all packets equally, with no service level, packet loss, and delay. But the needs of users have changed. The want to use the new real-time, multimedia, and multicasting applications. Thus, there is a strong need to be able to support a variety of traffic with a variety of quality-of-service requirements. The DiffServ architecture, proposed by the Internet Engineering Task Force(IETF), has become the most viable solution for provising QoS over IP networks. The DiffServ architecture does not specify any handling method between AF out-profile packets and BE packets. This paper propose a mechanism for supporting inter class fairness in the DiffServ architecture. Ⅰ proposed a modified Weighted Round Robin method to protect the BE traffic from AF out-profile packets in the core routers. The proposed technique is evaluated through simulation. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method provides better protection not only for BE packets from AF out-profile packets, but also for the AF in-profile packets in congested networks.

  • In this paper, the measuring method of underwater acoustic communication channel characteristics in the shallow water using the autocorrelation characteristic of PN sequence and the undorwater communication channel analysis results from the received signal sample data are described. For measuring the underwater acoustic communication channel characteristics, two PN sequences are used as a transmitted data of I-channel and Q-channel of QPSK symbol and QPSK signal is transmitted with symbol rate of 5 kHz and carrier frequency of 25 kHz. In the receiver the received signal, which pass through 675 m and 1492 m, is sampled and then stored. Using the stored sample data, the scattering function, coherent time, delay power profile, spaced-tone autocorrelation function, delay spread, and coherent bandwidth of each propagation distance cases are analyzed. Based on the analysis results, several guidelines are suggested for the design and implementation of underwater transmission system.

  • The combustion characteristics of a mixture of acetaldehyde, oxygen and argon behind a reflected shock wave at temperatures ranging from 1320 to 1897 K at 100 torr were studied. The emission from the OH radical at 306.4 nm and the pressure profile behind the reflected shock were measured to monitor ignition delay time. The ignition delay times were computed from a proposed mechanism of 110 elementary reactions involving 34 species. The simulation and sensitivity analysis confirm that the main channel for oxidation of acetaldehyde at high temperature consists of the Rice-herzfeld mechanism, the decomposition and oxidation of HCO, and the reaction of H with $O_2$.

  • Municipal and sanitary landfills can pose environmental problems due to leachate, landfill gas md unstable geotechnical properties. Most governmental bodies delay the correction of landfill problems or landfill replacement until a crises stage is reached. The replacement of a landfill is often made difficult due to costly regulatory controls, public opposition to siting and the high cost of closure for the previous landfill unit. Solutions to extending landfill life and capacity Involve waste minimization by recycling, refuse compaction and waste-to-energy incineration. Incineration can reduce the volume of refuse by 50-95%. The largest installed bases of municipal waste Incinerators are located in Japan and the U.S. The volume of waste contained in a landfill can be estimated by load count tabulations, weight-and-volume measurements or a material balance analysis based on the trash profile of user categories. for an existing landfill, core samples may be collected and analyzed for use in a material balance analysis. Newly generated refuse contains approximately 50% of the heating value of coal. However, landfill properties vary significantly due to the waste profile of the contributors and biodegradation due to time and weathering. The volume of the Nanji-do landfill

  • The purpose of this study was to compare premotor time(PMT) and electro-mechanical delay(EMD) between sitting and standing posture. Twenty four healthy young subjects(12 women and 12 men) participated in this study. Subjects were instructed to perform maximal, voluntary, isometric contraction of ankle muscle(tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscles) in reaction to auditory stimulus. PMT and EMD, calculated from stimulus, EMG and torque profile were compared between sitting and standing postures. As statistical analysis, paired t-test was performed to assess difference between sitting and standing posture. In both tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscles, EMD was found to be significantly longer for standing than sitting. However, PMT in standing posture was longer than that in sitting posture only in gastrocnemius muscles. These result indicate that increased reaction time, particularly, increased EMD of ankle muscles in standing posture may be caused by co-contraction of ankle muscles for postural control in standing posture.

  • In this paper, the channel capacity of a specified wireless indoor multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) channel is estimated by analyzing spatial characteristics of this channel using the three-dimensional ray tracing method, and a technique for deriving an optimized separation of multi-antenna elements is proposed. At first, the ray paths, the path losses, and the time-delay profile are computed using the three-dimensional ray tracing method in an indoor corridor environment, which has the line of sight(LOS) and non-line of sight(NLOS) regions. The ray tracing method is verified by a comparison between the computation results and the measurements which are obtained with dipole antennas, an amplifier and a network analyzer. Then, an MIMO system is positioned in the indoor channel environment and the ray paths and path losses are computed for four antenna-position combinations and various values of the antenna separation to obtain the channel capacity for the MIMO system. An optimum antenna-separation is derived by averaging the channel capacities of 100 receiver positions with four different antenna combinations.

  • A phased array is a multi-element piezoelectric device whose elements are individually excited by electric pulses at programmed delay time. One of the advantages of using phased array in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) application over conventional ultrasonic transducers is their great maneuverability of ultrasonic beam. There are some parameters such as the number and the size of the piezoelectric elements and the inter-element spacing of the elements to design phased array transducer. In this study, the characteristic of ultrasonic beam for phased array transducer due to the variation of the number of elements has been simulated for ultrasonic SH-wave on the basis of Huygen's principle. Ultrasonic beam directivity and focusing due to the change of time delay of each element were discussed due to the change of the number of piezoelectric elements. It was found that ultrasonic beam was much more spreaded and hence its sound pressure was decreased as steering angle of ultrasonic beam was increased. In addition, the ability of ultrasonic bean focusing decreased gradually with the increase of focal length at the same piezoelectric elements. However, the ability of beam focusing was improved as the number of consisting elements was increased.

  • This study was carried out near the waters of Jango port, Dangjin-gun, Chungcheongnam-do by utilizing 10kHz carrier frequency, for the purpose of measurement and analysis of underwater channel environment of the Western sea. For the measurement of horizontal channel environment, the separation distance between transmitter and receiver is made differently in the range between 10m and 4000m. Meanwhile, for the measurement of vertical channel environment, transmission and receiving side ships are fixed as contacted each other and measured differently depending on their depth of submergence. In this study, the Coherence Bandwidth and the Coherence Time were estimated by analyzing the Power delay profile of the real sea based on the measured data, and analyzing the doppler frequency through frequency conversion of received tone-signal, respectively. This study is expected to become a base study in carrying out the frame design for underwater communication to improve the communication and secure the reliability of communication in future underwater channel environment.

  • In this study, the newly constructed optical measurement system, which was mainly composed of a parametric tunable laser and a near infrared photoelectric multiplier, was introduced to clarify the optical characteristics of wood as discontinuous body with anisotropic cellular structure from the viewpoint of the time-of-flight near infrared spectroscopy (TOF-NIRS). The combined effects of the cellular structure of wood sample, the wavelength of the laser beam λ, and the detection position of transmitted light on the time resolved profiles were investigated in detail. The variation of the attenuance of peak maxima At, the time delay of peak maxima Δt and the variation of full width at half maximum Δw were strongly dependent on the feature of cellular structure of a sample and the wavelength of the laser beam. The substantial optical path length became about 30 to 35 times as long as sample thickness except the absorption band of water. Δt ${\times}$ Δw representing the light scattering condition increased exponentially with the sample thickness or the distance between the irradiation point and the end of sample. Around the λ=900-950 nm, there may be considerable light scattering in the lumen of tracheid, which is multiple specular reflection and easy to propagate along the length of wood fiber. Such tendency was remarkable for soft wood with the aggregate of thin layers of cell walls. When we apply TOF-NIRS to the cellular structural materials like wood, it is very important to give attention to the difference in the light scattering within cell wall and the multiple specular-like reflections between cell walls. We tried to express the characteristics of the time resolved profile on the basis of the optical parameters for light propagation determined by the previous studies, which were absorption coefficient K and scattering coefficient S from Kubelka-Munk theory and n from nth power cosine model of radiant intensity. The wavelength dependency of the product of K/S and n, which expressed the light-absorbing and -scattering condition and the degree of anisotropy, respectively, was similar to that of the time delay of peak maxima Δt. The variation of the time resolved profile is governed by the combination of these parameters. So, we can easily find the set of parameters for light propagation synthetically from Δt.
