  • In this paper, we have proposed the hardware architecture which implements the algorithm for retaining the connectivity which prevents the disconnection in the gray-scale image thinning. To extract the skeleton from the image in a real time, it is necessary to examine the connectivity of the skeleton in a real time. The proposed architecture finds the connectivity number in the 4-clock period. The architecture consists of three blocks, PS(Parallel to Serial) Converter and Stare Generator and Ridge Checker. The PS Converter changes the 3$\times$3 gray level image to four sets of image pixels. The State Generator examines the connectivity of the central pixel by searching the data from the PS Converter. The Ridge Checker determines whether the central pixel is on the skeleton or not. The proposed architecture finds the connectivity of the central pixel in a 3$\times$3 gray level image in the 4-clocks. The total circuits are verified by the design tools and operate correctly.

  • Panoramic image is one of the technologies that are commonly used today. However, technical difficulties still exist in panoramic video production. Without a special camera such as a 360-degree camera, making panoramic video becomes more difficult. In order to make a panoramic video, it is necessary to synchronize the timeline of multiple videos shot at multiple locations. However, the timeline synchronization method using the internal clock of the camera may cause an error due to the difference of the internal hardware. In order to solve this problem, timeline synchronization between multiple videos using visual information or auditory information has been studied. However, there is a problem in accuracy and processing time when using video information, and there is a problem in that, when using audio information, there is no synchronization when there is sensitivity to noise or there is no melody. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a timeline synchronization method between multiple video using audio waveform. It shows higher synchronization accuracy and temporal efficiency than the video information based time synchronization method.

  • Background Gynecomastia is a common condition that can cause severe emotional and physical distress in both young and older men. Patients in whom symptomatic recalcitrant gynecomastia persists for a long time are potential candidates for surgery. Methods From January 2014 to January 2016, 15 patients underwent correction of gynecomastia through a single 3-mm incision at our institution. Only patients with true gynecomastia underwent surgery with this new technique. Through the small incision, sharp dissection was performed in a clockwise and counterclockwise direction describing two half-circles. Health-related quality of life and aesthetic outcomes were evaluated using a modified version of the Breast Evaluation Questionnaire (BEQ). Results The patients' average age was 23.5 years (range, 18-28 years), and their average body mass index was $23.2kg/m^2$ (range, $19.2-25.3kg/m^2$). One case was unilateral and 14 cases were bilateral. The weight of glandular tissue resected from each breast ranged from 80 to 170 g. No excess skin was excised. Bleeding was minimal. The mean operating time was 25 minutes (range, 21-40 minutes). No complications were recorded. All lesions were histologically benign. The patients' average score was 3.5 (on a 5-point Likert scale) in all domains of the BEQ for themselves and their partners. Conclusions In this study, we demonstrated the safety and reliability of a new technique that allows mastectomy through an imperceptible 3-mm incision. We obtained high patient satisfaction scores using our surgical technique, and patients reported considerable improvement in their social, physical, and psychological well-being after surgery.

  • Recently, an efficient hardware development for a cryptosystem is concerned. The efficiency of a multiplier for GF($2^n$)is directly related to the efficiency of some cryptosystem. This paper, considering the trade-off between time complexity andsize complexity, proposes a new multiplier architecture having n[n/2] AND gates and n([n/2]+1)- $$\Delta$_n$ = XOR gates, where $$\Delta$_n$=1 if n is even, $$\Delta$_n$=0 otherwise. This size complexity is less than that of existing ${multipliers}^{[5][12]}$which are $n^2$ AND gates and $n^2$-1 XOR gates. While a new multiplier is a serial-parallel multiplier to output a result of multiplication of two elements of GF($2^n$) after 2 clock cycles, the suggested multiplier is more suitable for some cryptographic device having space limitations.

  • Practical models for FPGA architectures which include performance- and/or density-enhancing components such as carry chains, wide function multiplexers, and memory/multiplier blocks are being applied to academic FPGA placement tools which used to rely on simple imaginary models. Previously the techniques such as pre-packing and multi-layer density analysis are proposed to remedy issues related to such practical models, and the wire length is effectively minimized during initial analytic placement. Since timing should be optimized rather than wire length, most previous work takes into account the timing constraints. However, instead of the initial analytic placement, the timing-driven techniques are mostly applied to subsequent steps such as placement legalization and iterative improvement. This paper incorporates the timing driven techniques, which check if the placement meets the timing constraints given in the standard SDC format, and minimize the detected violations, with the existing analytic placer which implements pre-packing and multi-layer density analysis. First of all, a static timing analyzer has been used to check the timing of the wire-length minimized placement results. In order to minimize the detected violations, a function to minimize the largest arrival time at end points is added to the objective function of the analytic placer. Since each clock has a different period, the function is proposed to be evaluated for each clock, and added to the objective function. Since this function can unnecessarily reduce the unviolated paths, a new function which calculates and minimizes the largest negative slack at end points is also proposed, and compared. Since the existing legalization which is non-timing driven is used before the timing analysis, any improvement on timing is entirely due to the functions added to the objective function. The experiments on twelve industrial examples show that the minimum arrival time function improves the worst negative slack by 15% on average whereas the minimum worst negative slack function improves the negative slacks by additional 6% on average.

  • Most deciduous trees in temperate zone are dormant during the winter to overcome cold and dry environment. Dormancy of deciduous fruit trees is usually separated into a period of rest by physiological conditions and a period of quiescence by unfavorable environmental conditions. Inconsistent and fewer budburst in pear orchards has been reported recently in South Korea and Japan and the insufficient chilling due to warmer winters is suspected to play a role. An accurate prediction of the flowering time under the climate change scenarios may be critical to the planning of adaptation strategy for the pear industry in the future. However, existing methods for the prediction of budburst depend on the spring temperature, neglecting potential effects of warmer winters on the rest release and subsequent budburst. We adapted a dormancy clock model which uses daily temperature data to calculate the thermal time for simulating winter phenology of deciduous trees and tested the feasibility of this model in predicting budburst and flowering of Niitaka pear, one of the favorite cultivars in Korea. In order to derive the model parameter values suitable for Niitaka, the mean time for the rest release was estimated by observing budburst of field collected twigs in a controlled environment. The thermal time (in chill-days) was calculated and accumulated by a predefined temperature range from fall harvest until the chilling requirement (maximum accumulated chill-days in a negative number) is met. The chilling requirement is then offset by anti-chill days (in positive numbers) until the accumulated chill-days become null, which is assumed to be the budburst date. Calculations were repeated with arbitrary threshold temperatures from $4^{\circ}C$ to $10^{\circ}C$ (at an interval of 0.1), and a set of threshold temperature and chilling requirement was selected when the estimated budburst date coincides with the field observation. A heating requirement (in accumulation of anti-chill days since budburst) for flowering was also determined from an experiment based on historical observations. The dormancy clock model optimized with the selected parameter values was used to predict flowering of Niitaka pear grown in Suwon for the recent 9 years. The predicted dates for full bloom were within the range of the observed dates with 1.9 days of root mean square error.

  • In this paper, we peformed the real-time implementation of AMR(Adaptive Multi-Rate) speech coding algorithm which is adopted for IMT-2000 service using TMS320C6201, i.e., a Texas Instrument´s fixed-point DSP. With the ANSI C source code released from ETSI, optimization is performed to make it run in real-time with memory as small as possible using the C compiler and assembly language. Implemented AMR speech codec has the size of 32.06 kWords program memory, 9.75 kWords data RAM memory, and 19.89 kWords data ROM memory. And, The time required for processing one frame of 20 ms length speech data is about 4.38 ms, and it is short enough for real-time operation. It is verified that the decoded result of the implemented speech codec on the DSP is identical with the PC simulation result using ANSI C code for test sequences. Also, actual sound input/output test using microphone and speaker demonstrates its proper real-time operation without distortions or delays.

  • This paper introduces the development of global fringe search (GFS) software for preprocessing of Daejeon Correlator. In case of the VLBI observation, a observer conducts the observation for the reference sources with strong and point-like radio stars on schedule in order to confirm the well-observedness of the radio source by the radio telescope. The correlator performs the correlation for the reference sources to detect the fringe completely. We developed the GFS software by calculating the precise delay time between each observatory based on specific observatory. Then, this software calculates the precise delay time by using the delay model (correlator model) of reference source and information of time offset between the Hydrogen Maser frequency standard and GPS (Global Positioning System) clock located in each observatory through the correlation preprocessing. In order to confirm the performance of the developed software, experiments were carried out for the reference sources and target sources observed by the KaVA (KVN and VERA Array). Experimental results show that the GFS software has effectively good performance by finding the precise delay time offset according to the comparison between the compensated delay time offset and one without compensation.

  • Alternative cropping systems would be one of climate change adaptation options. Suitable areas for a crop could be identified using a climate suitability model. The EcoCrop model has been used to assess climate suitability of crops using monthly climate surfaces, e.g., the digital climate map at high spatial resolution. Still, a high-performance computing approach would be needed for assessment of climate suitability to take into account a complex terrain in Korea, which requires considerably large climate data sets. The objectives of this study were to implement a script for R, which is an open source statistics analysis platform, in order to use the EcoCrop model under a parallel computing environment and to assess climate suitability of maize using digital climate maps at high spatial resolution, e.g., 1 km. The total running time reduced as the number of CPU (Central Processing Unit) core increased although the speedup with increasing number of CPU cores was not linear. For example, the wall clock time for assessing climate suitability index at 1 km spatial resolution reduced by 90% with 16 CPU cores. However, it took about 1.5 time to compute climate suitability index compared with a theoretical time for the given number of CPU. Implementation of climate suitability assessment system based on the MPI (Message Passing Interface) would allow support for the digital climate map at ultra-high spatial resolution, e.g., 30m, which would help site-specific design of cropping system for climate change adaptation.

  • In this paper, a new hardware and software architecture for a stereo vision processing system including rectification, disparity estimation, and visualization was developed. The developed method, named LArge scale stereo matching method using Support Point Interpolation (LASPI), shows excellence in real-time processing for obtaining dense disparity maps from high quality image regions that contain high density support points. In the real-time processing of high definition (HD) images, LASPI does not degrade the quality level of disparity maps compared to existing stereo-matching methods such as Efficient LArge-scale Stereo matching (ELAS). LASPI has been designed to meet a high frame-rate, accurate distance resolution performance, and a low resource usage even in a limited resource environment. These characteristics enable LASPI to be deployed to safety-critical applications such as an obstacle recognition system and distance detection system for autonomous vehicles. A Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) for the LASPI algorithm has been implemented in order to support parallel processing and 4-stage pipelining. From various experiments, it was verified that the developed FPGA system (Xilinx Virtex-7 FPGA, 148.5MHz Clock) is capable of processing 30 HD ($1280{\times}720pixels$) frames per second in real-time while it generates disparity maps that are applicable to real vehicles.
