As compared with existing center-boring timber, skin timber which be hollowed out of its considerable inner parts has some merits as like short drying time, less developed checks during drying, a advantage of lower MC (8~%), more easy injection of chemicals, a possibility of using as a lighter structural heavy timber including Hanok and heavy timber construction, a possibility for the various living necessaries and furniture materials. However, development of hybrid skin timber is required for using as a value-added materials and giving a confidence for the structural safety of skin timber to general user. Thus, improved pine skin timber (IPST) and improved larch skin timber (ILST) were manufactured using the lighter steel plate possible. And compressive capacity of improved skin timber was analyzed. From the results of this study, the following conclusions have been made: 1. Both of IPST and ILST can give a uniformity of material capacity compared with non-treated skin timber. 2. Both IPST and ILST, there was not statistical significancy among the thickness of steel plate. Therefore, it concluded that it was not necessary to use thicker steel plate. 3. There was also not statistical significancy between IPSR and ILST, so it need not to be selective about the species of improved skin timber. 4. IPST showed various failure types, but most failure types of ILST is a splitting type.
Structural larger timber have some weak points as like much longer drying time at lower MC(15%), a considerable check developing and the difficulty for the chemicals injection, so it is necessary to develop lighter structural size member for using the new Hanok, heavy timber construction, living necessaries, furniture and industrial goods. The developed skin timber can be a good raw material for those uses. Skin timber is a hollowed timber which be bored out of its considerable cross-sectional area. The intention of this study was the evaluation of compressive capacity of skin timber. Specially, skin timbers which have more than 200mm in sizes were used to analyze the compressive capacity. From the results of this study, the following conclusions have been made: 1. Though considerable inner parts were bored out, both pine skin timber and larch skin timber showed a good compressive capacity to that of non-bored solid timber. 2. According to ASTM, pine skin timber showed various failure types, but Splitting type, Brooming and end rolling type were main failure types for the larch skin timber. 3. Pine skin timber didn't show the significance between cylindrical shape and rectangular shape, but larch skin timber showed the significance between two shapes. Therefore, for the larch skin timber, cylindrical shape and rectangular shape should be used as a column uses and beam uses respectively. 4. Pine skin timber and larch skin timber didn't show the significance on the compressive capacity. There is not much difference of compressive capacity between them, so it can be possible to select on the user convenience.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the applicability of high temperature drying to pitch pine (Pinus rigida) lumber, especially intended for use as lamina of structural glued laminated timber (glulam), to enhance the efficient utilization and provide added-value to that species. The high temperature schedule and drying procedures utilized were shown to be reasonable for drying glulam lamina due to the occurrence of small moisture gradients, minimal residual drying stress, and low warpage. Through preliminary tests, it was confirmed that residual resin at lamina surfaces did not adversely affect the gluing process. However, quantitative analysis of resin is required for developing a method to constrain the occurrence of pitch trouble with respect to decreasing long-term adhesive and finish durability of glulam in use after manufacturing. The final moisture content of high temperature dried lamina was much lower than target moisture content and discoloration was more severe than anticipated. In a further study, it will be necessary to determine the optimal drying conditions, such as temperature, humidity, drying time, and top load restraint level, which could best control discoloration, warpage, and moisture content of the lamina, while minimizing fuel expense.

Characteristics of heating and drying of Canadian-imported Douglas-fir timber using microwave in order to secure convenience and quality of drying timber and to get basic data for secondary conservation treatment are as follows: As the results of analysis of change curves of internal temperature of the timber after irradiating it, round timber and board timber showed stable heat distribution, heat consumption and surface water-content in heating with 30kW for 30 minutes and 120 minutes and with 40kW for 3 minutes and 9 minutes, respectively. Especially, surface water-content distribution according to heating by microwave showed very even leveling and water-content decrease rate was also more 30% compared to its weight showing excellent dry efficiency. And in case of soaking timbers into liquid chemicals for secondary conservation according to the analysis results of heat consumption, it is expected that large amount of preservative will be permeated. Therefore, timber heated by microwave is remarkably available for using industrial materials and developing secondary utilized products with its fast water-content decrease and dryness and higher heat consumption.
Timber boardwalk decks are widely installed in parks and scenic areas to provide pedestrians an elevated footpath as well as harmony with the surrounding natural scene. In order to extend the lifespan of boardwalks in the outdoor environment, industrially treated pine timber, such as Pinus sylvestris, is often adopted. However, accidents of pedestrians injured by damaged boardwalk decks have been constantly reported. Therefore, the mechanical behavior of two different types of treated timber was examined in this study under repeated wetting and drying. An increasing number of radial cracks appeared with increasing length and width as more cycles were performed. A loss of more than 40% of the screw withdrawal capacity was observed in both end grain and face grain for the two types of timber after twelve accelerated wet-dry cycles, which coincides with the observation of damaged timber boardwalks in the field investigation. At the same time, it was found that both the compressive and the flexural strength was not sensitive to the wet-dry cycles especially at large cycle numbers.
The preservation has been conducted for wooden ship timber excavated from Bonghwang-Dong, Gimhae, Korea. The species were analyzed for conservation as pre-treatment. Outer panel was analyzed as Cinnamomum spp. and trapezoid wooden material, wooden wedge was Cryptomeria japonica D. Don.. Wooden ship timber have been treated by vacuum-freeze drying after impregnation with aqueous PEG#3,350 solution(almost 45%). The timber of Bonghwang-Dong ship is considered as Japanese ship that many data such as conformation of ship, location of site, japanese artifact of around site were confirmed. In addition, The ship timber give us the important information about the international trade with Japan.
This study was performed to identify the effect of end-coating around pith of heavy timbers of Red pine and Korean pine on high temperature and low humidity drying characteristics. Total drying times were 268 hours, and ranges of final moisture content was investigated that Red Pine 9.2% to 10.8% MC for square and round timber, in case of Korean Pine 15.0% to 22.0% MC for square timber, 12.8% to 20.4% MC for round timber. Moisture content distribution of Red Pine was a uniform, but part of high moisture content was found in Korean Pine. In case of Korean pine, the surface checks were occurred more severe than in case of Red pine, and end-coating treatment were investigated to be ineffective on surface check. The internal checks were only formed on the two timbers. The value of the case hardenings was investigated that the ranges 3.7% to 9.1% for Red pine. In case of Korean pine, on the other hand, the case hardenings presence a few as 20.9% to 35.8%.
The delamination along the annual ring on the cross-section of laminae and the bonding strength according to the tangential angle between laminae were evaluated for the production of 3-ply cross-laminated timber (CLT) using domestic larch. Since there is no standard for CLT in Korea, the production and test of specimens for bonding strength followed the standard procedure of "Structural glued laminated timber" (KS F 3021). The standard specifies to exclude any measurement from the cracks of timbers resulted from drying or knots during delamination test of the glued laminated timbers. However, the failure of cross-sectional tissues along the annual rings was observed near the glue-line of all specimens during the delamination test. Because this phenomenon can generate defects in the CLT that may be exposed to various temperatures and relative humidities after the actual construction, the delamination percentage was measured by including this wood failure. As a result, the delamination percentage of the CLT which had been combined in such a way that the annual rings of outer lamina were directed inward was the lowest, which was around 13%, regardless of the annual ring direction of the middle lamina. On the other hand, the delamination percentage of the CLT which had been combined in such a way that the annual rings of outer lamina were directed outward was the highest, which was around 26%. Furthermore, end-split occurred in the outer lamina during the drying process of the boiling delamination test, which affected the delamination percentage. Therefore, the soaking delamination test was found to be more appropriate for evaluating the delamination strength of CLT. The block shear strength of larch CLT was $3.9{\pm}0.9$ MPa on average, which was 46% lower than the block shear strength requirement (7.1 MPa) of the standard, but satisfied the criteria of the block shear strength (3.5 MPa) of the European Standard (prEN 16351: 2013).
This study was conducted to identify the effect of kerfing and incising pretreatments on high-temperature drying characteristics of cedar and larch boxed-heart timbers with a cross section of less than 150 mm. The result showed that the pretreatments have made a significant difference regarding surface check and shrinkage. Although the kerfing was suitable as a pretreatment to reduce the occurrence of surface check, the incising was not suitable as a pretreatment since the knives of timber joined together, causing the conversion to the surface checks. The shrinkage showed a significant result that the final moisture content was reduced in the order of incising, kerfing, and kerfing-incising after the drying process based on the pretreatment condition. Twist was more affected by the grain angle than the anisotropy of the juvenile wood, and there was no effect of pretreatments.
Collapse is an abnormal shrinkage resulting in uneven, rough surfaces and/or warping of sawn timber. The maximum abnormal shrinkages of the oak and persimmon specimens were obtained by the quasi-equilibrium drying and were compared with the other drying methods. The effect of steaming and freezing treatments on the shrinkage of wood was also investigated. The Quasi-equilibrium drying used in this study was proved as a good tool to make the maximum abnormal shrinkage of wood. The maximum abnormal volumetric shrinkage possibly caused by collapse could be 16.3% and 14.3% for the oak and persimmon specimens, respectively. In general the steaming-treated specimens shrank less than the controls for the oak specimens, but did more for the persimmon specimens. The volumetric shrinkages of the freezing-treated specimens were more various between the drying methods than those of the control and steaming-treated specimens.
