A continuous monitoring of sedimentation rate and textural characteristics of surface sediments was carried out on the tidal flats in Kwangyang Bay, middle South Sea for two years on an every-two-monthly basis. This study shows that during the winter the tidal flats receive a thin surface layer of which texture becomes finer. In summer, the surface sediments were subject to rather abrupt erosion by occational typhoons and heavy rainfall resulting in a coarse-silt dominated texture. Due to nearly closed geomorphology of Kwangyang Bay, local waves created in the bay during winter are much subdued, in contrast to the rough wave climate and associated sedimentary cycle for open-type tidal flats in the Yellow Sea. In addition, unexpected artificial effects on the tidal-flat sedimentation by construction of a huge industrial complex along the shoreline of the bay are observed from a nearby tidal flat. Here, the sediments were consistently eroded without any sign of natural seasonal variations.
This study was aimed to describe the population dynamics and secondary production of Tapes philppinarum on Chohwa and Toksan tidal flats in Kwangyang Bay, from June 1994 to July 1995. The size distributions in shell length showed bimodal patterns from June 1994 to April 1995. Thereafter the distribution changed to the passage of time, indicating an increase in shell length. The mean densities decreased gradually with month. Chohwa A sustained highestdensity, followed by Chohwa B, Toksan C, and Toksan D. The recruitment of new year class occurred first on the upper tidal flat, and then moved to the lower tidal flat. The mean biomass in flesh dry weight of each year class increased in spring just before the spawning period, and thereafter decreased progressively. Annual mean biomass wasrecorded as 170.7 g m$\^$-2/ at Chohwa A, 220.7 g m$\^$-2/ at Chohwa B, 21.8 g m$\^$-2/ at Toksan C, and 45.2 g m$\^$-2/ at toksan D. Annual productions of Ruditapes philippinarum were estimated as 259.72 g m$\^$-2/ yr$\_$-1/ at Chohwa A, 359.79 g m$\^$-2/ yr$\_$-1/ at Chohwa B, 45.02 g m$\^$-2/ yr$\_$-1/ at Toksan c, 68.88 g m$\^$-2/ yr$\_$-1/ at Toksan D. Annual productions were much higher on Chohwa tidal flat than those on Toksan tidal flat. While P:B ratio were higher on Toksan tidal flat as 1.70 than those on Chohwa tidal flat as 1.58. In conclusion, the Chohwa tidal flat showed higher biomass and producion of Ruditapes philippinarum, whereas the Toksan tidal flat showed higher P:B ratio. The total amount of potential food might influence on the density, biomass nad produciton, whereas the amount of food and space per individual might influence on the growth rate and P:B ratio.

To evaluate the influence of the external force components on the littoral currents in the Gusipo beach, Jeonbuk, West Coast of Korea where a wide tidal sand flat developed, a coupled hydrodynamic model considered real time tidal currents and wave-induced currents was constructed in which the EFDC for tides and tidal currents, the SWAN for waves and the SHORECIRC for wave-induced currents were used as the hindcasting models. A series of field observations for tides, tidal currents and incident waves were carried out and especially to observe the littoral currents in the tidal sand flat, the GPS mounted and light weight drogues were used. Also wind data were collected from the adjacent weather station. To analyze the littoral current components, the numerical drogue tracking results considered real time winds, tides and waves were compared with the field drogue data. The drift speed of numerical drogues was reproduced as the range of 68.0~105.2% compared with the field data and the velocity error of main direction component showed a good result as -16.7~10.0%. As a result, in the mild slope tidal flat including wide surf zone, the tides and winds were the major affection component of the littoral currents, on the other hand, the wave-induced currents seemed the minor component when the incident wave heights were relatively small.
In this study, we transplanted Chinese (Liaoning Dandong) and Chungnam (Taean) manila clam seeds to Gochang tidal flats in Jeonbuk province, and compared growth, mortality, and condition indices from May 2015 to August 2016. Within 2 months after transplantation, clam mortality of Chungnam and Chinese origin were $6.9{\pm}4.3%$, $16.9{\pm}7.9{\sim}21.0{\pm}6.3%$, respectively. We supposed that higher mortality of Chinese manila clams might be due to higher stress and weakening of physiological functions by air-exposure and unavailability of food intake for 5 days harvesting, transportation, quarantine procedures. Unlike the local clam farmer's opinion based on their field experience, growth of Chungnam clams in shell length and total weight were a little better than Chinese without statistical significant difference (P > 0.05). Condition indices of Chinese clams showed declining tendency after reaching a peak in May 2014, and in June 2015, respectively. Meanwhile, Chungnam clams has reached its peak of condition indices in May 2014 and in April 2015, respectively. From this result, we supposed that there might be at least one month difference in reproduction between the Chinese and Chungnam manila clams during the first-transplanted year. Because the mortality of adult clam have sharply increased from June 2015 (due to high temperature, few rainfall and spawning) in Gochang tidal flat, it would be recommendable that farmers harvest the clams before June when its shell length are larger than 40 mm. In conclusion, we could directly compare the productivity of Chinese and Chungnam manila clam at Gochang tidal flats by field experiment, and these results are also meaningful to manila clam farmers.
The tidal radii of globular clusters reflect the tidal field of the Galaxy. The mass distribution of the Galaxy thus may be obtained if the tidal fields of clusters are well known. Although large amounts of uncertainties in the determination of tidal radii have been obstacles in utilizing this method, analysis of tidal density could give independent check for the Galactic mass distribution. Recent theoretical modeling of dynamical evolution including steady Galactic tidal field shows that the observationally determined tidal radii could be systematically larger by about a factor of 1.5 compared to the theoretical values. From the analysis of entire sample of 148 globular clusters and 7 dwarf spheroidal systems compiled by Webbink (1985), we find that such reduction from observed values would make the tidal density (the mean density within the tidal radius) distribution consistent with the flat rotation curve of our Galaxy out to large distances if the velocity distribution of clusters and dwarf spheroidals with respect to the Galactic center is isotropic.
Vertical distribution of bacterial population and activities were compared between the muddy and sandy sediment of the tidal flat located in southern area of Ganghwa Island. The average of bacterial number and activities in mud flat was slightly higher than that in sand flat. Bacterial number was markedly increased at the sandflat during the investigation period, which seemed to be the result of increase of mud content. The number and activities of microorganisms in mudflat was comparable to that of the mangrove sediments. There was no differences in bacterial number with the depth, but the aminopeptidase activity and bacterial productivity were decreased markedly within 3~5cm depth of sediment due to the availability of carbon sources and molecular oxygen in pore water. The number and activities of microorganisms in mudflat did not correlated with the distribution of benthic microalgae; however, those in sand flat were closely correlated with the distribution of benthic microalgae. The distribution of marsh plant in the mudflat area might be the reason of the difference.

Two-dimensional finite element hydrodynamic models for long wave simulation usually adopt fixed land boundary. However moving boundary treatment is strongly required in the simulation of tidal flats for west and south coast of Korea. In this study very efficient and realistic moving boundary treatment is applied by considering incident long wave surface slope. Developed STEP-CM (Superior Two-step Explicit Program for Coastal Modeling) ,shows numerically stable results in comparative study for idealized one-dimensional channel. Real application of the model is done for Chonsu Bay where tidal flats are distributed along the coast. Nonlinear tidal current and tidal flat effects are easily simulated in STEP-CM and resulting circulations are detected around headland of Wonsan Island.

In Mokpo coastal zone, the characteristics showing ebb-dominant tidal flow was confirmed by analysis of observed tide and tidal currents, Physical factors occurring ebb-dominant flow were reviewed. Influence of critical depth for drying, bottom shear stress, coastal reclamation, tidal amplitude, nonlinear tide, and eddy viscosity on the change of ebb-dominant flow was investigated by applying a two-dimensional circulation model. The simulation results for a variety of conditions showed that eddy viscosity and critical depth for drying does little or no impact on the generation of asymmetric flow. Strong bottom friction stress makes ebb-dominant flow clearly. Change of tidal flat into land swells ebb- dominant flow, and change of tidal flat into sea disappears ebb-dominant flow. Nonlinear tides play a decisive role in the generation of asymmetrical tidal flow. Non-linear tides should be included in the open boundary conditions of hydrodynamic modeling in the Mokpo coastal zone.

This study is carried out to offer the raw data for conservation and management of tidal flat ecosystem by surveying and analysing the flora distributed in Daesong tidal flat wetland, Ahnsan-si, Gyeonggi-do coast, Korea. The results of surveying the flora were recorded as 186 taxa including 45 families, 121 genera, 170 species, 14 varieties and 2 forms. The halophytes checked around this site were 20 taxa including Atriplex gmelinii, Salicornia europaea, Suaeda glauca, Suaeda japonica, Phragmites communis, Carex scabrifolia and so forth. Polygonum bellardii that species had ecological value was the specific plant by floristic region. The growth locations of halophytes were 11 taxa of upper, 4 taxa of high tide line and 5 taxa of lower. The naturalized plants were 42 taxa including Phytolacca americana, Chenopodium glaucum, Melilotus alba, Veronica persica, Bidens pilosa, Leptochloa fusca and so forth. Because Aster subulatusand Leptochloa fusca grew a upper tidal flat wetland, they had the characteristics of halophytes. The focuses on the management of Daesong wetland were halophytes and naturalized plants. Firstly, to maintain a halophytes communities, we will sow the halophytes seeds and plant the individuals. And In-Situ conservation was applied to Polygonum bellardii habitat. Secondly, to prevent the genesis of naturalized plant, we will don't disturb around the wetland environment. The invasive alien plant, Lactuca scariola, was removed by periodic monitoring and purification activity.
In Kwangyang Bay, the south coast of Korea, surface sediments and sedimentation rates have been investigated to understand the distribution and variation of tidal flat sediments after the construction of sea dyke. The mean grain size of the surface sediments during autumn is coarser, and decrease from winter to summer except for temporarily coarsening in the early summer. The depositional processes are prevalent in spring, while erosional processes are dominant in summer and autumn. This seasonal variation of sedimentary processes show similar results monitored from 2001 to 2003 before the construction of sea dyke. In the northern area of the bay, net annual sedimentation rates show similar results monitored from 2001 to 2003 before the construction of sea dyke. However, in the western area of the bay, net annual sedimentation rates change from erosion-dominated to deposition-dominated environments. It is considered that the western area of the bay is changed to erosion-dominated environments, as a result of the changes of hydrodynamic conditions, caused by sea dyke construction.
