An oil spill model, Green Sea Ranger(GSR) based on trajectory and fate modeling of spilt oil behavior is introduced. The various physical models on weathering processes are reviewed and those adopted by GSR are described. A database for currents, which is necessary for the real-time simulation of oil spill, is generated on the south sea of Korea. The real-time prediction of tidal currents in the South Sea of Korea is carried out. Four major constituents (M₂, S₂, K₁, O₁ tide) are employed in the prediction, and those angular speeds and phases are determined from the astronomical arguments. The harmonic constants of the constituents are computed by solving shallow-water tide equations. The GSR has user-freiendly GUI and flexible framework which makes it easy to expand the database for sea environments in Korean coastal waters. The GSR is validated by the simulation of O-Sung oil spill caused by a grounded oil tanker in coastal sea near Maemol-do. The simulated trajectory is compared with observed one and it is shown that the GSR gives reasonable estimation on spilt oil bahavior.
The build-up of the heat field in shallow coastal water due to a point source has been investigated using an analytical solution of a time-integral form derived by extending the solutions by Holley(1969) and also presented in Harleman (1971). The uniform water depth is assumed with non-isotropic turbulent dispersion. The alongshore-flow is assumed to be uni-directional, spatially uniform and oscillatory. Due to the presence of the oscillatory alongshore-flow, the heat build-up occurs in an oscillatory manner, and the excess temperature thereby fluctuates in that course and even in the quasi-steady state. A series of calculations reveal that proper choices of the decay coefficient as well as dispersion coefficients are critical to the reliable prediction of the excess temperature field. The dispersion coefficients determine the absolute values of the excess temperature and characterize the shoreline profile, particularly within the tidal excursion distance, while the decay coefficient determines the absolute value of the excess temperature and the convergence rate to that of the quasi-steady state. Within the e-folding time scale $1/k_d$ (where $k_d$ is the heat decay coefficient), heat build-up occurs more than 90% of the quasi-steady state values in a region within a tidal excursion distance (L), while occurs increasingly less the farther we go to the downstream direction (about 80% at 1.25L, and 70% at 1.5L). Calculations with onshore and offshore discharges indicate that thermal spreading in the direction of the shoreline is reduced as the shoreline constraint which controls the lateral mixing is reduced. The importance of collecting long-term records of in situ meteorological conditions and clarifying the definition of the heat loss coefficient is addressed. Interactive use of analytical and numerical modeling is recommended as a desirable way to obtain a reliable estimate of the far-field excess temperature along with extensive field measurements.
The aim of this study was to explore the role of galaxy mergers on the formation and evolution of galaxies in galaxy clusters. For this purpose, u', g', r' deep optical imaging and multi-object spectroscopic observation were done for four rich Abell clusters at z ${\lesssim}$ 0.1 (A119, A2670, A3330, and A389) with a MOSAIC 2 CCD and Hydra spectrograph mounted on a Blanco 4-m telescope at CTIO. With the deep images, we found that about 25% of the bright red-sequence galaxies exhibited post-merger signatures in a cluster environment. This fraction was much higher than what was expected from the results of the field environment (-35%, van Dokkum 2005) and significantly low on-going merger fractions (about one-fifth of the field) appeared in the clusters currently. Taking advantage of the most up-to-date semi-analytic model, the results indicate that most of the post-merger galaxies may have carried over their merger features from their previous halo environment. All the brightest cluster galaxies in our cluster samples revealed faint structures in their halos as well as multiple nuclei in their centers seen in the deep optical images. We suggest that the mass of the BCGs increased mainly though major mergers at recent epochs based on their post-merger signatures and the large gaps in the total magnitudes between the BCGs and the second-rank BCGs. A UV bright tidal tail and tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidates around the post-merger galaxy, NGC 4922, were discovered in the outskirts of the Coma cluster using the GALEX UV data. We did two-component stellar population modeling for the TDG candidates and the results indicate that they are an early form of dwarf galaxies frequently found around massive early-type galaxies in clusters. In conclusion, we suggest that the mergers of galaxies are an important driving force behind galaxy formation and evolution in cluster environments even until recent epochs.

The effect of depth correction in the coastal sea has been investigated through a series of tide simulations in the area of $115{\sim}150^{\circ}E,\;20{\sim}52^{\circ}N$ of northwestern Pacific with $1/12^{\circ}$ resolution. Comparison of the solutions varying the minimum depth from 10m to 35 m with the 5m interval shows that the amplitude accuracies of $M_2,\;S_2,\;K_1$ tide using the minimum depth of 25 m have been improved up to 42%, 32%, 26%, respectively, comparing to those using the minimum depth of 10m. The discrepancy between model results using different minimum depth is found to be up to 20 cm for $M_2$ tidal amplitude around Cheju Islands and the positions of amphidromes are dramatically changed in the Bohai Sea. The calculated ARE(Averaged Relative Error) values have been minimized when the bottom frictional coefficient and the minimum depth is 0.0015 and 25 m, respectively.

The water level variation due to the Typhoon around the coast of Pusan in the southern sea of Korea is investigated from the observed tidal record. Water level variations at six stations along the coast are discussed in association with the meteorological data. The characteristics of storm surge at Pusan during Typhoon Thelma in 1987 is analysed using the observed data, and it is performed the numerical simulation of storm surge which includes a inverse barometric effect due to the horizontal distribution of sea sur-face pressure. From the calculation results, the peak value of storm surge in the coast of Pusan was occur-red around the 01:00 July 16th, which is well coincident with the observed water level variation at the Kadukdo. However, the calculated value at the Pusan TBM is inconsistent with the observed one, which is regarded due to a reason that the Tidal Bench Mark (TBM) locates in the channel. In the computation results, the maximum surge occurs at the coast of Nakdong estuary, which is considered primarily due to a topographic effect, and water level variation exceeded 2.5 meter in these areas while only about 60 cm in another coasts.

During summer, the DIN (dissolved inorganic nitrogen) and DIP (dissolved inorganic phosphate) observed in the Jindong Bay in the southern sea of Korea show much higher values in the inner area of the bay. In general, they have high values in the upper (0-1 m) and lower layers (8 m-bottom), but are relatively lower in the middle layer (1-8 m). These features in their distribution are examined using an ecosystem model with considering the wind, tidal current, horizontal gradient of water density and residual flow. The experiments were focused on how to influence nutrients associated with these conditions. In the experiment with tide-induced residual flow, the values of nutrients appeared lower than the observation, and were well corresponded to it when the effects of wind, tide-induced residual current and horizontal gradient of water density were additionally imposed. A statistical analysis identifies these results. This paper suggests that variation of nutrient in the Jindong Bay during summer should be seriously a(footed wind-driven current by the wind and density-driven current is induced by the horizontal gradient of water density as well as tidal current.

In this study, a method for flood runoff analysis in main channel connected with interior floodplain, is applied for evaluation of hydraulics of Sapgyo lake for the purpose of flood protection by considering tidal effect of West Sea and runoff from the watershed. Especially, operational condition of sluice gate was explicitly modeled in conjunction with various runoff scenarios from watershed. The change in hydraulics of main channel and interior floodplain was found to be predominantly affected by tidal effect, and explicit modeling of gate operation made possible the evaluation of hydraulic characteristics of different alternatives. Until now, such an analysis was not made due to the lack of models with such capability, however, with the proposed method, it is possible to perform such an analysis and is thought that the proposed method can be a valuable tool for flood protection planning.

The ECOM3D is used to study the circulation characteristics and density current from the Sumjin River runoff in the Kwangyang Estuarine System, South Sea, Korea. Annual mean value of $120m^3/s$ was imposed from the Sumjin River. The numerical model results in terms of tidal height, current and salinity field show satisfactory with skill scores over 90%. The current velocity showed the range of 1~2.5 m/s during flood and ebb phases. In particular, very strong flow occur in the narrow Channels of Noryang, Daebang and Changson exceeding over 2.0 m/s. The tidal residual currents in the various locations in the Kwangyang Estuary showed the range of 1~21 cm/s, The density-driven current through the Yeosu and Noryang Channels are about 12 cm/s and 4 cm/s, respectively. The current path through the Yeosu Channel is deflected toward west Bank. Based on budget analysis of the volume flux, the volume flux through the Yeosu Channel and the Noryang Channel were estimated to be 97.4 and $22.1m^3/s$ accounting for the 81.5% and 18.5% of total flux, respectively.

In coastal region, eutrophication, Do deficit and red tide are frequently occurred by influx of fresh water. When the fresh water containing pollutants is discharged into the sea, the surrounding water is contaminated by dispersion of freshwater flowing into coastal waters. The prediction and analysis about the dispersion process of the discharged fresh water should be conducted. A modeling system using GUI was developed to simulate hydrodynamic flow and fresh water dispersion in coastal waters and to analyze the results efficiently. The modeling module of the system includes a tide model using a finite element method and a fresh water dispersion model using a particle-tracking method. This system was applied to predict the tidal currents and fresh water dispersion in Mokpo coastal zone. To verify accuracy of the hydrodynamic model, the simulation results were compared with observed sea level and time variations of tidal currents showing a good agreement. The fresh water dispersion was verified with observed salinity distribution. The dispersion model also was verified with analytic solutions with advection-diffusion problems in 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional simple domain. The system is operated on GUI environment, to ease the model handling such as inputting data and displaying results. Therefore, anyone can use the system conveniently and observe easily and accurately the simulation results by using graphic functions included in the system. This system can be used widely to decrease the environmental disaster induced by inflow of fresh water into coastal waters.

A numerical study of a two-layer, stratified flow is investigated, using the implicit finite difference method in one dimension. The results of computational method have been tested and, in case of lock exchange flow, compared with the results of experimental data. The results of model experiments with various interfacial, bottom friction coefficients along with various time weighting factor of numerical scheme and dissipative interface are shown and discussed. Two-layer model experiment has been also carried out to investigate the generation and propagation characteristics of internal tidal wave over the steep bottom topography under stratified condition. The internal wave seems to well radiate through the downstream boundary under the experiments adopting radiation conditions both at two layers and only at upper layer, confirming the applicability of radiational boundary condition in stratified flows. It is also shown that the internal wave through the downstream boundary propagates more actively with increasing thickness of lower layer in the downstream. This implies that the potential tidal energy in the interface will depend upon the thickness of lower layer for the constant thickness of upper layer.
