Numerical model with LPT (Lagrangian Particle Tracking) module was used to understand the variation of residence time in the outer sea of the Sihwa lake result operating from the Sihwa tidal power plant. Numerical model was composed in order to investigate the spatial distribution characteristics, the average residence time in each area was calculated by dividing the outer sea area of Sihwa lake into 4 areas. The average residence time of the areas appeared to be increase as it entered the areas located in the inner bay (13 days) from the area located in most outer sea (3 days) both before and during operation. Variation of average residence time by areas were increased in the area that was located in the most outer sea of during operation compared to before operation, and decreased in the other area. Artificial discharges from tidal power plant induces particle traps in the formation of vortex in the area located in the most outer seas, entrainment in the remaining areas, which affects variation in residence time. In other words, the jet flow generated during drainage and the change in the residence time due to the vortex and entrainment action indicate the increase horizontal mixing of water in the outer sea and in the inner bay.

This paper presents the evidence on the considerably strong stratification - destratification(SD) phenomena during spring - neap tidal cycle in summer of 1992 based on the observed temperature, salinity and density data. To find out the main factors causing SD in the bay, we computed the rate of potential energy balance of the surface heat flux, tidal and wind stirring proposed by Simpson and Hunter (1974) and Simpson and Bowders (1981) using observed data. It was found that the energy of the wind stirring was one - order smaller than those of the heat flux and the tidal stirring. It means that the variation of stratification phenomena in the bay mainly depend on tidal stirring and sea surface heating in summer if there was no exceptionally strong wind event like a typhoon. Finally, we tested the effects of typhoon on the mixing characteristics of the bay using the example of a empirical typhoon model. It was found that when wind speed is larger than 15m/sec in Deukryang Bay, the wind energy was always larger than the average heating energy based on empirical typhoon model test. Particularly, typhoon passed on the left side of the bay, strong wind energy happened, which is almost the same as tidal energy of spring tide.

Nakdong Estuary is complex water system, where sea water and fresh water meet each other. After construction of Nakdong River Barrier, the flow pattern and mixing processes have been changed. Variations of physical oceanographic environment in Nakdong Estuary due to opening and closing the floodgate of Nakdong River Barrier are analysed focusing the movement of outflows from the barrier. Surveys and analysis were made for the three cases. 1. Ordinary times (opening and closing the gate by the tidal period) 2. A period of flood time (opening the gate) 3. A period of water shortage (closing the gate).

Two-dimensional trend-vector model of sediment transport is first tested in the tidal flat of Garolim Bay, mid-western coast of the Korean Peninsula. Three major parameters of surface sediment, i.e., mean grain size, sorting and skewness, are used for defining the best-fitting transport trend-vector on the sand ridge and muddy sand flat. These trend vectors are compared with the real transport directions determined from morphology, field observation and bedforms. The 15 possible cases of trend vectors are calculated from total sediments. In order to find the role of coarse sediments, trend vectors from sediments coarser than < 4.5 ${\phi}$, (sand size) are separately calculated from those of total sediments. As compared with the real directions, the best-fitting transport-vector model is the "case M" of coarse sediments which is the combined trend vectors of two cases: (1) finer, better sorted and more negatively skewed and (2) coarser, better sorted and more positively skewed. This indicates sand-size grains are formed by simpler hydrodynamic processes than total sediments. Transported sediment grains are better sorted than the source sediment grains. This indicates that consistent hydrodynamic energy can make sediment grains better sorted, regardless of complicated mechanisms of sediment transport. Consequently, both transported vector model and real transported direction show that the source of sediments are located outside of bay (offshore Yellow Sea) and in the baymouth. These source sediments are transported through the East Main Tidal Channel adjacent the baymouth. Some are transported from the subtidal zone to the upper tidal flat, but others are transported farther to the south, reaching the south tidal channel in the study area. Also, coarse sediment grains on the sand ridge are originally from the baymouth, and transported through the subtidal zone to the south tidal channel. These coarse sediments are moved to the northeast, but could not pass the small north tidal channel. It is interpreted that the great amount of coarse sediments is returned back to the outside of the bay (Yellow Sea) again through the baymouth during the ebb tide. The distribution of muddy sand in the northeastern part of study area may result from the mixing of two sediment transport mechanisms, i.e., suspension and bedload processes. The landward movement of sand ridge and the formation of the north tidal channel are formed either by the supply of coarse sediments originating from the baymouth and outside of the bay (subaqueous sand ridges including Jang-An-Tae) or by the recent relative sea-level rise.
The relatively tranquil area within the Gogunsan Archipelago was for the first time investigated preliminarily with respect to modern sedimentological processes in association with the emplacement of the Saemangeum Dyke. Basic sedimentological observations, bathymetry and surface sediments were performed twice during 2006-2008 to compare the results and elaborate changes during that period of time. In addition, sediment dynamical observations were carried out with latest measuring equipment along two transects crossing the entrances of the archipelago, including 12-hour onboard measurements of current, suspended sediments, temperature, and salinity. This dataset was used to reveal hydrodynamic characteristics for spring season April-May and to estimate the direction and relative magnitude of the net flux of suspended sediments. There occurred three depositional areas (A to C) within the archipelago, where sediment texture was also changed. In area A, around Yami Island and the dyke, and area B, in the center of the archipelago, surface sediments became coarsened over the two-year period; sand content increased 5% at the expense of silt content in the former, whereas silt content increased 3% at the expense of clay content in the latter. By comparison, area C in the western entrance of the archipelago shows a textural trend of fining with more silt and clay (combined increase of 5%) at the expense of sand content. The accumulation of sediments in areas A and B is attributable to the sand and silt resuspended from the seabed sediments off sector 4 of the dyke during the winter. The origin of the fine materials depositing on area C is uncertain at present, although suspended sediments moving offshore around the archipelago may be one of the most likely candidates for the source. The temperature of seawater increased rapidly from $9-10^{\circ}C$ in April to $14-16^{\circ}C$ in May, whereas salinity remained more or less constant at 31-32%o during the two months. Both of these parameters showed little variations with depth through a tidal cycle, suggesting good mixing of seawater without any help of significant waves. The consistency of salinity during a tidal cycle also indicates no insignificant effects of freshwater from the rivers Mangyung and Donjin emitting through the opening gap near Sinsi Island. The suspended sediment concentrations were higher at the entrance between Sunyu and Sinsi islands than at the entrance between Hoenggyong and Sinsi islands, ranging from 20 and 30 mg/l and from 5 and 15 mg/l, respectively at the sea surface. Although tidal currents were variable across a transect between Sunyu and Sinsi islands, the currents across the entrance between Hoenggyong and Sinsi islands flowed consistently in the same direction all over the transect during a tidal cycle. The estimation of net flux of suspended sediments indicates that suspended sediments are transferred to the Gogunsan Archipelago mainly through a relatively deep trough adjacent to Sinsi Island toward the shallow area around Yami Island and the dyke.
In comparision with calcium sulphate, the effect of calcium-carbonate, -silicate and -hydroxide on desalinization of tidal saline soil was investigated in a continuous leaching column experiments after mixing with an equivalent amount of Ca to sodium plus magnessium in the saline soil. One half of liming materials was mixed to the top one-tenth of column soil and the remainder was spread on the surface. Results obtained are as follows ; 1. Gypsum made easy to percolate and desaline (Na) tidal marine soil but accumulated magnessium in subsoil. 2. $Ca(OH)_2$, $CaCO_3$, and $CaSO_3$ precipitated Mg in the soil which limes were mixed, but they washed down magnessium more severely from the immediate bellow the limed soil and less from the subsequent soil layers. This leaching was more severer at the treatment of $Ca(OH)_2$and lowest at the treatment of $CaSiO_3$. 3. The alkalinity of lime in addition to the dissociation of exchangeable Na raised pH of limed leached tidal soil and slowed down the percolation rate which retarded desalining Na from limed saline soils. This effect was most severe in the $Ca(OH)_2$ treated soil. 4. pH of leached soils was correlated possitively with exchangeable Na and negatively with exchangeable Mg giving follwing relationship pH= 7.77+0.489 Na/Mg r = 0.845.
As an example of many possible applications of OSMI data, we present a method to detect red tides. In Korean waters, red tides usually occur in the South Sea where the turbidity is usually high due to strong tidal mixing in the shallow sea. The conventional case 1 chlorophyll algorithm cannot be applied since it cannot distinguish chlorophyll from SS (suspended sediments). In October 1998, a red tide outbreak occurred off the coast of Kunsan. We analyzed the SeaWiFS data of the outbreak. The standard SeaWiFS chlorophyll algorithm OC2 was poor in identifying the red tides. However, comparison of spectra of normalized water-leaving radiance indicates that red tide pixels can be distinguished from sediment-laden pixels. Channel 443 and 555 were effective in showing the spectral characteristics. We suggest K490 algorithm as an example in summarizing the information of the spectra and thereby in distinguishing the red tide pixels. Further development is desirable.
The vertical temperature profiles of the Yellow Sea in summer are investigated by means of the nine air temperature (AT) patterns which are classified with the AT of winter and summer. The sea surface temperature (SST) is high when the AT of summer is high, and vice versa. The gradient of thermocline in the offshore region is higher than that in the coastal region and is not always favorable with the AT patterns. The relation between sea bottom temperature (SBT) and the AT of winter is favorable when the SBT is averaged in the coastal and offshore stations. In addition, the SST of coastal stations is higher than that of offshore stations because of the strong mixing by the tidal current in the coastal region. The correlation between the AT and the SST of August is favorable (r=0.44-0.69), while the correlation between the AT of February and the SBT of August is not favorable except the stations, A2 (r=0.57) and B2 (r=0.61).

In order to study the seasonal variation in the physical properites in Suyoung Bay, we investigated the distributions of temperature, salinity, transparency and water color from May 1989 to April 1990. We also observed the tidal currents from February 27 to March 6 1990. There are conspicuous seasonal variation in water temperature and salinity. Water masses are characterized by two water types, i.e., one is influenced principally by river runoff and the other by the Tsushima Current. Transparency and water color increased gradually from the head of the bay to the mouth of the bay in all seasons. In winter, the transparency of water becomes minimum due to the enhanced vertical mixing.
