To examine the structure and distribution of the Keum River plume produced by continuous river discharge we carried out three-dimensional numerical model experiments with or without Coriolis force and tide. When Coriolis force is included but tide is not the model plume forms the clockwise circulation north of southern channel in the developing stage. As the plume expansion progresses the center of circulation moves to the southwest, with fuming the discharging axis of low-salinity water to the southwest from the mouth of southern channel. These results are explained mainly in terms of barotropic geostrophy by surface slope maintained with accumulated low-salinity(buoyant) water in front of the estuary mouth due to of offshore strong salinity front. When the M$_2$ tide is included the model plume extends farther to the northwest, forming large tongue-like salinity distribution. The tidally averaged surface flows of the offshore plume are mainly in geostrophic balance. These changes in plume distribution are explained in terms of low-salinity water advection by tidal excursion and active tidal mixing; the former supplies low salinity water to the north off the estuary mouth and the later increases mean sea level along the plume and surface salinity in northern shallow coastal area. The main features of observed Keum River plume(Lee et al., 1999; Choi et al., 1999), which showed the northwestward deflection of the plume axis and northward deepening of the plume thickness from the estuary mouth region, are well reproduced by the model in which tide is included.
Behaviors of effulent are observed and discussed with reference to the tide and freshwater discharge in the estuary of Suyoung Bay. The esturine front is located at $0.5{\sim}1.3km$ seaward from of the Suyoung Bridge at the spring tide, and $0.8{\sim}1.0km$ at the neap tide. After the heavy precipitations, the front moved seaward and was located at $1.3{\sim}2.5km$ southeast of the Suyoung Bridge. Internal Froude numbers in the estuarine salinity front are estimated approximately to be 1 both at the spring and neap tide. Entrainment coefficient decreases down stream to the estuarine front, and then increases seaward from the estuarine front due to the tidal mixing.
Studies on the flow pattern due to reclamation in the Myunggi-Nocksan region are carried out based on field observations and numerical experiments. Serial time series measurement of current, temperature and salinity were conducted for 1 tidal period at intervals of 1 hour from surface to bottom on station located at 128.deg. 54' 44" E, 35.deg. 01' 04" N in April and June 1992. Surface current opposite to the subsurface current causes turbulent mixing to make homogeneous salinity pattern in vertical section. Reclamation has little effect on the wave pattern and flow patterns are also nearly similar except on the nearby region of reclamation where flow speed somewhat weakened.
Due to the increased construction of offshore concrete structures and the use of de-icing salts for the purpose of snow removal, the needs for the development of anti-corrosive concrete are increasing. To solve these problems, an evaluation of the mechanical and durability properties for concrete were conducted by mixing modified-sulfur as 0 %, 5 %, 10 %, 15 % cement weight ratio. Both strengths and the properties affecting durability such as water absorption coefficient, chloride ion permeability, accelerated carbonation resistance, rapid freezing and thawing, and chemical resistance were evaluated. All evaluations performed were according to the test specifications associated KS. The results indicate that mixing of modified-sulfur lowed chloride ion permeability and improved chemical resistance.
A seasonal circulation pattern in the eastern Yellow Sea (EYS) is suggested from the water mass analysis and geostrophic calculation using the hydrographic data collected by National Fisheries Research and Development Institute during the years of 1970 to 1990. This research focuses on the presence of inflow of warm (and saline) waters into EYS in summer. EYS is divided into two regions in this paper: the west coast of Korea (WCK) and the central Yellow Sea (CYS). In CYS, waters are linked with warm waters near Cheju Island in winter, but with cold waters from the north in summer (in the lower layer). It is not simple to say about WCK because of the influences of freshwater input and tidal mixing. Nevertheless, water mass analysis reveals that along WCK, waters have the major mixing ratios (40-60%) of warm waters in summer, while the dominant mixing ratios (50-90%) of cold waters in winter. Such a seasonal change of water mass distribution can be explained only by seasonal circulation. In winter, warm waters flow northward into CYS and cold waters flow southward along WCK. In summer, warm waters flow northward along WCK and cold waters flow southward into CYS. This circulation pattern is supported by both statistical analysis and dynamic depth topography. Accordingly, Yellow Sea Warm Current may be defined as the inflow of warm waters to CYS in winter and to WCK in summer.
In order to investigate the temporal variability of dissolved and particulate trace metals in the Han River, water samples were collected intermittently at two sites for 3 years (August 91 to December 94). Surface seawaters covering the range of salinity were also collected at the estuarine region to evaluate the role of estuary for the riverine fluxes of trace metals within the estuary during October 95 and 96. During the study period, dissolved metal concentrations in riverwaters varied by a factor of 5-10 for Fe, Ni, Co and Cu and 50-100 for Mn, Cd and Pb depending upon the water level; high concentration during the low water and low concentration in high water period except for Fe. The concentration of dissolved Fe increased with increasing water discharge. These concentration-discharge relationships of the studied trace metals are explained by the successive dilution of waters from two different origins, which can be presumably identified as anthropogenic discharges and watershed flushing. Although estuarine waters at early mixing region were not collected due to the difficulty of sampling, mixing behaviors of metals were inferred from the concentration-salinity relationships through the laboratory mixing experiment and field sampling, and distribution coefficients between dissolved and labile particulate phases. It is suggested that the Han River estuary plays a role of accumulating Fe, Mn, Co and Pb from riverine sources due to high turbidity caused by strong tidal current, whereas this system serves as a source of dissolved Cd due to release caused by extended residence time of riverine particles.

The behavior and mixing process of the forced plume are studied in the hydraulic laboratory. The dilution rate of discharged waste water from the port in various hydraulic condition was analized. The effect of densimetric Froude number and the discharge type on the dilution rate are discussed: In the vertical discharge, the forced plume of small densimetric Froude number mixes more actively than that of the large one. In the horizontal discharge, forced plume of large densimetric Froude number dilutes more rapidly than that of the small one. The mixing takes place more vigorously in the horizontal discharge than in the vertical one. The multi-port diffuser is more effective for the waste water discharge system than the single port diffuser in the tidal swinging coastal sea.
For the last years, it has become hot issue such as disposal of the treated wastewater, which caused by increment of a population and industrial development at the coastal areas. The ocean outfall system discharges primary or secondary treated effluent into coastline or at the deep water, or between these two. The effluent, which has a density similar to that of fresh water, rises to the see, surface forming plume or jet, together with entraining the surrounding salt water and becomes very dilute. This paper deals ocean outfall design which effects to decision-making about marine environment management and wastewater treatment. In order to make predictions of dilution of discharged water and the trajectory of a plume, CORMIX has been used considering several elements including a seasonal and tidal changes. These solutions are strung together to provide basic data and general drawings for effective management of outfall.

The winter case of the near-field dilution at the Masan outfalls has been studied by field measurements and CORMIX model simulations. Dilution rates of the wastewater discharge in winter were obtained by a salinity deficit method using the field data observed in the neap tidal period of February, 1999. The observed dilution rates in winter season were found to be very high in the range of 90~130 due to the isopycnal mixing of ambient density compared with the summer range of 30~40 under weak neap tidal currents. The results of CORMIX model simulations also show that the winter dilution rates under a weak ambient current(Ua=6.0ms/s) were increased by 3-fold of the summer dilution rates. However, the difference between two seasons becomes small by 30% under a strong current(Ua=15.5cm/s). This result indicates that the dilution and hydrodynamic mixing process of the effluents are more influenced by ambient crossflow condition than by ambient density stratification at the outfalls site.

Mixing zone characteristics of the wastewater effluents discharged from Sokcho ocean outfall have been investigated using an outfall mixing zone model which was developed on the basis of Huang et al.'s(1996) analysis method. The model was applied to Sokcho ocean outfall case and was used to simulate the concentration distribution of wastewater effluents using winter season's data, ie. daily effluent flowrate, ocean current and density stratification data which were measure for two months in the outfall area. Hourly concentration distribution of outfall effluent discharges was calculated and they were averaged for the period of 15 days which covers the ambient flow variability of the neap and the spring tidal currents. The results show that near-field dilution was relatively high with the minimum dilution of 130 for the winter season. The mixing zone was extended to the coastal beach area rather than offshore because of major direction of coastal currents. This may cause a deteriorating impact on coastal water quality, especially to the adjacent swimming beach area.
