  • Antimicrobial susceptibility and multiple drug resistance patterns have been carried out on total of 364 isolates of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis isolated from foodborne patients in Seoul from 2001 to 2005. Overall, the highest percentage of resistance was found to the following antimicrobial agents: streptomycin (46.7%), ampicillin (37.3%), ticarcillin (36.7%), tetracycline (36.0%), nalidixic acid (20.7%), chloramphenicol (13.3%), amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (6.7%) and Ampicillin/sulbactam (4.0%). Seventy five percentage of isolates were found to be resistant to one or more of the antimicrobes tested. The resistant rates to nalidixic acid and chloramphenicol in S. Enteritidis tested were annually increased but the resistant rate to tetracycline was decreased and the resistant rates to streptomycin, ampcilin and ticarcillin were remained steadily. The most frequent patterns of multiresistant isolates were only nalidixic acid resistant (18.0%) and streptomycin-tetracycline (18.0%), streptomycin-ampicillin-ticarcillin (10%), and ampicillin-ticarcillin (5.5%). Overall the resistant rates of 1 drug was 19.3%,2 drugs 24.7%, 3 drugs 6.7% and 4 or more drugs 24.0%. The resistant rates of 1 drug and 2 drugs in 2005 were increased dramatically.

Total of 787 fecal samples were collected and examined. Results and Conclusions: In test for enteropathogenic bacteria, total of 79 cases out of 787 samples from hospitals showed positive isolation. Among 79 positive samples, 27 cases were confirmed as Salmonella spp.. 20 cases as pathogenic E. coli, 18 cases as Clostridium perfringens, 6 cases as Staphylococcus aureus, 4 cases as Shigella spp. and 4 cases as Vibrio parahaemolyticus. In test for enteropathogenic virus, 190 cases out of 787 samples from hospitals showed positive reaction. Among 190 samples, 115 cases were confirmed as rotavirus, 55 cases as norovirus, 5 case as astrovirus, 4 case as rotavirus & norovirus, 3 cases as adenovirus, 2 case as rotavirus & astrovirus. In test for enteropathogenic protozoa, 6 cases out of 787 samples from hospitals showed positive result. Among 6 samples, 5 cases were confirmed as Entamoeba histolytica and 1 cases as Giardia lamblia. When we classified the positive results by the age of the patients, the highest isolation rate was noted in a group of age under 10 and over 60 for bacterial, viral and protozoal pathogens. Especially, patient below age of 5 showed high positive rate. When we classified the positive results by the time, pageathogenic bacteria were isolated throughout the year, and the highest frequency was noted in August. On the other hand, pathogenic viruses were detected more frequently during the colder season from December to April. Antimicrobial susceptibility test for the isolated bacteria resulted as follows; Salmonella strains showed high drug resistance rates against ampicillin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, nalidixic acid, ticarcillin. Shigella strains showed high drug resistance rates against ampicillin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, ampicillin/sulbactam, ticarcillin. Pathogenic E. coli strains showed high drug resistance rates against ampicillin, cephalothin, gentamicin, tetracycline, nalidixic acid, ampicillin/sulbactam, ticarcillin.

The two hundred and ninety eight isolates (41.5%) were identified as Sal. Enteritidis, followed by Sal. Typhi 218 isolates (30.4%), and Sal. Typhimurium 87 isolates (12.1%). The identified Salmonella species were most resistant to tetracycline (32.7%), followed by streptomycin (28.0%), ticarcillin (18.1%) and ampicillin (12.4%). Among isolates,34.7% of Sal. Enteritidis were resistant to tetracycline, 32.3% to streptomycin,23.2% to ticarcillin,13.5% to ampicillin, respectively. 13.8% of Sal. Typhi were resistant to streptomycin,10.6% to tetracycline, respectively.66.7% of Sal. Typhimurium were resistant to tetracycline, 42.5% to streptomycin, 28.7% to ticarcillin, 26.4% to ampicillin and 17.2% to chloramphenicol, respectively. Of 718 isolates, 324 isolates (45.1%) were resistant to 1 or more drugs and 64 isolates (19.8%) were resistant to 1 drug, 132 isolates (40.7%) were resistant to 2 drugs,50 isolates (15.4%) were resistant to 3 drugs, 27 isolates (8.3%) to 4 drugs,27 isolates (8.3%) to 5 drugs,22 Isolates (6.8%) to 6 drugs. The most prevalent multiple resistant pattern was tetracycline-kanamycin (35.5%), followed by tetracycline-kanamycin-ticarcillin (8.3%), and tetracycline-kanamycin-ticarcillin-ampicillin (7.4%) . Antibiotic resistant rate of Sal. Typhimurium was 73.6%,1311owe4 by Sal. Enteritidis 53.7% and Sal. Typhi 19.3%. Most Sal. Enteritidis was resistant to 1 drug o.2 drugs, whereas Sal. Typhi. and Sal.. Typhunurium were more .resistant to 5 (16.7%) or 6 drugs (26.6%). The old generation antibiotics such as ampicillin, tetracycline, and streptomycin were annually more resistant than the new generation antibiotics such as ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin or cefoxitin.
