  • Based on the generalized Gaussian pdf of DCT coefficients of images, Hernandez et al. propose the ML test applied watermark decoder. For images with watermarks shaped by the visibility thresholds of DCT coefficients and the luminance masking of human visual system, they conclude that the ML test with an appropriately chosen parameter associated with the pdf of DCT coefficients outperforms the correlation based decoder. In this paper, the parameter is estimated using various methods including a novel one for watermarks shaped by the visibility thresholds of DCT coefficients and the luminance masking as Hernandez et al. did and with the contrast masking added, and its effect on performance is compared.

  • In the two-tier CDMA cellular system with microcells and overlaying macrocells, slow-moving mobile user are assigned to microcells and those who move fast are assigned to overlaying macrocells in order to minimize the total number of handoffs. With this consideration the problem is how to find the thresholds by which the system distinguishes fast-moving user from those who move slowly based on the estimated speed of users. In this paper, two methods for the mobile speed estimation are proposed and two operations schemes for micro-macro cellular CDMA system are suggested. Based on these, Optimization models to find the optimal thresholds for micro-macrocell selection, which are subject to the constrains of QoS, are developed in view of minimizing the weighted total number of handoffs. And then algorithms to find optimal solutions of the models are devised.

  • A psychoacoustic model based noise shaping method is proposed. The method shapes the noise in the frequency domain such that its presence with a host signal will not be perceptually noticeable. The derivation of imperceptible noise levels from the masking thresholds of the signal involves deconvolution associated with the spreading function in the psychoacoustic model. It has been known as an ill-conditioned Problem. In this paper, a constrained optimization is applied such that the noise excitation level conforms to the masking thresholds of the signal. Thus, the noises embedded in the signal will not be perceived by human ear, and its performance is demonstrated experimentally.

  • Perceptibility and acceptability are the most often used threshold units in the field of color science. The former refers to a just perceptible difference and the latter evokes a tolerable color difference. Such thresholds can be very significant to color quality control processes in the printing industry and should be defined in quality measure units. Optical density (OD) and color difference models are usually utilized as color quality measures and have been provided in a considerable number of commercial measuring devices such as spectrophotometers. However, their merits and traits are far less understood in the literature. The present study intends to evaluate performance of those color quality measures including the OD and widely known color difference models, e.g. ${\Delta}E{^*}_{ab}$, ${\Delta}E_{CMC(l:c)}$ and ${\Delta}E{^*}_{00}$. A set of psychophysical assessments were carried out in order to accumulate the perceptibility and acceptability thresholds data, and their central trend was compared with the color quality measure estimates.

  • This study investigated human operator's perceptual and psychophysical responses to vibrotactile stimulation on various parts of the hand. Using a small vibrotactile display, the effects of three mechanical parameters consisting vibrotactile stimulations, i.e., vibration frequency, pulse-width modulation duty cycle, and number of contactors, on differential thresholds were examined at five different loci of the hand. It was observed that differential threshold varies with vibration frequency and number of active contactors. Differential sensitivity was the greatest at the vibration frequency of 120 Hz. The differential sensitivity was not found to be affected by loci on the hand. The area of stimulation on the hand was also found to be significant in that the sensitivity increased with the number of active contactors. It should be noted that the conclusions from this study generally correspond to those from the previous study on the absolute sensitivity. which means that tactile sensitivity to vibrotactile stimulations can be controlled with a systematic and consistent passion for emulating normal everyday contact on human hands in teleoperation and virtual reality applications.

  • Computational speed plays key role in background subtraction and shadow detection, because those are only preprocessing steps of a moving object segmentation, tracking and activity recognition. A color intensity variation based approach fastly detect a moving object and extract shadow in a image sequences. The moving object is subtracted from background using meanmax, meanmin thresholds and shadow is detected by decrease limit and correspondence thresholds. The proposed approach relies on the ability to represent shadow cast impact by offline experiment dataset on sub grouped RGB color space.

  • This paper proposes a segmentation algorithm using gray-level discontinuity and surface reflectance ratio of input images obtained under different illumination conditions. Each image is divided by a certain number of subregions based on the thresholds. The thresholds are determined using the histogram of fusion image which is obtained by ANDing the multiple input images. The subregions of images are projected on the eigenspace where their bases are the major eigenvectors of image matrix. Points in the eigenspace are classified into two clusters. Images associated with the bigger cluster are fused by revised ANDing to form a combined edge image. Missing edges are detected using surface reflectance ration and chain code. The proposed algorithm obtains more accurate edge information and allows to more efficiently recognize the environment under various illumination conditions.

  • There is an extensive literature on retrial queueing models. While a majority of the literature on retrial queueing models focuses on the retrial times to be exponentially distributed (so as to keep the state space to be of a reasonable size), a few papers deal with nonexponential retrial times but with some additional restrictions such as constant retrial rate, only the customer at the head of the retrial queue will attempt to capture a free server, 2-state phase type distribution, and finite retrial orbit. Generally, the retrial queueing models are analyzed as level-dependent queues and hence one has to use some type of a truncation method in performing the analysis of the model. In this paper we study a retrial queueing model with threshold-type policy for orbiting customers in the context of nonexponential retrial times. Using matrix-analytic methods we analyze the model and compare with the classical retrial queueing model through a few illustrative numerical examples. We also compare numerically our threshold retrial queueing model with a previously published retrial queueing model that uses a truncation method.

  • In this study, a real-time fall detection system based on a smartphone equipped with three-axis accelerometer and magnetometer was proposed and evaluated. The proposed system provides a service that detects falls in real time, triggers alarm sound, and sends emergency SMS(Short Message Service) if the alarm is not deactivated within a predefined time. When both of the acceleration magnitude and angle displacement of the smartphone attached to waist belt are greater than predefined thresholds, it is detected as a fall. The proposed system was evaluated against activities of daily living(walking, jogging, sitting down, standing up, ascending stairs, and descending stairs) and unintended falls induced by a proprietary pneumatic-powered mattress. With the thresholds of acceleration magnitude 1.7g and angle displacement $80^{\circ}$, it showed 96.5% accuracy to detect the falls while all the activities of daily living were not detected as fall.

  • The notions of ($\overline{\in}$, $\overline{\in}{\vee}\overline{qk}$)-fuzzy BCK-filters and fuzzy BCK-filters with thresholds are introduced, and several related properties are investigated. Characterizations of such notions are displayed, and implication-based fuzzy BCK-filters are discussed.
