Purpose The head of infants under 24 months old who has Craniosynostosis grows extraordinarily that makes head shape unusual. To diagnose the Craniosynostosis, surgeon has to inspect computed tomography(CT) images of the patient in person. It's very time consuming process. Moreover, without a surgeon, it's difficult to diagnose the Craniosynostosis. Therefore, we developed technique which detects Craniosynostosis automatically from the CT volume. Materials and Methods At first, rotation correction is performed to the 3D CT volume for detection of the Craniosynostosis. Then, cranial area is extracted using the iterative thresholding method we proposed. Lastly, we diagnose Craniosynostosis by analyzing centroid relationships of clusters of cranial bone which was divided by cranial suture. Results Using this automatical cranial detection technique, we can diagnose Craniosynostosis correctly. The proposed method resulted in 100% sensitivity and 90% specificity. The method perfectly diagnosed abnormal patients. Conclusion By plugging-in the software on CT machine, it will be able to warn the possibility of Craniosynostosis. It is expected that early treatment of Craniosynostosis would be possible with our proposed algorithm.
This paper proposes an efficient recognition method of car license plate from the car images by using both the dynamical thresholding and the neural network with enhanced learning algorithm. The car license plate is extracted by the dynamical thresholding based on the structural features and the density rates. Each characters and numbers from the p]ate is also extracted by the contour tracking algorithm. The enhanced neural network is proposed for recognizing them, which has the algorithm of combining the modified ART1 and the supervised learning method. The proposed method has applied to the real-world car images. The simulation results show that the proposed method has better the extraction rates than the methods with information of the gray brightness and the RGB, respectively. And the proposed method has better recognition performance than the conventional backpropagation neural network.

The plane curve approach which was proposed by Boukharouba et. al. is a multi-threshold selection method through searching peak-valley based on histogram cumulative distribution function. However the method is required to select parameters to compose plane curve, and the shape of plane curve is affected according to parameters. Therefore detection of peak-valley is effected by parameters. In this paper, we propose an entropy maximizing-based method to select optimal plane curve parameters, and propose a multi-thresholding method based on the selected parameters. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by multi-thresholding experiments on various images and comparison with other conventional thresholding methods based on histogram.

This paper, which covers a fluorescence microscopy image of brain tumor cells, looks at drug reactions by treating different types and concentrations of drugs on a plate of $24{\times}16$ wells. Due to the limitation of the field of view, a well was taken into 9 field images, and each has an overlapping area with its neighboring fields. To analyze more precisely, image stitching is needed. The basic method is finding a similar area using normalized cross-correlation (NCC). The problem is that some overlapping areas may not have any duplicated cells that help to find the matching point. In addition, the cell objects have similar sizes and shapes, which makes distinguishing them difficult. To avoid calculating similarity between blank areas and roughly distinguishing different cells, thresholding is added. The thresholding method classifies background and cell objects based on fixed thresholds and finds the location of the first seen cell. After getting its location, NCC is used to find the best correlation point. The results are compared with a simple boundary stitched image. Our proposed method stitches images that are connected in a grid form without collision, selecting the best correlation point among areas that contain overlapping cells and ones without it.

Conventional thresholding methods including Otsu's thresholding method are based on the gray levels frequency histogram. But the gray levels frequency histogram is obtained by recomposing only frequency information from an input image, where frequency histogram dose not contain any other informations such as the distribution of gray levels and relation between gray levels. Therefore the methods using the gray levels frequency histogram occasionally present inappropriate threshold values because it cannot reflect informations of the given image sufficiently. In this paper, we define a correlation function of gray levels and propose a novel thresholding method using the gray levels frequency histogram and the spatial correlation information. The effectiveness of the proposed method will be shown through comparison with Otsu's thresholding method.

Thresholding is a fundamental approach to segmentation that utilizes a significant degree of pixel popularity or intensity. Otsu's thresholding employed the normalized histogram as a discrete probability density function. Also it utilized a criterion that minimizes the between-class variance of pixel intensity to choose a threshold value for segmentation. However, the Otsu's method has a disadvantage of repeatedly searching optimal thresholds for the entire range. In this paper, a simple but fast multi-level thresholding approach is proposed by means of extending the Otsu's method. Rather than invoke the Otsu's method for the entire gray range, we advocate that the gray-level range of an image be first divided into smaller sub-ranges, and that the multi-level thresholds be achieved by iteratively invoking this dividing process. Initially, in the proposed method, the gray range of the object image is divided into 2 classes with a threshold value. Here, the threshold value for segmentation is selected by invoking the Otsu's method for the entire range. Following this, the two classes are divided into 4 classes again by applying the Otsu's method to each of the divided sub-ranges. This process is repeatedly performed until the required number of thresholds is obtained. Our experimental results for three benchmark images and fifty faces show a possibility that the proposed method could be used efficiently for pattern matching and face recognition.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive thresholding method to binarize two-dimensional barcode images. Adaptive thresholding methods are applied to document image binarization. Thus, they inappropriate to use in recognition of two-dimensional barcode images. To overcome the problem, we propose a new adaptive threshold method using the integral image. To show the effectiveness of our method, we compared our method with the well-known existing method in terms of visual quality and processing time. The experimental result indicates that the proposed method is superior to the existing method.

Electrocardiogram(ECG) signal noise as well as conducting other bio-signal measurement were generated. It was intened to enhance the accuracy of cadiac disease diagnosis with removing signal white-noise. Sampling signal was made with generating white-noise. The noise were removed using wavelet transforms and thresholding. Removed noise were compared numerical using SNR(signal to noise ratio). The results compared SNR showed that SURE method was 5.931, 4.9301 in 3, 5dB noise, uninversal was 3.6590, 1.9698 in 7, 9dB noise. De-noising by Thresholding removed noise effectively. ECG signal is expected to improve the accuracy of cadiac desease dianosis.

Noise removal methods for noisy images have been studied a lot in the domain of spatial and transform filtering. Low pass filtering was initially applied in the spatial domain. Recently, discrete wavelet transform has widely used for image denoising as well as image compression due to an excellent energy compaction and a property of multiresolution. In this paper, Gabor cosine and sine transform which is considered as human visual filter is applied to image denoising areas using soft thresholding technique. GCST is compared with excellent wavelet transform which uses existing soft thresholding methods from PSNR point of view. Resultant images removed noises are also visually compared. Experimental results with adding four different standard deviation levels of Gaussian distributed noises to real images show that the proposed transform has better PSNR performance of a maximum of 1.18 dB and visible perception than wavelet transform.

This paper presents splitting and merging algorithm based on adaptive thresholding. The algorithm first divides the image into blocks, and then compares each block using the calculated thresholding value. The blocks which are same are merged using the certain threshold value and different blocks are split unless it satisfies the threshold value. When the block has been merged, maximum and minimum block sizes are determined then the average block size is determined. After the average block size is determined the average intensity and standard deviation of average block is calculated. The process of thresholding is applied to binarize the image. Finally, the experimental results show that the proposed method distinguishes clearly the background with text in the document image.
