  • Compressive sensing is a new signal acquisition paradigm that enables sparse/compressible signal to be sampled under the Nyquist-rate. To fully benefit from its much simplified acquisition process, huge efforts have been made on improving the performance of compressive sensing recovery. However, concerning color images, compressive sensing recovery lacks in addressing image characteristics like energy distribution or human visual system. In order to overcome the problem, this paper proposes a new group-sparsity hard thresholding process by preserving some RGB-grouped coefficients important in both terms of energy and perceptual sensitivity. Moreover, a smoothed group-sparsity iterative hard thresholding algorithm for compressive sensing of color images is proposed by incorporating a frame-based filter with group-sparsity hard thresholding process. In this way, our proposed method not only pursues sparsity of image in transform domain but also pursues smoothness of image in spatial domain. Experimental results show average PSNR gains up to 2.7dB over the state-of-the-art group-sparsity smoothed recovery method.

  • In this paper, an adaptive thresholding of the nonuniformly contrasted images is proposed through using the contrast pre-enhancement of the local regions and the bilinear interpolation between the local threshold values. The nonuniformly contrasted image is decomposed into 9${\times}$9 sized local regions, and the contrast is enhanced by intensifying the gray level difference of each low contrasted or blurred region. Optimal threshold values are obtained by iterative method from the gray level distribution of each contrast-enhanced local region. Discontinuities are reduced at the region of interest or at the characters by using bilinear interpolation between the neighboring threshold surfaces. Character recognition experiments are conducted using backpropagation neural network on the characters extracted from the nonuniformly contrasted document, PCB, and wafer images binarized through using the proposed thresholding and the conventional thresholding methods, and the results prove the relative effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

  • SVD-based deconvolution algorithm has been known as the most effective technique for CT perfusion image analysis. In this algorithm, in order to reduce noise effects, SVD coefficients smaller than a certain threshold are removed. As the truncation threshold, either a fixed value or a variable threshold yielding a predetermined OI (oscillation index) is frequently employed. Each of these two thresholding methods has an advantage to the other either in accuracy or efficiency. In this paper, we propose a Monte Carlo simulation method to evaluate the accuracy of the two methods. An extension of the proposed method is presented as well to measure the effects of image smoothing on the accuracy of the thresholding methods. In this paper, after the simulation method is described, experimental results are presented using both simulated data and real CT images.

  • This study is aimed to perform more reliable unsupervised change detection through the re-extraction of the changed pixels which were extracted with global thresholding by applying buffer zone concept. First, three buffer zone was divided on the basis of the thresholding value which was determined using range average and the maximum distance point from a straight line. We re-extracted the changed pixels by performing unsupervised classification for buffer zone II which consists of changed pixels and unchanged pixels. The proposed method was implemented in Hyperion hyperspectral images and evaluated comparing to the existing global thresholding method. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method performed more accuracy change detection for vegetation area even if extracted slightly more changed pixels.

  • Currently. the north american symptomatic carotid endarterectomy trial, european carotid surgery trial, and common carotid method are used to measure the carotid stenosis for determining candidate for carotid endarterectomy using the projection angiography from different modalities such as digital subtraction angiography. rotational angiography, computed tomography angiography and magnetic resonance angiography. A new computerized carotid stenosis measuring system was developed using MR angiography axial image to overcome the drawbacks of conventional carotid stenosis measuring methods, to reduce the variability of inter-observer and intra-observer. The gray-level thresholding is one of the most popular and efficient method for image segmentation. We segmented the carotid artery and lumen from three-dimensional time-of-flight MRA axial image using gray-level thresholding technique. Using the measured intima-media thickness value of common carotid artery for each cases, we separated carotid artery wall from the segmented carotid artery region. After that, the regions of segmented carotid without artery wall were divided into region of blood flow and plaque. The calculation of carotid stenosis degree was performed as the following; carotid stenosis grading is(area measure of plaque/area measure of blood flow region and plaque) * 100%.

  • This paper proposes a multimodal registration method for segmentation of the Visible Human color images, in which color characteristics of bones are very similar to those of its surrounding fat areas. Bones are initially segmented in CT images, and then registered into color images to lineate their boundaries in the color images. For the segmentation of bones in CT images, a thresholding method is developed. The registration method registers boundaries of bodies in CT and color images using a cross-correlation approach, in which the boundaries of bodies are extracted by thresholding segmentation methods. The proposed method has been applied to segmentation of bones in a head and legs whose boundary is ambiguous due to surrounding fat areas with similar color characteristics, and produced promising results.

  • We propose a novel eye tracking method that can estimate 3D world coordinates using an infrared (IR) stereo camera for indoor and outdoor environments. This method first detects dark evidences such as eyes, eyebrows and mouths by fast multi-level thresholding. Among these evidences, eye pair evidences are detected by evidential reasoning and geometrical rules. For robust accuracy, two classifiers based on multiple layer perceptron (MLP) using gradient local binary patterns (GLBPs) verify whether the detected evidences are real eye pairs or not. Finally, the 3D world coordinates of detected eyes are calculated by region-based stereo matching. Compared with other eye detection methods, the proposed method can detect the eyes of people wearing sunglasses due to the use of the IR spectrum. Especially, when people are in dark environments such as driving at nighttime, driving in an indoor carpark, or passing through a tunnel, human eyes can be robustly detected because we use active IR illuminators. In the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed method can detect eye pairs with high performance in real-time under variable illumination conditions. Therefore, the proposed method can contribute to human-computer interactions (HCIs) and intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) applications such as gaze tracking, windshield head-up display and drowsiness detection.

  • IC package marking inspection system using machine vision locates and identifies the target elements from input image, and decides the quality of marking by comparing the extracted target elements with the standard patterns. This paper proposes an adaptive multi-level thresholding (AMLT) method which is suitable for a series of operations such as locating the target IC package, extracting the characters, and detecting the Pinl dimple. It also proposes a dynamic matching unit selection (DMUS) method which is robust to noises as well as effective to catch out the local marking errors. The main idea of the AMLT method is to restrict the inputs of Otsu's thresholding algorithm within a specified area and a partial range of gray values. Doing so, it can adapt to the specific domain. The DMUS method dynamically selects the matching unit according to the result of character extraction and layout analysis. Therefore, in spite of the various erroneous situation occurred in the process of character extraction and layout analysis, it can select minimal matching unit in any environment. In an experiment with 280 IC package images of eight types, the correct extracting rate of IC package and Pinl dimple was 100% and the correct decision rate of marking quality was 98.8%. This result shows that the proposed methods are effective to IC package marking inspection.

  • A wavelet method is presented in order to improve the computational efficiency of two dimensional unsteady flow problems while maintaining the order of accuracy of conventional CFD schemes. First, by using the interpolating wavelet transformation including decomposition and thresholding, an adaptive dataset to a solution is constructed. Then, inviscid and viscous fluxes are calculated only at the points within an adaptive dataset, which enhances the computational efficiency. Second, thresholding step is modified to maintain the spatial and temporal accuracy of conventional CFD schemes automatically by selecting the threshold value between user-defined value and the magnitude of spatial or temporal truncation error. The wavelet method suggested in this study is successfully applied to various unsteady flow problems and it is shown that the computational efficiency is enhanced with maintaining the computational accuracy of CFD schemes.
