  • Frequency reuse in a cellular wireless communication environment gives rise to a phenomenon of cochannel interference. This paper introduces a power control strategy for OFDM based communication systems operating in such an environment. Among the existing power control schemes, IWF(iterative waterfilling) is known to exhibit relatively good performance. However, it requires feedback of power level and bit allocation information for each subcarrier from a receiver to its associated transmitter, which can lead to a considerable overhead, especially for the case of employing large number of subcarriers. Motivated by this, we present a simplified power control scheme with reduced overhead feedback, which allocates some nonzero identical power to the subcarriers of which channel conditions are above a certain threshold and zero power to the other ones. Computer simulations show that the proposed strategy produces a good approximation to the performance of the IWF in terms of the transmission power level while it requires less overhead feedback.

  • The spectral efficiency of cellular networks can be improved when proximate users engage in device-to-device (D2D) communications to communicate directly without going through a base station. However, D2D communications that are not properly designed may generate interference with existing cellular networks. In this paper, we study resource allocation and power control to minimize the probability of an outage and maximize the overall network throughput. We investigate three power control-based schemes: the Partial Co-channel based Overlap Resource Power Control (PC.OVER), Fractional Frequency Reuse based Overlap Resource Power Control (FFR.OVER) and Fractional Frequency Reuse based Adaptive Power Control (FFR.APC) and also compare their performance. In PC.OVER, a certain portion of the total bandwidth is dedicated to the D2D. The FFR.OVER and FFR.APC schemes combine the FFR techniques and the power control mechanism. In FFR, the entire frequency band is partitioned into two parts, including a central and edge sub-bands. Macrocell users (mUEs) transmit using uniform power in the inner and outer regions of the cell, and in all three schemes, the D2D receivers (D2DRs) transmit with low power when more than one D2DRs share a resource block (RB) with the macrocells. For PC.OVER and FFR.OVER, the power of the D2DRs is reduced to its minimum, and for the FFR.APC scheme, the transmission power of the D2DRs is iteratively adjusted to satisfy the signal to interference ratio (SIR) threshold. The three schemes exhibit a significant improvement in the overall system capacity as well as in the probability of a user outage when compared to a conventional scheme.

  • Existing authentication mechanisms in cellular mobile communication networks are realized in the upper layer by employing cryptographic techniques. Authentication data are broadcasted over the air in plaintext, enabling attackers to completely eavesdrop on the authentication and get some information about the shared secret key between legitimate nodes. Therefore, reusing the same secret key to authenticate several times results in the secret key's information leakage and high attacking rate. In this paper, we consider the most representative authentication mechanism, Authentication and Key Agreement (AKA), in cellular communication networks and propose an enhanced AKA scheme based on Physical Layer Authentication (AKA-PLA). Authentication responses generated by AKA are no longer transmitted in plaintext but masked by wireless channel characteristics, which are not available to adversaries, to generate physical layer authentication responses by a fault-tolerant hash method. The authenticator sets the threshold according to the authentication requirement and channel condition, further verifies the identity of the requester based on the matching result of the physical layer authentication responses. The performance analyses show that the proposed scheme can achieve lower false alarm rate and missing rate, which are a pair of contradictions, than traditional AKA. Besides, it is well compatible with AKA.

  • In this study the problems of cell marking method used in the field of ATM network traffic control are presented. Also an extended cell marking method considering the user level priority is proposed. The conventional traffic monitoring schemes set the CLP bit of a cell to 1 only under the circumstance of the violation of traffic contract. It causes that the number of low level cells increases and the levels of cells are lowered regardless of the user level priority. The three level priority control method combining FCI bit with CLP bit has also been proposed. It divides CLP=0 cells into two levels. Consequently, the proposed method preserves more cells in high level than the conventional one and the real loss of high level cells can be reduced. The performance of the proposed scheme has also been analyzed by the PBS(partial buffer sharing) with two thresholds for the proposed three levels. The result shows that the PBS with two thresholds can give more efficient control than the scheme with no priority, or the PBS with one threshold.

  • The 3-step cell search has been considered for fast acquisition of the scrambling code unique to a cell in the W -CDMA system. In this paper, the performance of the cell search scheme is analyzed in Rayleigh fading channels. And the system parameters for cell search scheme and the design parameters for the receivers are examined. The probabilities of detection, miss and false alarm for each step are derived in closed forms based on the statistics of CDMA noncoherent demodulator output. Through the analysis, the effect of threshold setting and post detection integration for each step is investigated, and the optimal values of the power allocation for the synchronization channels are also considered. The number of post-detection integrations for each step is a design parameter for the receiver, and the optimum values may depend on not only the power allocation for each channel related to the cell search, but the false alarm penalty time. It is shown that optimal values could be determined through the analysis. Also, the cumulative probability distribution of the average cell search time is obtained.

  • The Viterbi decoder, which employs the maximum likelihood decoding method, is a critical component in forward error correction for digital communication system. However, lowering power consumption on the Viterbi decoder is a difficult task since the number of paths calculated equals the number of distinctive states of the decoder and the Viterbi decoder utilizes trace-back method. In this paper, we propose a method which minimizes the number of operations performed on the comparator, deployed in the SPEC-T Viterbi decoder implementation. The proposed comparator was applied to the ACSU(Add-Compare-Select Unit) and MPMSU(Minimum Path Metric Search Unit) modules on the decoder. The proposed ACS scheme and MPMS scheme shows reduced power consumption by 10.7% and 11.5% each, compared to the conventional schemes. When compared to the SPEC-T schemes, the proposed ACS and MPMS schemes show 6% and 1.5% less power consumption. In both of the above experiments, the threshold value of 26 was applied.

  • An energy detection based spectrum sensing has been found to be vulnerable to the noise power uncertainty. A cooperative spectrum sensing with an energy detector has appeared as one of the solutions to alleviate this difficulty. However, its performance analysis in a fading environment has not been reported yet in the literature. Motivated by this, this paper presents the performance analysis of the scheme by extending our previous work on evaluating the performance of an energy detector in the presence of noise power uncertainty. The analysis shows that the false alarm probability and detection probability gets higher as the sensing time and/or the number of the secondary users in the OR based cooperative spectrum sensing scheme increase when the noise power uncertainty exists.

  • In this paper, joint spatial division and reuse (JSDR) scheme is proposed for maximizing network throughput in densely-deployed wireless local area networks equipped with massive antenna array. The proposed JSDR scheme divides the massive spatial space into two subspaces: one is for suppressing the interference from the neighboring access points and another is for sensing the carrier sensing and transmitting the information-bearing signals to intended stations. By using computer simulation, the proposed JSDR can provide 133% higher network throughput, compared to the carrier sensing technique defined in the IEEE 802.11 standard so that the proposed JSDR is suitable for the next generation WLAN systems.

  • With the advancement of the digital broadcasting and popularity of the Internet, recently, many studies are making on the digital watermarking for the copyright protection of digital data. This paper proposes the minimum modification method of motion vector to minimize the degradation of video quality, hiding subtitles of many language and information of OST(original sound track), character profiles, etc. as well as the copyright protection. Our proposed algorithm extracts feature vector by comparing motion vector data with watermark data, and minimize the modification of motion vectors by deciding the inversion of bit. Thus the degradation of video quality is minimized comparing to conventional algorithms. This algorithm also can check data integrity, and retrieve embedded hidden data simply and blindly. And our proposed scheme can be useful for conventional MPEG-1, -2 standards without any increment of bit rate in the compressed video domain. The experimental result shows that the proposed scheme obtains better video quality than other previous algorithms by about $0.5{\sim}1.5dB$.
