  • This paper presents an analytical solution to predict the transient temperature distribution in fillet arc welding including the effect of molten metal. The solution is obtained by solving a transient three-dimensional heat conduction equation with convection boundary conditions on the surfaces of a plate, and mapping the infinite plate onto the fillet weld geometry with energy equation. The electric heat input on the fillet weld and on the infinite plate is assumed to have a combination of two bivariate Gaussian distribution. To check the validity of the solution. FCA welding experiments were performed under various welding conditions. The actual isotherms of the weldment cross-sections at various distances from the arc start point are compared with those of simulation result.

  • This paper presents the analysis technique and procedure of main engine components-cylinder block, cylinder liners, gasket and cylinder head-using the finite element method, which aims to assess mainly the potential of lower oil consumption in a view point of engine design and to decide subsequently the accuracy of engine design which was done. The F.E. model of an engine section consisting of one whole cylinder and two adjacent half cylinders is used, whereby the crankcase is cut off at the block bottom deck. By means of a 3-dimensional F.E. model-including cylinder block, liners, gasket, cylinder head, bolts and valve seat rings as separate parts a linear analysis of deformations and stresses was performed for three different loading conditions;assembly, thermal and gas loads. For the analysis of thermal boundary conditions also the temperature field had to be evaluated in a subsequent step.

  • The grain size effect on grain boyndary cracking in Pb-Sn eutectic during isothermal fatigue was investigated. Fatigue experiments were confined to two conditions : (1) 0.4% total strain range(approximetely 0.2% plastic strain range), 1.67$\times$10$^{-3}$/s frequency; and (2) 1.5% total strain rante(approximately 1.2% plastic strain range), 8.33$\times$10$^{-4}$/s frequency. Fatigue specimens were cross-sectioned to monitor the depth of crack growth continuosly and then, the maximum crack depths in units of the number of boundaries were plotted as functions of number of cycles for these two different strain ranges. The results revealed that the rate of crack growth(per cycle at fixed rate of crosshead motion) can be expressed as dc/dN=($\Delta$$\varepsilon$$_p$)$^n$c where n is typically 2, c is the crack length, $\Delta$$\varepsilon$$_p$ is the plastic strain range, and A is a "constant" that depends on whether the crack is deeper or shallower than its first triple point of the grain boundary, A decrdases by about a factor of three after the crack hits the first triple point, indecating that the fatigue crack is trapped at the triple point of the grain boundaries.

  • This study aims to accurately predict the first ply failure loads of laminated composite hypar shell roofs with different boundary conditions. The geometrically nonlinear finite element method (FEM) is used to analyse different symmetric and anti-symmetric, cross and angle ply shells. The first ply failure loads are obtained through different well-established failure criteria including Puck's criterion along with the serviceability criterion of deflection. The close agreement of the published and present results for different validation problems proves the correctness of the finite element model used in the present study. The effects of edge conditions on first ply failure behavior are discussed critically from practical engineering point of view. Factor of safety values and failure zones are also reported to suggest design and non-destructive monitoring guidelines to practicing engineers. Apart from these, the present study indicates the rank wise relative performances of different shell options. The study establishes that the angle ply laminates in general perform better than the cross ply ones. Among the stacking sequences considered here, three layered symmetric angle ply laminates offer the highest first ply failure load. The probable failure zones on the different shell surfaces, identified in this paper, are the areas where non-destructive health monitoring may be restricted to. The contributions made through this paper are expected to serve as important design aids to engineers engaged in composite hypar shell design and construction.

  • Injection-compression molding parts are many cases with complicated boundary condition which is difficult to analysis of mold characteristics precisely. In this study, the effects of various process parameters such as multi-point gate location, initial charge volume, injection time and pressure have been investigated using finite element method to fomulate the melt front advancement during the mold filling process. A general governing equation for tracking the filling process during injection-compression molding is applied to volume of fluid method. To verify the results of present analysis, they are compared with those of the other paper. The results show a strong effect of processing conditions as a result of variations in the three-dimensional complex geometry model.

  • We have written a code called QDM_sca, which numerically solves the problem of radiative transfer in an anisotropically scattering, spherical atmosphere. First we formulate the problem as a second order differential equation of a quasi-diffusion type. We then apply a three-point finite differencing to the resulting differential equation and transform it to a tri-diagonal system of simultaneous linear equations. After boundary conditions are implemented in the tri-diagonal system, the QDM_sca radiative code fixes the field of specific intensity at every point in the atmosphere. As an application example, we used the code to calculate the brightness of atmospheric diffuse light(ADL) as a function of zenith distance, which plays a pivotal role in reducing the zodiacal light brightness from night sky observations. On the basis of this ADL calculation, frequent uses of effective extinction optical depth have been fully justified in correcting the atmospheric extinction for such extended sources as zodiacal light, integrated starlight and diffuse galactic light. The code will be available on request.

  • This paper predicts the changes of natural frequencies due to the changes of mass at different point mass stations by using iterative calculation Transfer Matrices Method for different boundary conditions of a single beam structure (fixed-free and fixed-fixed beam). Firstly, the first three natural frequencies of an original beam are obtained using Transfer Matrices Method to verify the accuracy of the obtained results. The results are then compared with the exact solutions before purposely changing the parameter of mass. Both beams are modeled as discrete continuous systems with six-lumped-mass system. A single beam is broken down into a point mass and a massless beam which represent a single station and expressed in matrix form. The assembled matrices are used to determine the value of natural frequencies using numerical interpolation method corresponding to their mode number by manipulating some elements in the assembled matrix.

  • This paper deals with the analysis of the natural frequencies, mode shapes of an axially loaded beam system carrying ends consisting of non-concentrated tip masses and three spring-two mass sub-systems. The influence of system design and sub-system parameters on the combined system characteristics is the major part of this investigation. The effect of material properties, rotary inertia and shear deformation of the beam system is included. The end masses are elastically supported against rotation and translation at an offset point from the point of attachment. Sub-systems are attached to center of gravity eccentric points out of the beam span. The boundary conditions of the ordinary differential equation governing the lateral deflections and slope due to bending of the beam system including developed shear force frequency dependent terms, due to the sub.system suspension, have been formulated. Exact formulae for the modal frequencies and the modal shapes have been derived. Based on these formulae, detailed parametric studies are carried out. The geometrical and mechanical parameters of the system under study have been presented in non-dimensional analysis. The applied mathematical model is presented to cover wide range of mechanical, naval and structural engineering applications.

  • Employment of the wave propagation approach with the combination of Pasternak foundation equation gives birth to the shell frequency equation. Mathematically, the integral form of the Lagrange energy functional is converted into a set of three partial differential equations. A cylindrical shell is placed on the elastic foundation of Pasternak. For isotropic materials, the physical properties are same everywhere, whereas the laminated and functionally graded materials, they vary from point to point. Here the shell material has been taken as functionally graded material. The influence of the elastic foundation, wave number, length and height-to-radius ratios is investigated with different boundary conditions. The frequencies of length-to-radius and height-to-radius ratio are counter part of each other. The frequency first increases and gain maximum value in the midway of the shell length and then lowers down for the variations of wave number. It is found that due to inducting the elastic foundation of Pasternak, the frequencies increases. It is also exhibited that the effect of frequencies is investigated by varying the surfaces with stainless steel and nickel as a constituent material. MATLAB software is utilized for the vibration of functionally graded cylindrical shell with elastic foundation of Pasternak and the results are verified with the open literature.
