  • Although the aircraft industry was the first to use fibre composites, now they are increasingly used in a range of structural applications such as flooring, decking, platforms and roofs. Interlayer delamination is a major failure mode which threatens the reliability of composite structures. Delamination can grow in size under increasing loads with time and hence leads to severe loss of structural integrity and stiffness reduction. Delamination reduces the natural frequency and as a consequence may result in resonance. Hence, the study of the effects of delamination on the free vibration behaviour of multilayer composite structures is imperative. The focus of this paper is to develop a 3D FE model and investigate the free vibration behaviour of fibre composite multilayer sandwich panels with interlayer delaminations. A series of parametric studies are conducted to assess the influence of various parameters of concern, using a commercially available finite element package. Additionally, selected points in the delaminated region are connected appropriately to simulate bolting as a remedial measure to fasten the delamination region in the aim of reducing the effects of delamination. First order shear deformation theory based plate elements have been used to model each sandwich layer. The findings suggest that the delamination size and the end fixity of the plate are the most important factors responsible for stiffness reduction due to delamination damage in composite laminates. It is also revealed that bolting the delaminated region can significantly reduce the natural frequency variation due to delamination thereby improving the dynamic performance.

  • This work uses different finite element approaches to the free vibration analysis of reinforced shell structures, and a simplified model of a typical launcher with two boosters is used as an example. The results obtained using a refined one-dimensional (1D) beam model are compared to those obtained with commercial finite element software. The 1D models that are used in the present work are based on the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF), which assumes a variable kinematic displacement field over the cross-sections of the beam. Two different sets of polynomials that correspond to Taylor (TE) or Lagrange (LE) expansions were used. The analyses focused on three reinforced structures: a stiffened panel, a reinforced cylinder and the complete structure of the launcher. The frequencies and natural modes obtained using one-dimensional models are compared to those obtained from classical finite element analysis. The classical FE models were built using a beam-shell or solid elements, and the results indicate that the refined beam models can in fact be used to investigate the behavior of very complex reinforced structures. These models can predict the shell-like modes that are typical of thin-walled structures that cannot be detected using classical beam models. The refined 1D models used in the present work provide results that are as accurate as those from solid FE models, but the 1D models have a much lower computational cost.

  • In this paper, Moore-Gibson-Thompson theory of thermoelasticity is considered to investigate the fundamental solution and vibration of plane wave in an isotropic photothermoelastic solid. The governing equations are made dimensionless for further investigation. The dimensionless equations are expressed in terms of elementary functions by assuming time harmonic variation of the field variables (displacement, temperature distribution and carrier density distribution). Fundamental solutions are constructed for the system of equations for steady oscillation. Also some preliminary properties of the solution are explored. In the second part, the vibration of plane waves are examined by expressing the governing equation for two dimensional case. It is found that for the non-trivial solution of the equation yield that there exist three longitudinal waves which advance with the distinct speed, and one transverse wave which is free from thermal and carrier density response. The impact of various models (i)Moore-Gibson-Thomson thermoelastic (MGTE)(2019), (ii) Lord and Shulman's (LS)(1967) , (iii) Green and Naghdi type-II(GN-II)(1993) and (iv) Green and Naghdi type-III(GN-III)(1992) on the attributes of waves i.e., phase velocity, attenuation coefficient, specific loss and penetration depth are elaborated by plotting various figures of physical quantities. Various particular cases of interest are also deduced from the present investigations. The results obtained can be used to delineate various semiconductor elements during the coupled thermal, plasma and elastic wave and also find the application in the material and engineering sciences.

  • Dynamic response of axisymmetric arbitrary laminated composite cylindrical shell of finite length, using three-dimensional elasticity equations are studied. The shell is simply supported at both ends. The highly coupled partial differential equations are reduced to ordinary differential equations (ODE) with variable coefficients by means of trigonometric function expansion in axial direction. For cylindrical shell under dynamic load, the resulting differential equations are solved by Galerkin finite element method, In this solution, the continuity conditions between any two layer is satisfied. It is found that the difference between elasticity solution (ES) and higher order shear deformation theory (HSD) become higher for a symmetric laminations than their unsymmetric counterpart. That is due to the effect of bending-streching coupling. It is also found that due to the discontinuity of inplane stresses at the interface of the laminate, the slope of transverse normal and shear stresses aren't continuous across the interface. For free vibration analysis, through dividing each layer into thin laminas, the variable coefficients in ODE become constants and the resulting equations can be solved exactly. It is shown that the natural frequency of symmetric angle-ply are generally higher than their antisymmetric counterpart. Also the results are in good agreement with similar results found in literatures.

  • Objective: To correlate temporomandibular joint (TMJ) morphology and position with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, Joint Vibration Analysis (JVA), and Jaw Tracker (JT) to develop a radiation-free, dynamic method for screening and monitoring the TMJ in orthodontic patients. Methods: A total of 236 orthodontic patients without symptoms of TMJ disorders who had undergone CBCT were selected for the JVA and JT tests in this cross-sectional study. TMJ position and morphology were measured using a three-dimensional analysis software. JT measurements involved six opening-closing cycles, and JVA measurements were performed using a metronome to guide the mouth opening-closing movements of the patients. The correlations among the three measuring devices were evaluated. Results: Abnormalities in condylar surface morphology affected the mandibular range of motion. The cut-off value results show that when various measurement groups are within a certain range, abnormalities may be observed in morphology (area under the curve, 0.81; P < 0.001). A 300/< 300 Hz ratio ≥ 0.09 suggested abnormal morphology (P < 0.05). Correlations were observed among the maximum opening velocity, maximum vertical opening position, and joint spaces in the JT measurements. Correlations were also observed between the > 300/< 300 Hz ratio, median frequency, total integral, integral < 300 Hz, and peak frequency with joint spaces in the JVA measurements. Conclusions: JT and JVA may serve as rapid, non-invasive, and radiation-free dynamic diagnostic tools for monitoring and screening TMJ abnormalities before and during orthodontic treatment.
