  • The temperature and stress behaviour of mass concrete pier at early ages was analysed based on the finite element method. The pier investigated is a three-dimensional structure of which the cross-sectional shape varies from a circle to an ellipsoid along the longitudinal axis. In order to obtain the transient temperature and stress distributions in the structure, a three dimensional method was adopted, because the structure of this type cannot be modeled accurately by a two-dimensional method. Temperature analysis was performed by taking into consideration of the cement type and content, boundary and environment conditions including the variations of atmospheric temperature and wind velocity. The results of this study may be useful for the temperature control to restrain thermal cracking and the construction management to design the resonable curing method of mass concrete structure.

  • In the finite element analysis of metal forming processes, the updated Lagrangian approach has been widely and effectively used to simulate the non-steady state problems. However some difficulties have arisen from abrupt flow change as in extrusion through square dies. In the present work, a ALE(arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) finite element formulation for deformation analysis are presented for rigid viscoplastic materials. The developed finite element program is applied to the analysis of square die extrusion of a square section. The computational results are compared with those from the updated Lagrangian finite element analysis.

  • In the present study, three-dimensional finite element analysis was performed to investigate the effects of internal wall thinning defect on the failure pressure of elbow in the piping system and to develop the failure pressure evaluation model. From the results of finite element analysis, the failure pressure was derived by employing local stress criteria, and the effects of thinning location, bend radius, and defect geometry on the failure pressure of internally wall thinned elbow were investigated. Also, based on these investigations and previous model developed to estimate the failure pressure of elbow with an external pitting defect, the failure pressure evaluation model to be applicable to the elbow containing an internal thinning defect was proposed and compared with the results of finite element analysis. The failure pressure calculated by the model agreed well with the results of finite element analysis.

  • In this paper, we investigate the effect and the importance of the accuracy of finite element analysis in the shape optimization based on the finite element method and improve the existing finite element which has inaccuracy in some cases. And then, the shape optimization is performed by using the improved finite element. One of the main stream to improve finite element is the prevention of locking phenomenon. In case of bending dominant problems, finite element solutions cannot be reliable because of shear locking phenomenon. In the process of shape optimization, the mesh distortion is large due to the change of the structure outline. So, we have to raise the accuracy of finite element analysis for the large mesh distortion. We cannot guarantee the accurate result unless the finite element itself is accurate or the finite elements are remeshed. So, we approach to more accurate shape optimization to diminish these inaccuracies by improving the existing finite element. The shape optimization using the modified finite element is applied to a two and three dimensional simple beam. Results show that the modified finite element has improved the optimization results.

  • The objectives of this research are to evaluate the effect of the compressive strength of concrete, reinforcing bar size, spacing of column transverse bars related to the concrete confinement effects on anchorage bond strength and bond behavior of beam-column joints subjected to cyclic loading and to predict the bond behavior of beam-column joints according to the variables by Finite Element Analysis appling the interface element between concrete and reinforced bar surface in a three-dimensional configuration. This paper shows that to verify the results by three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis appling a interface element, the test results that were already conducted are compared with analytic results. The behavior of bond and anchorage of beam bar is expressed by a local bond stress-slip relationship and the failure mode of bond is predicted by principal stress contour.

  • This paper presents a numerical investigation of the mechanical behaviour of extended end - plate steel connections including comparison with full size experiments. Contact and friction laws have been taken into account with nonlinear, three dimensional finite element analysis. Material and geometric nonlinearities have been implemented to the model, as well. Results are then compared with experimental tests conducted at the Jordan University of Science and Technology. According to the most significant observation of the analysis, a separation of the column flange from the extended end - plate occurs. Other important structural parameters of the connection, like the impact of some column stiffeners on the overall response, local buckling of the column and friction of the beam to column interface, have been examined as well.

  • This paper presents analysis of the flows through three different types of radial compressor by using quasi-three-dimensional analysis method. The method obtains two-dimensional solution for velocity distribution on meridional plane, and then calculates approximately the static pressure distributions on blade surfaces. Finite difference method is used for the solutions of governing equations. The compressors have low level compression-ratio and 12 straight radial blades with no sweepback. The results are compared with experimental data and the results of inviscid analysis with finite element method. It can be concluded that the agreement is good for the cases where viscous effects are not dominant.

  • This study was intended to provide efficient algorithms for high quality postprocess on the basis of microcomputers with limited capacity and functionality. Improved methods of postprocessing including stress contouring, internal force diagraming, and displacement animation, were proposed and implemented into a new finite element system. Visualization of three-dimensional structural behaviors was treated with special emphasis.
