  • Six new species of copepods associated with polychaetes are described from Korea. Included are Indoclausia bipartita n. sp., Clausia parva n. sp., and Maxilliclausia propria n. gen. n. sp. in the Clausiidae; Pseudanthessius excertus n. sp. in the Pseudanthessiidae; and Polyankylis ovilaxa n. sp. and Sewelloya plana n. gen. n. sp. in the Polyankyliidae. The new genus Maxilliclausia has a peculiar maxilla in which the distal segment forms a sucking disk, a non-prehensile antenna, vestigial legs 3 and 5, and lacks a maxilliped and leg 4. The two new species of the Polyankyllidae are discovered as external associates of terebellid polychaetes. The new genus Sewelloya has a simple female maxilliped bearing only two small setae on its terminal segment, an uniramous leg 4 bearing 1-segmented exopod, and a reduced leg 5 represented by three setae. The genera Terebelliphilus Kim, 2001 which was originally placed in the Sabelliphilidae, and Octophiophora Stock, 1988 and Stockia Sebastian and Pillai, 1974, both of the latters with uncertain familial positions, are transferred to the Polyankyliidae. A key to five genera of the Polyankyliidae are provided.

  • Primary central nervous system (CNS) melanoma is a rare condition that accounts for only 1% of all melanomas. A 34-year-old Korean female presented with a two-month history of progressive weakness in both legs. Spinal magnetic resonance image (MRI) revealed a spinal cord tumor at the level of T4, which was hyperintense on T1-weighted imaging and hypointense on T2-weighted imaging. The intradural and extramedullary tumor was completely resected and diagnosed as melanoma. There were no metastatic lesions. At three years after surgery, the patient is still alive, with no evidence of tumor recurrence. We present the details of this case along with a comprehensive review of spinal cord melanoma.

  • In general a thermoelectric cooler (TEC) consists of a series of P type and N type thermoelectric materials sandwiched between two wafers. When a DC current passes through these materials, three different effects take place; Peltier effect, Joule heating effect and heat transfer by conduction due to temperature difference between hot and cold plates. In this study we have developed a micro TEC using $Bi_2Te_3$ (N type) and $Bi_{0.5}Sb_{1.5}Te_3$ (P type) thin films. In order to improve that performance of a micro TEC, we made 10 um height TE legs using special PR only for lift-off. We measured COP (coefficient of performance) and temperature difference between hot and cold connectors with current.

  • Several differences are revealed in the segmentation and setation of the antennule, maxillule, maxilliped and fifth legs between three genera of the family Metridinidae, Metridia, Pleuromamma, and Gaussia. The phylogenetic relationships are cladistically analyzed on the basis of 10 morphological characters. The cladogram shows that Gaussia and Pleuromamma form a sister group, with Metridia which is the first branch to diverge within the family. The presence Of quadritheks on the male antennules of Metridia and Pleuromamma seems to be an important synapomorphy. The loss of quadritheks in Gaussia represents likely evidence of a character reversal into the ancestral condition.

  • The population of diabetes is continuously increasing because of the economic development and the lifestyle modification. If diabetes become chronic condition, it can cause various complications. Among many other complications, diabetic foot is the most fatal issue since it may require amputation of the legs. Diabetic foot has three different types such as neuropathic, neuro-ischemic and ischemic. Among these types, patients of neuropathic foot experience sensory abnormality. Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) is used for diagnosing neuropathic foot but this method uses strong electric stimulus to cause severe pain to the patients In this study, two channel photo-plethysmography was used as noninvasive screening tool for distinguish neuropathic foot and normal group by observing blood flow of both finger and toe simultaneously.

  • This paper investigated the symptoms of taxi drivers' physical self-consciousness. As the subjects for the study, 374 taxi drivers participated in the survey for three months, and its result showed as follows:1. In the items of the physical symptoms, the eye's fatigue was indicated as a greatest complaint, and the corporate-taxi drivers showed a higher complaint rate than the owner-taxi drivers. 2. The survey also indicated that taxi drivers over 50 years old showed the highest complaining rate of eye's fatigue, shoulder pain, loins pain, and severe headache. Feelings of burning on empty stomach was the highest complaint factor in the age group between 30 and 39 years old, and pain and burning feelings in eyes in the age group between 20 and 29 years old.3. In the study of the complaining rate of physical symptoms by working hours, the nighttime driers complained of their self-consciousness symptoms of leg and knee pain, shoulder pain, benumbed legs, and these drivers also showed a relatively high complaint rate resulting from the responsibility of living expenses.

  • This paper is concerned with computer simulations of a biped robot walking in dynamic gaits. To this end, a three-dimensional robot is considered possessing a torso and two identical legs of a kinematically ingenious design. Specific walking patterns are off-line generated meeting stability based on the ZMP condition. Subsequently, to verify whether the robot can walk as planned, a multi-body dynamics CAE code has been applied to the corresponding joint motions determined by inverse kinematics. In this manner, complex mass effects could be accurately evaluated for the robot model. As a result, key parameters to successful gaits are identified including inherent characteristics as well. Also, joint actuator capacities are found required to carry out those gaits.

  • This paper presents a novel system that analyzes and recognizes a gait based on shape context on silhouette images. The main functions of the system consist of three steps: First, the system extracts the silhouette images from galt image sequence by performing a simple pre-processing and acquires the AGM(Averaged Gait Map) by averaging them. Next. it computes the cross-correlation between the AGMs. Finally, it classifies the AGMs based on the cross-correlation using nearest neighborhood classification. The proposed system uses two cues to classify a gait: One corresponds to biometric shape cue such as body height width. and body-part proportions. The other corresponds to gait cue such as stride length and amount of arm swing. Perceptionally, the biometric cues are sailent on the double support (both legs spread and touching the ground) while the gait cues on the midstance. Through a variety of experiments, it is proved that the property of a gait is mainly influenced by gait cues than biometric cues.

  • The expandable implant employs an inner expansion screw in order to expand several legs of implant. Compressive stresses are produced at the bone tissue surrounding the implant, and the contact area between the implant and the bone tissue is increased, which result in increased resistance to horizontal and vertical pressure loads. The stress distribution in implant is also an important factor. Three types of implant models including an existing one have been investigated by using the Finite Element Method, and an improved design model has been suggested.

  • This paper is concerned with computer simulations of a biped robot walking in static and dynamic gaits. To this end, a three-dimensional robot is considered possessing a torso and two identical legs of a typical design. For such limbs, a set of inverse kinematic solutions is analytically derived between the torso and the feet. Specific walking patterns are off-line generated meeting stability based on the VPCG or ZMP condition. Subsequently, to verify whether the robot can walk as planned in the presence of mass and ground effects, a multi-body dynamics CAE code has been applied to the resulting joint motions determined by inverse kinematics. As a result, the key parameters to successful gaits could be identified including inherent characteristics as well. Upon comparisons between the two types of gaits, dynamic gaits are concluded more desirable for larger humaniods.
