  • Marine structures are often in contact with inner or outer fluid as stern, ballast and oil tanks. The effect of interaction between fluid and structure has to be taken into consideration when we estimate the dynamic response of the structure appropriately. Fatigue damages can also be sometimes observed in these tanks which seem to be caused by resonance. Thin walled tank structures in ships which are in contact with water and located near engine or propeller where vibration characteristics are strongly affected by the added mass of containing water. Therefore it is essentially important to estimate the added mass effect to predict vibration characteristics of tank structures. But it is difficult to estimate exactly the magnitude of the added mass because this is a fluid-structure interaction problem and is affected by the free surface, vibration modes of structural panels and the depth of water. I have developed a numerical tool of vibration analysis of 3-dimensional tank structure using finite elements for plates and boundary elements for fluid region. In the present study, the effect of added mass of containing water, the effect of structural constraint between panels on the vibration characteristics are investigated numerically and discussed. Especially a natural frequencies by the fluid interaction between 2 panels and a breath mode of the water tank are focused on.

  • This paper aims to evaluate quantitatively the springback characteristics that evolve in the sheet metal forming of an S-rail in order to understand the reasons of shape inaccuracy and to find a remedy. The geometrical springback is classified into six modes: angle change of punch and die shoulders, wall curl, ridge curl, section twist, and axial twist. The measuring method for each springback mode is suggested and quantitative measurements were made to determine the tendency towards shape accuracy. Forming experiments were conducted with four types of steel sheets that have different tensile strengths, which were 340MPa, 440MPa, 590MPa and 780MPa, in order to evaluate the effect of the tensile strength and the bead shape on the springback behavior. Springback tendencies show that they are greatly affected by the tensile strength of the sheet and the shape of the tools. Almost all springback modes except the section twist and the axial twist show a linearly increasing trend as the tensile strength of the sheet increases. The results can be used as basic data for design and for compensation of the press die geometry when forming high strength steels which exhibit large amounts of springback.

  • This paper studies the influence of internal moving fluid and flow-induced structural instability of multi-wall carbon nanotubes conveying fluid. Detailed results are demonstrated for the variation of natural frequencies with flow velocity, and the flow-induced divergence and flutter instability characteristics of multi-wall carbon nanotubes conveying fluid and modelled as a thin-walled beam are investigated. Effects of various boundary conditions, Van der Waals forces, and non-classical transverse shear and rotary inertia are incorporated in this study. The governing equations and three different boundary conditions are derived through Hamilton's principle. Numerical analysis is performed by using extended Galerkin's method which enables us to obtain more exact solutions compared with conventional Galerkin's method. This paper also presents the comparison between the characteristics of single-wall and multi-wall carbon nanotubes considering the effect of van der Waals forces. Variations of critical flow velocity for different boundary conditions of two-wall carbon nanotubes are investigated and pertinent conclusion is outlined.

  • The free vibration and stability analysis of a spinning composite shaft modelled as a thin-walled closed beam is performed for several design parameters, such as ply angle, aspect ratio, and spin speed. The governing equations of spinning shafts based on the Timoshenko beam theory are derived via Hamilton's variational principle. Coriolis acceleration and anisotropy of constituent materials are incorporated in the derivation. The equations of motion are then transformed to the standard form of an eigenvalue problem for free vibration and stability analysis. Analytical results both for uniform circular cylindrical shaft and rectangular cross-section shaft are obtained by using extended Galerkin method, and the results are compared with those from FEM ANSYS analysis for a verification.

  • Pygmaeopremna herbacea (Roxb.) Mold. (Verbenaceae) is a small herb or sometimes an undershrub arising from a perennial rootstock. The dry roots are dark muddy brown in colour having root nodules. Its extensively developed roots are widely used in tribal medicine. They are used as an aphrodisiac and for the treatment of gout, rheumatism and ulcers. This study deals with the detailed pharmacognostical evaluation of the dried roots and root nodules of P. herbacea which includes macro and microscopic studies, determination of physicochemical parameters and chemoprofiling of the extract using HPTLC fingerprint profiles. It was observed that the roots consist of a well developed cortical region consisting of tangentially elongated thin walled parenchymatous cells and contain polygonal stone cells as well as compound starch grains. Also the pith was parenchymatous. The HPTLC fingerprint profile of the methanolic extract showed the presence of seven major bands. Such an analysis may thus be utilized in identifying P. herbacea and in differenciating it from other species which are similar to it or are used as its adultrants/substitutes under the same vernacular name of Bharangi.

  • This paper presents the development process of automotive side door impact beam for passenger cars. Weight reduction while maintaining functional requirements is one of the major goals in the automotive industry. In this study, thin-walled side door beam using quenchable boron steel was designed to reduce the weight of conventional side door tubular one. In order to estimate design for the proposed side door beams, the static side impact protection tests(FMVSS 214) were conducted using the finite element method. Based on the simulation results, geometry modification of the side door beam has been performed via creating new reinforcing ribs. Furthermore, the manufactured frontal impact beam was mounted on the real side door of a passenger car, and then static impact protection test carried out. It is concluded that the presented test results can provide significant contribution to the stiffness of side door impact beams and light-weighting door research.

  • The bronchogenic cysts result from an abnormal budding or branching of the tracheo-bronchial tree from the primitive foregut. Bronchogenic cysts may be pulmonary or mediastinal. The most common location for a mediastinal bronchogenic cyst is in relation to the carina. They are usually solitary. They usually are thin walled and contain fluid that is most often clear. The cyst is lined by ciliated columnar epithelium. The bronchogenic cyst i~ usually asymptomatic. They can cause pressure symptoms. When they become infected, symptoms do occur. We report 3 cases of bronchogenic cysts experienced at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Kyungpook National University Hospital. Case I, a man of 20 year-old, had a cyst at the site between aortic arch and left pulmonary artery. He complained cough and dyspnea. The cyst wasn`t communicated with tracheobronchial tree. Case II was 55-year-old male who had had hemoptysis. A huge cyst was located within the lower lobe of left lung and removed by pulmonary lobectomy. There were not any symptoms in Case III that was 6-year old girl. That cyst was located just next to the right main bronchus.

  • In this work, the effect of composite couplings and mass distributions on hub loads of a hingeless rotor in forward flight is investigated. The hingeless composite rotor is idealized as a laminated thin-walled box-beam. The nonclassical effects such as transverse shear and torsion warping are considered In the structural formulation. The nonlinear differential equations of motion are obtained by applying Hamilton’s principle. The blade responses and hub loads are calculated using a finite element formulation both in space and time. The aerodynamic forces acting on the blade are calculated using the quasi-steady strip theory. The theory includes the effects of reversed flow and compressibility. The magnitude of elastic couplings obtained by MSC/NASTRAN is compared with the classical pitch-flap($\delta$$_3$) coupling. It Is observed that the elastic couplings and mass distributions of the blade have a substantial effect on the behavior of $N_{b}$ /rev hub loads. About 40% hub loads is reduced by tailoring or redistributing the structural properties of the blade.e.

  • Structural aspects of highly reduced vegetative organs in the aquatic Spirodela polyrhiza were examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The study focused mainly on young and mature fronds with turions and their cellular features were compared. Mature fronds were composed of thin-walled chlorenchyma with highly vacuolated cells; most of which were frequently occupied by either tanniferous deposits or various crystals. Fronds of photoautotrophic offspring were produced from the meristematic region of the reproductive pockets within mother fronds, where they remained until separation. Moderate degrees of wall ingrowth and plasmalemma proliferation were detected briefly in the epidermis of daughter fronds during early development. Vascular tissues were generally much reduced, but air chambers were well-established in fronds. Chloroplasts having grana with several thylakoids were distributed throughout the plant, but starch grains were encountered frequently in the mesophyll chloroplasts of younger fronds and initial stage of the turion. Their cytoplasm was dense with small vacuoles in most cases. Further, big starch grains, up to several microns, occupying most of the plastid volume were formed in the turion prior to sink for overwintering. Plasmodesmata were numerous in the examined tissues, except mature turions, suggesting a symplastic pathway of the metabolites within body.
