In this study, on-site testing was carried out to investigate the vibration performance of a cold-formed thin-walled steel floor system. Ambient vibration, walking excitation (single and double persons), and impulsive excitation (heel-drop and jumping) were considered to capture the primary vibration parameters (natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes) and vertical acceleration response. Meanwhile, to discuss the influence of cement fiberboard on structural vibration, the primary vibration parameters were compared between the systems with and without the installation of cement fiberboard. Based on the experimental analysis, the cold-formed thin-walled steel floor possesses high frequency (> 10 Hz) and damping (> 2%); the installed cement fiberboard mainly increases the mass of floor system without effectively increasing the floor stiffness and may reduce the effects of primary vibration parameters on acceleration response; and the human-structure interaction should be considered when analyzing the vibration serviceability. The comparison of the experimental results with those in the AISC Design Guide indicates that the cold-formed thin-walled steel floor exhibits acceptable vibration serviceability. A crest factor 𝛽rp (ratio of peak to root-mean-square accelerations) is proposed to determine the root-mean-square acceleration for convenience.

The desktop-level 3D printing machines makes it easier for independent designers to produce collectible models. Desktop 3D printers that use FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) technology usually use a minimum nozzle diameter of 0.4mm. When using FDM printers to make Gunpla models, Thin slice structures are prone to slicing errors, which lead to deformation of printed objects and reduction in structural strength. This paper aims to analyze the printing model that produces errors, control a single variable among the three variables of slice layer height, slice wall thickness and filament type for comparative testing, and find a way to avoid gaps. To provide assistance for using FDM printers to build models containing thin-walled structures.
The foam-filled tube beams can be used for the front rail and firewall structures to absorb impact energy during frontal or side collision of vehicles. In the case of side collision where bending is involved in the crushing mechanism, the foam filler would be effective in maintaining progressive crushing of the thin-walled structures so that much impact energy could be absorbed. In this study, bending behaviors of the closed-cell-aluminum-alloy-foam-filled stainless steel tube were investigated. The various foam-filled specimens including piecewise fillers were prepared and tested. The aluminum-alloy-foam filling offered the significant increase of bending resistance. Their suppression of the inward fold formation at the compression flange as well as the multiple propagating folds led to the increase of load carrying capacity of specimens. Moreover, the piecewise foams would provide the easier way to fill the thin-walled shell structures without the drawback of strength.
In the present study, the effect of geometrical parameters of two different types of aluminum thin-walled structures on energy absorption under three-bending impact loading has been investigated experimentally and numerically. To evaluate the effect of parameters on the specific energy absorption (SEA), initial peak crushing force (IPCF), and the maximum crushing distance (δ), a design of experiment technique (DOE) with response surface method (RSM) was applied. Four different thin-walled structures have been tested under the low-velocity impact, and then they have simulated by ABAQUS software. An acceptable consistency between the numerical and experimental results was obtained. In this study, statistical analysis has been performed on various parameters of three different types of tubes. In the first and the second statistical analysis, the dimensional parameters of the cross-section, the number of holes, and the dimensional parameter of holes were considered as the design variables. The diameter reduction rate and the number of sections with different diameters are related to the third statistical analysis. All design points of the statistical method have been simulated by the finite element package, ABAQUS/Explicit. The final result shows that the height and thickness of tubes were more effective than other geometrical parameters, and despite the fact that the deformations of the cylindrical tubes were around forty percent greater than the rectangular tubes, the top desirability was relevant to the cylindrical tubes with reduced cross-sections.
Titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) has excellent mechanical properties and high specific strength; therefore, it is widely used in aerospace, automobile, defense, engine parts, and bio fields. Particularly in the aerospace field, as it has a low specific gravity and rigidity, it is used for the purpose of increasing energy efficiency through weight reduction of parts, and most have a thin-walled structure. However, it is extremely difficult to machine thin-walled shapes owing to vibration and deformation. In the case of thin-walled structures, the cutting forces and vibrations rapidly increase depending on the cutting conditions, significantly affecting the surface integrity and tool life. In this study, machining experiments on thin-wall milling of a titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) were conducted for each experimental condition with different axial depths of cut, radial depth of cut, and machining sequence. The machining characteristics were analyzed, and an effective machining method was derived by a comprehensive analysis of the machined surface conditions and cutting signals.
Buckling is one of the major causes of failure in thin-walled plate members and the presence of cracks with different lengths and locations in such structures may adversely affect this phenomenon. This study focuses on the buckling stability assessment of centrally and non-centrally cracked plates with small-, intermediate-, and large-size cracks, and different aspect ratios as well as support conditions, subjected to uniaxial compression. To this end, numerical models of the cracked plates were created through singular finite element method using a computational code developed in MATLAB. Eigen-buckling analyses were also performed to study the stability behavior of the plates. The numerical results and findings of this research demonstrate the effectiveness of the crack length and location on the buckling capacity of thin plates; however, the degree of efficacy of these parameters in plates with various aspect ratios and support conditions is found to be significantly different. Overall, careful consideration of the aspect ratio, support conditions, and crack parameters in buckling analysis of plates is crucial for efficient stability design and successful application of such thin-walled members.
Methods for predicting the ultimate/buckling strength of ship structures have been extensively improved in terms of design formulas and analytical solutions. In recent years, the design strategy of ships and offshore structures has tended to emphasize lighter builds and improve operational safety. Therefore, the corresponding geometrical changes in design necessitate the use of high-tensile steel and thin plates. However, the existing design formulas were mainly developed for thick plates and mild steels. Therefore, the calculation methods require appropriate modification for new designs beased on high-tensile steel and thin plates. In this study, a modified formula was developed to predict the ultimate strength of thin steel plates subjected to compressive and shear loads. Based on the numerical results, the effects of the yield stress, slenderness ratio, and loading condition on the buckling/ultimate strength of steel plates were examined, and a newly modified double-beta parameter formula was developed. The results were used to derive and modify existing closed-form expressions and empirical formulas to predict the ultimate strength of thin-walled steel structures.
This paper presents the experimental and numerical study on the distribution of transverse and longitudinal residual stresses in cold-formed thick-walled structural steel rectangular hollow sections manufactured by indirect technique. Hole-drilling method is employed to measure the magnitude of the transverse and longitudinal surface residual stress distribution, and the effects of the residual stresses are evaluated qualitatively by sectioning method. It is shown that compared to normal cold-formed thin-walled structural hollow sections (SHS), the cold-formed thick-walled SHS has similar level of residual stress in the flat area but higher residual stresses in the corner and welding areas. Both the transverse and longitudinal residual stresses tend to open the section. In order to predict the surface residual stresses in the corners of the cold-formed thick-walled SHS, an analytical model is developed. 2D finite element simulation of the cold bending process is conducted to validate the analytical approach. It is shown that in analyzing bending for thick-walled sections, shifting of neutral axis must be considered, since it would lead to nonlinear and non-symmetrical distribution of stresses through the thickness. This phenomenon leads to the fact that cold-formed thick-walled SHSs has different distribution and magnitude of the residual stresses from the cold-formed thin-walled SHSs.

Reinforced and prestressed concrete (RC and PC) thin walls are crucial to the safety and serviceability of structures subjected to shear. The shear strengths of elements in walls depend strongly on the softening of concrete struts in the principal compression direction due to the principal tension in the perpendicular direction. The past three decades have seen a rapid development of knowledge in shear of reinforced concrete structures. Various rational models have been proposed that are based on the smeared-crack concept and can satisfy Navier's three principles of mechanics of materials (i.e., stress equilibrium, strain compatibility and constitutive laws). The Cyclic Softened Membrane Model (CSMM) is one such rational model developed at the University of Houston, which is being efficiently used to predict the behavior of RC/PC structures critical in shear. CSMM for RC has already been implemented into finite element framework of OpenSees (Fenves 2005) to come up with a finite element program called Simulation of Reinforced Concrete Structures (SRCS) (Zhong 2005, Mo et al. 2008). CSMM for PC is being currently implemented into SRCS to make the program applicable to reinforced as well as prestressed concrete. The generalized program is called Simulation of Concrete Structures (SCS). In this paper, the CSMM for RC/PC in material scale is first introduced. Basically, the constitutive relationships of the materials, including uniaxial constitutive relationship of concrete, uniaxial constitutive relationships of reinforcements embedded in concrete and constitutive relationship of concrete in shear, are determined by testing RC/PC full-scale panels in a Universal Panel Tester available at the University of Houston. The formulation in element scale is then derived, including equilibrium and compatibility equations, relationship between biaxial strains and uniaxial strains, material stiffness matrix and RC plane stress element. Finally the formulated results with RC/PC plane stress elements are implemented in structure scale into a finite element program based on the framework of OpenSees to predict the structural behavior of RC/PC thin-walled structures subjected to earthquake-type loading. The accuracy of the multiscale modeling technique is validated by comparing the simulated responses of RC shear walls subjected to reversed cyclic loading and shake table excitations with test data. The response of a post tensioned precast column under reversed cyclic loads has also been simulated to check the accuracy of SCS which is currently under development. This multiscale modeling technique greatly improves the simulation capability of RC thin-walled structures available to researchers and engineers.
The reliable prediction of elastic vibrations of wetted complex structures, as ships, tanks, offshore structures, propulsion components etc. represent a theoretical and numerical demanding task due to fluid-structure interaction. The paper presented is addressed to the vibration analysis by a combined FE-BE-procedure based on the added mass concept utilizing a direct boundary integral formulation of the potential fluid problem in interior and exterior domains. The discretization is realized by boundary element collocation method using conventional as well as infinite boundary element formulation with analytical integration scheme. Particular attention is devoted to modelling of interior problems with both several separate or communicating fluid domains as well as thin-walled structures wetted on both sides. To deal with this specific kind of interaction problems so-called "virtual" boundary elements in areas of cut outs are placed to satisfy the kinematical conditions in partial connected fluid domains existing in realistic tank systems. Numerical results of various theoretical and practical examples demonstrate the performance of the BE-methodology presented.
