  • In this study, research was conducted into the manufacture of thermally expandable microspheres for automotive underbody coatings and applications in industry. In particular, the relationship between heat resistance and the ratio of crosslinking agents and initiators in the manufacture of the thermally expandable microspheres was investigated. We focused on the results with various cross-linking agents; our aim was to make the walls of the microspheres thicker to solve the problem of reductions in size caused by shrinkage when the microspheres are heated to $T_m$ ($T_{max}$). We observed the sectional thickness and surface of the samples with thicker walls. The thick thermally expandable microspheres showed reduced shrinkage and excellent stability in spite of prolonged exposure to heat.

  • Washable wool was developed using environmental-friendly spray UV-cure technique. Photocrosslinkable polymer, dextran-methacrylate, was synthesized starting from natural biopolymer, dextran. The aqueous solution of dextran-methacrylate was applied to wool fabric with various concentrations to find out the optimum condition in minimizing felting shrinkage. The wool fabric subsequently cured by 365 nm UV, The effects of UV-cure time and photoinitiator concentration on felting behavior of wool were examined. As the concentration of dextran-methacrylate increased, the felting shrinkage decreased gradually. At concentration 0.5g/ml, the felting shrinkage of wool was negligible. Other properties such as air permeability, moisture content, wrinkle recovery, thickness and wettability were also evaluated. The surface coating of dextran polymer onto wool fiber was identified by SEM.

  • During stereolithography processes, one of the main sources of dimensional error of prototype is the distortion effect owing to the shrinkage of resin. In this study, the effects of dimension of specimen, such as length, width, and thickness, on the curl distortion is examined. During the SL processes, the variation of curl distortion ewer is measured according to the number of layers, Through this study, it is verified that there is a big difference of the distortion error in both direction and magnitude between before and after the supports are removed. It Is also observed that end profile of the test part and the upper side around the border are also distorted due to the shrinkage of the resin.

  • Recently, with the increase in the construction of ultra-high buildings and long-span structures, there is great demand for high-strength concrete which can reduce the structural weight and thickness of member sections. While developing high-strength concrete to meet performance requirements, certain issues at the design stage must also be considered. The issues include diseconomy from a great amount of per-unit cement, spalling failure by fire at ultra-high building, autogenous shrinkage caused by increased hydration activity of binder from use of a superplasticizer. Therefore, the purpose of this study is examined the strain characteristics of Fiber-reinforced-high-strength concrete(FRHSC), which differ from those of general concrete owing to autogenous shrinkage. Based on the experimental data, we proposed an autogenous shrinkage prediction model.

  • This study examined the cause of the phenomenon of shrinkage in machine-embroidered fabrics, specifically those made of thin and pliable fabrics. Four woven fabrics and two knitted fabrics were selected as samples for analysis. The fabrics selected were silk organza, flax linen, polyester chiffon, cotton batiste, polyester raschel mesh, and cotton jersey. The thickness and drapability of the fabrics were observed and the shrinkage of the various types of embroidered fabrics produced using satin & step stitch techniques were measured. Moreover, the correlation between the shrinkage of the machine-embroidered fabrics and the drapability of the original fabrics was analyzed. Also, the colorfastness of six embroidery yarns was determined. The results of the study are as follows: first, the shrinkage of machine-embroidered fabrics increased at a greater rate than in embroidered knitted fabrics as compared to rates in embroidered woven fabrics. Moreover, in terms of stitch techniques, there was a greater shrinkage rate when satin stitch was applied compared to step stitch. Second, the shrinkage rate of machine-embroidered fabrics decreased when a stabilizer was fused onto the fabric. The shrinkage rate also decreased for fabrics when fused with paper stabilizer compared to those without it, and the rate decreased at a greater amount with paper stabilizer as compared to alginate film. Third, since there was a strong correlation between the shrinkage rate of the embroidered fabric and the drapability ratio of the original fabric, it was generally the case that the more pliable the fabric was, the greater the shrinkage rate was when the fabric was embroidered. Fourth, while the embroidery yarns mainly used in machine-embroidery presented an overall excellent level of colorfastness, there was slight color migration of level 4 to level 5 when using viscose rayon.
