  • In order to improve the mechanical properties and fracture toughness of HPT 1071/DDS system, poly(aryl etherimide) (PEI) was incorporated in the resin system. In HPT 1071/DDS system, mechanical properties of cured epoxy resins were not strongly dependent on the concentration of DDS curing agent strongly. In the case of HPT 1071/DDS/PEI system, the fracture toughness and flexural properties of epoxy resins increased with increasing the concentration of PEI. SEM micrographs of cured epoxy resin indicated that the phase separation occured at the low concentration of PEI in this system. In addition, investigation of the relationship between mechanical properties and the morphology of modified epoxy resin was undertaken in HPT 1071/DDS/PEI system.

  • This paper presents the mechanical properties of a composite consisting of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resin mixed with carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) pieces (CFRP/ABS). CFRP pieces made by crushing CFRP wastes were utilized in this material. Nine kinds of CFRP/ABS compounds with different weight fraction and size of CFRP pieces were prepared. Firstly, tensile and flexural tests were performed for the specimens with various CFRP content. Next, fracture surfaces of the specimens were microscopically observed to investigate fracture behavior and fiber/resin interface. Finally, the tensile modulus and strength were discussed based on the macromechanical model. It is found that the elastic modulus increases linearly with increasing CFRP content while the strength changes nonlinearly. Microscopic observation revealed that most carbon fibers are separated individually and dispersed homogeneously in ABS resin. Epoxy resin particles originally from CFRP are dispersed in ABS resin and seem to be in good contact with surrounding resin. The modulus and strength can be expressed using a macromechanical model taking account of fiber orientation, length and interfacial bonding in short fiber composites.

  • The application as the parts of an automobile, using the property of GMT-Sheet, is increasing. In order to exchange the parts of an automobile for GMT-Sheet, at first, the establishment and problem of exact joining strength must be determined. We have studied it using composites which is not same each other fiber oriented condition so as to determine joining strength and joining condition of GMT-Sheet. In this study, the result of experiment of forming condition concerned joining problem of GMT-Sheet is this; joining efficiency of GMT-Sheet, increases as lap joint length L increases. Increase of compression ratio causes decrease of joining efficiency after of GMT-Sheet joining. In the viewpoint of recycling, randomly oriented composite of GMT-Sheet is desirable more than unidirectional oriented composite. We has better design the structure so as not to occur to stress centralization on the joining part.

  • Permeability to gases and vapors is an important function in tires, rubber tubes and diaphragms. It mainly depends on the rubber material. Generally, permeability increases in the following order: silicone rubber > NR > EPDM > SBR > NBR > FPM > ECO > IIR. And, for an elastomer permeability is also very much dependent on compounding. Many research works are reported in the area of gas permeability for formed rubber,$^{1-7}$ however, few studies are found for unformed elastomer products. Incorporation of nano-particles, use of thermoplastic elastomers and applying high barrier multilayer coatings are the main approaches to obtain a high barrier elastomeric product. In this paper, barrier article for vehicle is introduced.

  • Recently supramolecular network thermo-reversible crosslinking elastomer having flexibility, various functionality, and advantages of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) such as recycle and easy processbility is introduced. Although thermo-reversible bonds such as hydrogen bond and ionic cluster is recognized as a common technology since 1990, control technology of bonding and dissociation of crosslink in supramolecular network is a recent technology. In this review, characteristics of thermo-reversible crosslinking elastomer having rheological properties of TPE and reinforcing behaviors of thermoset elastomer are summarized.

  • Environmentally friendly biocomposites were made using plant-based natural fibers, such as henequen and kenaf. The natural fiber reinforced polypropylene (PP) and unsaturated polyester (UP) biocomposites were examined in terms of the reinforcing effect of natural fibers on thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers. Kenaf (KE) and henequen (HQ) fibers were treated with an electron beam (EB) of 10 and 200 kGy doses, respectively, or with a 5 wt% NaOH solution. Four types of biocomposites (KE/PP, HQ/PP, KE/UP and HQ/UP) were fabricated by compression molding and each biocomposite was characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. The kenaf fiber had the larger reinforcing effect on the dynamic mechanical properties of both PP and UP biocomposites than the henequen fiber. The highest storage modulus was obtained from the biocomposite with the combination of UP matrix and 200 kGy EB treated kenaf fibers.

  • Sandwich composites of carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) and polymer foam will be used to automobile and aerospace industry according to increasing importance of light weight. In this study, mechanical and heat resistance properties of sandwich composites were compared with type of polymer foam (polyethylene terephthalate(PET), polyvinylchloride(PVC), epoxy and polyurethane). All types of polymer foams were degraded to 30, 60, 120, 180 minutes in $180^{\circ}C$. After heat degradation, the polymer foams were observed using optical microscope and compressive test was performed using universal testing machine(UTM). Epoxy foam had the highest compressive property to 2.6 MPa and after thermal degradation, the mechanical property and structure of foam were less changed than others. Epoxy foam had better mechanical properties than other polymer foams under high temperature. Because the epoxy foam was post cured under high temperature. As the results, Epoxy foam was optimal materials to apply to structures that thermal energy was loaded constantly.

  • Fiber arrangement was important for fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites using injection fabrication. In this work, fiber arrangement in CF/PP was investigated to use electrical resistance (ER) method during injection times. There were 3 types of injection products of CF/PP with different ER change ratio by fiber arrangement. High ER change ratio case of injection CF/PP products had better increased tensile strength. This reason was due to the fiber arrangement of CF/PP by injection. Fractured surface and contact angle of CF/PP products were used to evaluate for injection product quality. Uniform fiber arrangement of CF/PP by injection type exhibited the uniform heat condition of melted CF/PP. Steady thermal transfer effect occurred from melted CF/PP to steel injection mold. Steady thermal transfer effect of CF/PP was transmitted to high ER change ratio of mold. Ultimately, good condition CF/PP product by injection molding method could be predicted by using ER method.

  • In order to improve the mechanical properties of jute fiber/polypropylene(PP) composites, the property change with the addition of a coupling agent, maleic anhydride polypropylene(MAPP) was examined experimentally. The maleated coupler acts as an intermediate to chemically connect the polar nature of the fiber and non-polar nature of the polyolefin polymer resin. Furthermore, the decrease in viscosity of the resin which results from the melting point reduction by the MAPP, leads to an increase of contact area with the fiber interface. We discussed the improvement of the PP composite blend of the maleated coupler with the 80mm jute long fiber mat in conjunction with the change of physical parameters in the thermoplastic resin. We confirmed the extent of contribution to the mechanical physical enhancement by using the following parameters: melting flow index(MI) and viscosity, contact angle, thickness of the composite, interfacial shear strength and morphology observation etc. Especially it was observed that the MI and viscosity, MAPP mixture had a very strong relationship with the tensile and flexural strength and modulus, and interfacial shear strength(IFSS).

  • The effect of nanoscopic and microscopic Fe, $Fe_3O_4$, and Ni particles and their shapes and substrate materials on the heating behavior of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) adhesive films was investigated via induction heating. The heat generation tendency of $Fe_3O_4$ particles was higher than that shown by Fe and Ni particles in the TPU adhesive films. When the Fe and Ni particle size was larger than the penetration skin depth, the initial heating rate and maximum temperature increased with an increase in the particle size. This is attributed to the eddy current heat loss. The heating behavior of the TPU films with Ni particles of different shapes was examined, and different hysteresis heat losses were observed depending on the particle shape. Consequently, the flake-shaped Ni particles showed the most favorable heat generation because of the largest hysteresis loss. The substrate materials also affected the heating behavior of the TPU adhesive films in an induction heating system, and the thermal conductivity of the substrate materials was determined to be the main factor affecting the heating behavior.
