Long shafts for power transmission should transmit torsional load with vibrational stability. Hybrid shafts made of unidirectional fiber-reinforced composite and metal have high fundamental bending natural frequency as well as high torque transmission capability. However, thermal residual stresses due to the coefficient difference of thermal expansion of the composite and metal are developed so that the high residual stresses decrease fatigue resistance of the hybrid shafts, especially at low operating temperatures. In this work, axial compressive preload was given to the shaft in order to change the residual stresses. Static and fatigue torsional tests were performed and correlated with stress analyses with respect to the preload and service temperature.
When a small gear rotates at a very high speed over 40,000 rpm, frictional heat is generated on the gear surfaces. Thermal deformations and stresses arising from frictional heat may lower the efficiency and fatigue life of the high-speed gear. Especially, such frictional heat has much stronger effects on the performance of millimeter-sized high-speed gears used for surgical and dental hand-pieces, due to a small surface area. An analytical equation was derived to calculate frictional temperature on a mating gear surface and conduction heat transfer analysis was performed. Thermal deformation and contact stresses were then calculated using FEM for gears used for medical hand-pieces. The contact stresses of the meshed gear and pinion increase by 19.4% and 16.4%, respectively, when the frictional thermal deformations are considered.
The energy release rate associated with crack growth in adhesive double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens, including the effect of residual stresses, was formulated using beam theory. Because of the rotation of the asymmetric arms in the adhesive DCB specimens due to temperature change, it is necessary to correct the evaluated fracture toughness of the DCB specimens, specifically in the case of a large temperature change. This study shows that the difference between the true toughness and an apparent toughness due to the consequence of ignoring residual stresses can be calculated for a given specimen geometry and thermo-mechanical properties (e.g. coefficient of thermal expansion). The calculated difference in the energy release rates based on the present correction method is compared with that from FEM in order to verify the present correction method. The residual stress effects on the evaluation of the adhesive fracture toughness are discussed.
Generally, analytical consideration on the behaviour of metallic structures during quenching process, and analysis on the thermal stress and deformation after heat treatment are very important in presumption of crack and distorsion of quenched material. In this study a set of constitute equations relevant to the analysis of thermo elasto-viscoplastic materials with strain hysteresis during quenching process way presented on the basis of contimuum thermo-dynamics mechanics. The thermal stresses were numerically calculated by finite element technique of weighted residual method and the principle of virtual work. In the calculation process, the temperature depandency of physical and mechaniclal properties of the material in consideration. On the distribution of elasto-viscoplastic thermal stresses according to radial direction, axial and tangential stress are tensile stress(50MPa, 1.5GPa and 300MPa) in surface and compressive stress(-1.2GPa, -1.14GPa and -750MPa) in the inner part on the other hand, radial stress is tensile stress(900MPa) in area of analysis. According to axial direction, tangential stress gradients are average 60MPa/mm on the whole. The reversion of stress takes place at 11.5 to 16.8mm from the center in area of analysing.
Cracks in the underground structures are mainly observed due to internal ununiformity of thermal stresses or restraint of structural movement in associate with rapid temperature gradient. Especially, thermal cracks are known to occur easily in a massive structure, but possibility of these depend on the amount of cement applied and ratio of span to height of the structure even though the thickness is less than specification‘s. Thus, this study aims at how to control thermal cracks in a massive subway structure and figures out an optimized construction method and procedure. As results of parametric study for length, height and outer temperature for concrete placement, it is found that hydration heats were not affected by both length and height of concrete placement but thermal stresses were greatly dependent. Most effective ways of controling thermal cracks were to fit a proper ratio of length to height of concrete placement and to decrease temperature of concrete placement as much as possible.
The analysis of thermally induced stresses in engineering structures is a very important and necessary task with respect to design and modeling of pressurized containers, heat exchangers, aircrafts segments, etc. to prevent them from failure and improve working conditions. So, the purpose of this study is to investigate elasto-plastic thermal stresses and deformations in a thin annular plate embedded into rigid container. To this end, analytical research devoted to mathematically and physically rigorous stress/strain analysis is performed. In order to evaluate the effect of logarithmic thermal gradients, commonly applied to structures which incorporate thin plate geometries, different thermal parameters such as temperature mismatch and varying constraint temperature were introduced into the model of elastic perfectly-plastic annular plate obeying the von Mises yield criterion with its associated flow rule. The results obtained may be used in sensitive to temperature differences aircraft structures where the thermal effects on equipment must be kept in mind.

Generally, thermal stress induced by hydration heat causes cracking in mass concrete structures, requiring a thorough control during the construction. The prediction of the thermal stress is currently undertaken by means of numerical analysis despite its lack of reliability due to the properties of concrete varying over time. In this paper, a method for the prediction of thermal stress in concrete structures by adjusting thermal stress measured by a thermal stress device according to the degree of restraint is proposed to improve the prediction accuracy. The ratio of stress in concrete structures to stress under complete restraint is used as the degree of restraint. To consider the history of the degree of restraint, incremental stress is predicted by comparing the degree of restraint and the incremental stress obtained by the thermal stress device. Furthermore, the thermal stresses of wall and foundation predicted by the proposed method are compared to those obtained by numerical analysis. The thermal stresses obtained by the proposed method are similar to those obtained by the analysis for structures with internally as well as externally strong restraint. It is therefore concluded that the prediction of thermal stress for concrete structures with various boundary conditions using the proposed method is suggested to be accurate.
