  • Due to functional requirements, SRC column-RC beam abnormal joints with characteristics of strong beam weak column, variable column section, unequal beam height and staggered height exist in the Steel reinforced concrete (SRC) frame-bent main building structure of thermal power plant (TPP). This paper presents the experimental results of these abnormal joints through cyclic loading tests on five specimens with scaling factor of 1/5. The staggered height and whether adding H-shaped steel in beam or not were changing parameters of specimens. The failure patterns, bearing capacity, energy dissipation and ductile performance were analyzed. In addition, the stress mechanism of the abnormal joint was discussed based on the diagonal strut model. The research results showed that the abnormal exterior joints occurred shear failure and column end hinge flexural failure; reducing beam height through adding H-shaped steel in the beam of abnormal exterior joint could improve the crack resistance and ductility; the abnormal interior joints with different staggered heights occurred column ends flexural failure; the joint with larger staggered height had the higher bearing capacity and stiffness, but lower ductility. The concrete compression strut mechanism is still applicable to the abnormal joints in TPP, but it is affected by the abnormal characteristics.

  • Environmental impact assessment(EIA) on the construction and operation of thermal power plant(TPP) is aimed at promoting sustainable coastal development by clearly identifying the marine physics and organisms effects of the project on the surrounding marine environment and minimizing its impact. The primary purpose of this study is to establish EIA guidelines for TPP in order to assess how TPP construction projects influence marine environment and to establish the mitigaion plans of environmental impacts. Through this study, scientific and efficient EIA guidelines for the marine environments were established by a specialist forum consisted of officials from the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, personnel from five public corporations in charge of TPPs and marine environment experts. In the study, fifteen EIA reports (2009~2015) on TPPs submitted were analyzed to identify the shortcomings of current assessment items on marine environment and to collect a wide range of information including EIA report formulation regulations, domestic and overseas environmental survey guidelines and EIA review comments on TPPs. Based on the findings, a specialist forum put together EIA guidelines for TPP construction projects.

  • This paper aims to investigate the seismic behavior and influence parameters of the large-scaled thin-walled reinforced concrete (RC) tubular columns in air-cooled supporting structures of thermal power plants (TPPs). Cyclic loading tests and finite element analysis were performed on 1/8-scaled specimens considering the influence of wall diameter ratio, axial compression ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, stirrup reinforcement ratio and adding steel diagonal braces (SDBs). The research results showed that the cracks mainly occurred on the lower half part of RC tubular columns during the cyclic loading test; the specimen with the minimum wall diameter ratio presented the earlier cracking and had the most cracks; the failure mode of RC tubular columns was large bias compression failure; increasing the axial compression ratio could increase the lateral bearing capacity and energy dissipation capacity, but also weaken the ductility and aggravate the lateral stiffness deterioration; increasing the longitudinal reinforcement ratio could efficiently enhance the seismic behavior; increasing the stirrup reinforcement ratio was favorable to the ductility; RC tubular columns with SDBs had a much higher bearing capacity and lateral stiffness than those without SDBs, and with the decrease of the angle between columns and SDBs, both bearing capacity and lateral stiffness increased significantly.

  • In complex and large-scale industries, properly designed fault detection and identification (FDI) systems considerably improve safety, reliability and availability of target processes. In thermal power plants (TPPs), generating units operate under very dangerous conditions; system failures can cause severe loss of life and property. In this paper, we propose a bagged auto-associative kernel regression (AAKR)-based FDI approach for steam boilers in TPPs. AAKR estimates new query vectors by online local modeling, and is suitable for TPPs operating under various load levels. By combining the bagging method, more stable and reliable estimations can be achieved, since the effects of random fluctuations decrease because of ensemble averaging. To validate performance, the proposed method and comparison methods (i.e., a clustering-based method and principal component analysis) are applied to failure data due to water wall tube leakage gathered from a 250 MW coal-fired TPP. Experimental results show that the proposed method fulfills reasonable false alarm rates and, at the same time, achieves better fault detection performance than the comparison methods. After performing fault detection, contribution analysis is carried out to identify fault variables; this helps operators to confirm the types of faults and efficiently take preventive actions.

  • A small hydro-power plant using the seawater used as the cooling (circulated) water and discharged is under construction. The bigger size of the small hydro-power plant, the better in order to maximize the efficiency and the electric power. The optimal size, however, should be determined in the constraints of the channel un-disturbed range. The water level change should be checked in detail based on the hydraulic behaviour. In this study, the FLOW3D model, three-dimensional flow model, is setup using the flow measurement data in the effluent discharge channel and the flow pattern changes due to the small hydro-power plant construction are predicted by the model. The plant construction makes the increasing of the water level, and the water level in the upstream of the channel weir is increased 65 cm from 4.32 m to 4.97 m, in the condition of the design discharge $156m^3/s$ and the movable weir height of the hydro-power plant 3.8 m.

  • A small hydro-power plant operated by cooling water discharged from the power plant is under construction. In this study, the flow characteristics of the effluent channel and the outfall coastal zone in which the facilities are constructed have been measured and analysed. The flow pattern is highly dependent on the effluent discharge and clearly classified as these typical areas; the upstream and downstream areas of the weir, and the outfall coastal zone. The discharge and the width of the channel in the upstream area of the weir are increased step by step, so the water level fluctuation is small. The flow overtopping the weir is rapidly changing and has highly vertical fluctuation patterns after hydraulic jump just below the weir. The flow pattern in the outfall zone is directed toward the seaward direction and the velocity is dominated by the tidal level fluctuation. The mean tidal range in this area is about 10% greater than that of the Tongyeong tidal gauging station and the wave effects are negligible because of the sheltering effects of this area.

  • In this paper, EP-Kalina cycle applying liquid-vapor ejector and motive pump is newly proposed. In this EP-Kalina cycle, the liquid-vapor ejector is used to increase pressure difference between inlet and outlet of the turbine. Also the motive pump enhances the performance of liquid-vapor ejector, resulting in increase of system efficiency of OTEC cycles. The comparison cycles in this study are basic, Kalina, EKalina and EP-Kalina ones. The pump work, net power, APRe, APRc, TPP and system efficiency of each cycle are compared. In case of net power, EP-Kalina cycle is lowest among the cycles due to the application of the motive pump. But, the net power difference of cycles seems to be minor since the pump work of cycles is merely about 1kW, compared to turbine gross power of 20kW. The system efficiency of EP-Kalina cycle shows 3.22%, relatively 44% higher than that of basic OTEC cycle. Therefore, the system efficiency is increased by applying the liquid-vapor ejector and the motive pump. Additional performance analysis is necessary to optimize the proposed EP-Kalina cycle.

  • Since thermal power plant (TPP) equipment is operated under very high pressure and temperature, failures of the equipment give rise to severe losses of life and property. To prevent the losses, fault detection method is, therefore, absolutely necessary to identify abnormal operating conditions of the equipment in advance. In this paper, we present Mahalanobis distance (MD) based fault detection method for steam boiler tube in TPP. In the MD-based method, it is supposed that abnormal data samples are far away from normal samples. Using multivariate samples collected from normal target system, mean vector and covariance matrix are calculated and threshold value of MD is decided. In a test phase, after calculating the MDs between the mean vector and test samples, alarm signals occur if the MDs exceed the predefined threshold. To demonstrate the performance, a failure case due to boiler tube leakage in 200MW TPP is employed. The experimental results show that the presented method can perform early detection of boiler tube leakage successfully.
