Thermally sprayed metals or organic coatings is often used in corrosion protection of steel structures. Duplex coating systems of thermally sprayed metal in combination with organic coating are selected as a new generic type of coatings on steel structures under the highly corrosive environments. In this study, three types of corrosion tests were carried out on four types of thermal sprayed specimens with sealing: zinc, zinc-15%aluminum alloy, aluminum and aluminum-5%magnesium alloy, four types of duplex coated specimens; thermally sprayed metals in combination with paint of acrylic urethane, and painted specimens. NORSOK M-501, Wet/dry cyclic seawater tests and outdoor exposure tests of nine types of specimens were conducted. From the corrosion test results, weathering performance of them were presented.
Hollow silica spheres were prepared by spray drying of precursor solution of colloidal silica. The precursor solution is composed of 10-20 nm colloidal silica dispersed in a water or ethanol-water mixture solvent with additives of tris hydroxymethyl aminomethane. The effect of pH and concentrations of the precursor and additives on the formation of hollow sphere particles was studied. The spray drying process parameters of the precursor feeding rate, inlet temperature, and gas flow rate are controlled to produce the hollow spherical silica. The mixed solvent of ethanol and water was preferred because it improved the hollowness of the spheres better than plain water did. It was possible to obtain hollow silica from high concentration of 14.3 wt% silica precursor with pH 3. The thermal conductivity and total solar reflectivity of the hollow silica sample was measured and compared with those values of other commercial insulating fillers of glass beads and $TiO_2$ for applications of insulating paint, in which the glass beads are representative of the low thermal conductive fillers and the $TiO_2$ is representative of infrared reflective fillers. The thermal conductivity of hollow silica was comparable to that of the glass beads and the total solar reflectivity was higher than that of $TiO_2$.

Magnesium alloys exhibit many attractive properties such as low density, high strength/weight ratio, high thermal conductivity, very good electromagnetic features and good recyclability. However, most commercial magnesium alloys require protective coatings because of their poor corrosion resistance. Attempts have been made to improve the corrosion resistance of the Mg alloys by surface treatments, such as chemical conversion coatings, anodizing, plating and metal coatings, are commonly applied to magnesium alloys in order to increase the corrosion resistance. Among them, chemical conversion coatings are regarded as one of the most effective and cheapest ways to prevent corrosion resistance. In this study, zinc phosphate conversion coatings on various Mg alloys have been developed by selecting proper phosphating bath composition and concentration and by optimizing phosphating time, temperature. Morphology, coatings composition, corrosion resistance, adhesion and its formation and growth mechanism of the zinc phosphate conversion coatings were studied. Results have shown some attractive properties such as simplicity in operation, significantly increased corrosion protective property. However, adhesions between coatings and substrate and also between coatings and paint are still not satisfied. Resolving the problems and understanding the mechanism of phosphating process are targets of our study.

When the fire occur, concrete filled steel tube(CFT) columns expected to form a much distinction in a fire resistance performance according to a kind of fire protection because the steel surface is directly exposed to high temperature. In this study, an experiment by three factors which were kind of fire protection, thickness of protection and time was performed to get the characteristics of temperature distribution types of CFT column with fire protection. As the result of this study, on a basis of heating temperature, spray protection was the most superior in a fire resistance performance, fireproof paint was next, and without fire protection was most inferior. In a heating time-location relationship, the temperature increased slowly on the surface of the concrete, but the temperature increased sharply on the surface of the steel.

Concrete filled steel hollow structural sections (CFSs) are an efficient, sustainable, and attractive option for both ambient temperature and fire resistance design of columns in multi-storey buildings and are becoming increasingly common in modern construction practice around the world. Whilst the design of these sections at ambient temperatures is reasonably well understood, and models to predict the strength and failure modes of these elements at ambient temperatures correlate well with observations from tests, this appears not to be true in the case of fire resistant design. This paper reviews available data from furnace tests on CFS columns and assesses the statistical confidence in available fire resistance design models/approaches used in North America and Europe. This is done using a meta-analysis comparing the available experimental data from large-scale standard fire tests performed around the world against fire resistance predictions from design codes. It is shown that available design approaches carry a very large uncertainty of prediction, suggesting that they fail to properly account for fundamental aspects of the underlying thermal response and/or structural mechanics during fire. Current North American fire resistance design approaches for CFS columns are shown to be considerably less conservative, on average, than those used in Europe.
Purpose: When the SURION Aircraft operated in the fields, cracks are found in PU(polyurethane) Strip on main rotor blade. This study has been conducted to explain PU(polyurethane) Strip crack phenomenon of SURION main rotor blade and to propose useful solution of it by experimental method. Methods: This study considered a lot of factor because the SURION is operated at severe environment. This study investigated the influence of temperature, thermal shock, paint and primer process, PU Strip material, primer material. Results: The results of this study are as follows; The primer process was most excellent influence. The Application of primer having a brittleness caused by a crack of PU Strip. Other factors have influenced on the PU Strip, but they can not be controlled because they are related to the SURION's operating environment. Conclusion: The Quality of PU Strip on SURION main rotor blade was improved through removing the primer process. Finally, the reliability of main rotor blade was guaranteed through improving the quality of PU Strip.
The accident at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in March 2011, caused by an earthquake and a subsequent tsunami, resulted in a failure of the power systems that are needed to cool the reactors at the plant. The accident progression in the absence of heat removal systems caused Units 1-3 to undergo fuel melting. Containment pressurization and hydrogen explosions ultimately resulted in the escape of radioactivity from reactor containments into the atmosphere and ocean. Problems in containment venting operation, leakage from primary containment boundary to the reactor building, improper functioning of standby gas treatment system (SGTS), unmitigated hydrogen accumulation in the reactor building were identified as some of the reasons those added-up in the severity of the accident. The Fukushima accident not only initiated worldwide demand for installation of adequate control and mitigation measures to minimize the potential source term to the environment but also advocated assessment of the existing mitigation systems performance behavior under a wide range of postulated accident scenarios. The uncertainty in estimating the released fraction of the radionuclides due to the Fukushima accident also underlined the need for comprehensive understanding of fission product behavior as a function of the thermal hydraulic conditions and the type of gaseous, aqueous, and solid materials available for interaction, e.g., gas components, decontamination paint, aerosols, and water pools. In the light of the Fukushima accident, additional experimental needs identified for hydrogen and fission product issues need to be investigated in an integrated and optimized way. Additionally, as more and more passive safety systems, such as passive autocatalytic recombiners and filtered containment venting systems are being retrofitted in current reactors and also planned for future reactors, identified hydrogen and fission product issues will need to be coupled with the operation of passive safety systems in phenomena oriented and coupled effects experiments. In the present paper, potential hydrogen and fission product issues raised by the Fukushima accident are discussed. The discussion focuses on hydrogen and fission product behavior inside nuclear power plant containments under severe accident conditions. The relevant experimental investigations conducted in the technical scale containment THAI (thermal hydraulics, hydrogen, aerosols, and iodine) test facility (9.2 m high, 3.2 m in diameter, and $60m^3$ volume) are discussed in the light of the Fukushima accident.

Infrared emissivity is one of the most important factors for the temperature measurement by infrared thermography. Although the infrared emissivity of an object can be measured from the ratio of blackbody and the object, at room temperature it is practically difficult to measure the value due to the background effects. Hence, quantitative reflectance of bare steel plate and the surface of coating was measured by FT-IR spectroscopy and emissivity was calculated from this. The emissivity of polished bare steel surface was from 0.06 to 0.10 and the value for the unpolished bare steel can not be achieved because optical characteristics changes of surface roughness induces erroneous results. Emissivity of transparent paint coated steel was from 0.50 to 0.84. Depends on the IR absorption regions, which is a characteristic value of the coating, emissivity changes. This study suggests surface condition of material, thickness, roughness et cetra are important factor for IR optical characteristics. Emissivity measurement by reflection method is useful technique to be applied for metal and it with coating applied on the surface. The range of experimental errors of temperature can be narrowed by the application of infrared thermography from the measured thermal emissivity.
This report does studied for making the method of conserving bracket murals in Daeungjeon of Jikjisa Temple, through the scientific way. Results of evaluated the conservation status at the braket mural paintings, most serious damage is structural damage like cracks, breakage, and delamination. After optical investigation, a characteristic point wasn't found such as underdrawing or traces of a coat of paint. The ultrasonic examination speed by each wall painting was measured from about 195.8 m/s to 392.7 m/s, according to the location of the surface, and it was able to compare the surface properties according to the location. In Infrared-thermal image measurement shows that wall layer separation and paint layer delamination are closely detected, therefore it was able to judge of damage on the objective way. Material analysis revealed that the walls were made by sand and weathering soil. The wall layer combined sand with less than fine sand size by nearly 5:5, and the finishing layer was found to have mixed medium sand and fine sand at approximately 6:4 rates. However, In case of finishing layer, mixing ratios of sizes less than very fine sand were found to be significantly lower than wall. Therefore, it is estimated that the plysical damage such as the separation between the layers of the walls created in the braket mural paintings, is continuously caused by changes in the internal stresses and volume ratio caused by the density differences between the wall and the finishing layers.
The aim of this study was to evaluate and establish of emission test method for liquid phase building materials such as paint, adhesive, sealant by emission cell. A small-scale emission chamber and emission cell were used to evaluate emission of TVOC from paint, adhesive, sealant. The quantity of TVOC emission were measured by a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Background concentration of TVOC was below $10{\mu}g/m^3$ in the emission chamber and cell. Air tightness and recovery in chamber and cell showed good results. The recovery of thermal desorber for toluene and n-dodecane were about 120%. The repeatability of response factor and retention time in GC/MS below 30%. The method detection limit of VOCs ranged 0.04~8.82 ng. The concentration of TVOC emission using emission cell was 1.35~1.41 times higher than emission chamber. The correlation of TVOC emission using chamber and cell method was significantly high (r=0.91~0.97).
