The power loss of the controllable switches in modular multilevel converter (MMC) HVDC transmission systems is an important factor, which can determine the design of the operating junction temperatures. Due to the dc current component, the approximate calculation tool provided by the manufacturer of the switches cannot be used for the losses of the switches in the MMC. Based on the enabled probabilities of each SM in an arm, the current analytical models of the switches can be determined. The average and RMS currents can be obtained from the corresponding current analytical model. Then, the conduction losses can be calculated, and the switching losses of the switches can be estimated according to the upper limit of the switching frequency. Finally, the thermal resistance model of the switches can be utilized, and the junction temperatures can be estimated. A comparison between the calculation and PSCAD simulation results shows that the proposed method is effective for estimating the junction temperatures of the switches in the MMC.
The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) has been used to convert thermal energy to mechanical energy or electricity. The available thermal energy could be waste heat, solar energy, geothermal energy, and so on. However, these kinds of thermal energies cannot be provided continuously. Hence, the ORC can be operated at the off-design point. In this case, the performance of the ORC could be worse because the components of the ORC system designed based on a design point can be mismatched with the output power obtained at the off-design point. In order to improve the performance at the off-design point, a few components were replaced including generator, bearing, load bank, shaft, pump and so on. Experiments were performed on the same facility without including other losses in the experiment. The experimental results were compared with the results obtained with the previous model, and they showed that the system efficiency of the ORC was greatly affected by the losses occurred on the components.

Minimization of nozzle induces many flow losses in micro-propulsion system. In this study, we studied about thermal transpiration based new conceptual micro propulsion system to overcome these losses. Thermal transpiration device(Knudsen pump) having no moving parts can self-pump the gaseous propellant by temperature gradient only (cold to hot). We designed, fabricated the knudsen pump and analyzed pressure gradient efficiency of membrane according to Knudsen number under vacuum condition. In this paper, we compared mass flow rate of Knudsen pump by using different membrane type ; Polyimide and Hangi, Korean traditional paper.

This paper presents a conceptual design and analysis for a 1-kW-class high-temperature superconducting rotating machine (HTSRM) rotor. The designed prototype is a small-scale integration system of a HTSRM and a HTS contactless rotary excitation device (CRED). Technically, CRED and HTSRM are connected in the same shaft, and it effectively charges the HTS coils of the rotor field winding by pumping fluxes via a non-contact method. HTS coils in rotor pole body and toroidal HTS wire in CRED rotor are cooled and operated by liquid nitrogen in cryogen tank located in inner-most of rotor. Therefore, it is crucial to securely maintain the thermal stability of cryogenic environment inside rotor. Especially, we critically consider not only on mechanical characteristics of the rotor but also on cryogenic thermal characteristics. In this paper, we conduct two main tasks covering optimizing a conceptual design and performing operational characteristics. First, rotor parameters are conceptually designed by analytical design codes. These parameters consider to mechanical and thermal performances such as mechanical strength, mechanical rigidity, and thermal heat losses of the rotor. Second, mechanical and thermal characteristics of rotor for 1-kW-class HTSRM are analyzed to verify the feasible operation conditions. Hence, three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D-FEA) method is used to perform these analyses in ANSYS-Workbench platform.
Losses on the turbine consist of the mechanical loss, tip clearance loss, secondary flow loss and blade profile loss etc.,. More than 60 % of total losses on the turbine is generated by the two latter loss mechanisms. These losses are directly related with the reduction of turbine efficiency. In order to provide a new design methodology for reducing losses and increasing turbine efficiency, a two-dimensional axial-type turbine blade shape is modified by the optimization process with two-dimensional compressible flow analysis codes, which are validated by the experimental results on the VKI turbine blade. A turbine blade profile is selected at the mean radius of turbine rotor using on a heavy duty gas turbine, and optimized at the operating condition. Shape parameters, which are employed to change the blade shape, are applied as design variables in the optimization process. Aerodynamic, mechanical and geometric constraints are imposed to ensure that the optimized profile meets all engineering restrict conditions. The objective function is the pitchwise area averaged total pressure at the 30% axial chord downstream from the trailing edge. 13 design variables are chosen for blade shape modification. A 10.8 % reduction of total pressure loss on the turbine rotor is achieved by this process, which is same as a more than 1% total-to-total efficiency increase. The computed results are compared with those using 11 design variables, and show that optimized results depend heavily on the accuracy of blade design.

To understand the effect of powder characteristics on the thermal debinding behavior, PIM parts produced with powders with different particle sizes and particle shapes were examined to determine their weight losses during thermal debinding. The results show that the average diameter of the pore channel in the compact increased when the temperature increased and when coarse powders were used. However, the weight loss rates did not increase proportionally with the pore size. This suggests that the different powders that are frequently used in PIM parts do not affect the thermal debinding rate significantly. This is because the pore size is much larger than the mean free path of the decomposed gas molecules. Thus, the diffusion rates of the gases are not rate-controlling in thermal debinding. The controlling mechanism of the thermal debinding rate is the decomposition of the backbone binder in the PIM parts.
Recently, Interior Permanent Magnet Machine(IPM) is widely used for traction motor in the high speed train. Due to the high efficiency and high power density of the IPM, it has lots of heat sources such as iron loss and copper loss. These heat sources can cause the demagnetization of permanent magnet, losses in output power and even irreversible defect of the IPM. To prevent the power loss caused by heat sources, the accurate thermal analysis has to be carried out. For the thermal analysis of the IPM, the thermal network is designed for this traction motor. The thermal analysis has executed at rated speed operation. The result of thermal network analysis can be used for the IPM design process.
The present study has been carried out to predict the heat transfer characteristics of reverse heat loss method for a residential refrigerator by using numerical analysis and corresponding experiment. From the measured values of temperature and heat input, one can conclude that, the temperature inside the refrigerator has a nearly linear relationship with heat input. The effect of gasket heat loss was examined with the change of thermal conductivity of gasket region. The appropriate thermal conductivity of gasket region was acquired from the comparison of heat losses with the experimental result and numerical analysis. The result of calculated heat losses had accuracy within 1.8% error with the experimental result. With the selected thermal conductivity of gasket region, the effectiveness of reverse heat loss method was examined with the change of thermal conductivity of vacuum insulation panel.

Output fluctuation which is generated in wind power farm can hinder stability of total power system. The electric energy storage (EES) reduces unstable output, and superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) of various EESs has the proper performance for output compensation of wind power farm since it charges and discharges large scale power quickly with high efficiency. However, because of the change of current within SMES, the electromagnetic losses occur in the process of output compensation. In this paper, the thermal effect of the losses that occur in SMES system while compensating in wind power farm is analyzed. The output analysis of wind power farm is processed by numerical analysis, and the losses of SMES system is analyzed by 3D finite element analysis (FEA) simulation tool.

This paper presents a new single phase front-end ac-dc bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) rectifier topology. The proposed converter achieves a high efficiency over a wide range of input and output voltages, a high power factor, low line current harmonics and both step up and step down voltage conversions. This topology is based on a non-inverting buck-boost (Zeta) converter. In this approach, the input diode bridge is removed and a maximum of one diode conducts in a complete switching period. This reduces the conduction losses and the thermal stresses on the switches when compare to existing PFC topologies. Inherent power factor correction is achieved by operating the converter in the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) which leads to a simplified control circuit. The characteristics of the proposed design, principles of operation, steady state operation analysis, and control structure are described in this paper. An experimental prototype has been built to demonstrate the feasibility of the new converter. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the improved power quality at the AC mains and the lower conduction losses of the converter.
