  • Experiments and computations were conducted to investigate the heat insulation characteristics of multi layer materials for cultivation greenhouse. In case of the experiments, measurements of temperature were carried out with a K-type thermocouples and data logger to research the heat transfer in the experimental module generated by the heat source. A thermal conductivity meter, QTM-500 based on modified transient hot wire method was used to measure the thermal conductivity of multi layer materials. The numerical analyses were performed by commercial code CFX-11 according to the variation of multi layer materials without air layer. The experimental results showed that the heat insulation of multi layer materials was higher than single layer materials by 50~90%. It was found that the effect of heat insulation was raised by the combination of multi layer materials.

  • Infrared (IR) detectors are widely used for such applications as thermoelastic stress analysis, medical diagnostics and temperature measurement. Infrared detectors commonly need to be refrigerated below 80 K, and thus a cooling system should be equipped together with the detector system. The cooling load, which should be removed by the cooling system to maintain the nominal operating temperature of the detector, critically depends on the insulation efficiency of the cryochamber housing the detector. Thermal load of a cryochamber is attributed to the conduction heat transfer through a cold finger, the gases conduction and radiation heat transfer. The thermal loads of an infrared detector cryochamber with a radiation shield are investigated experimentally in present study. Since the effect of radiation heat transfer on thermal loads is significant, radiation shields is installed in the cold finger part to protect heat input through radiation.

  • We present a new way to create a thermally stable, highly strained germanium (Ge) optical resonator using a novel Ge-on-dual-insulators substrate. Instead of using a conventional way to undercut the oxide layer of a Ge-on-single-insulator substrate for inducing tensile strain in germanium, we use thin aluminum oxide as a sacrificial layer. By eliminating the air gap underneath the active germanium layer, we achieve an optically insulating, thermally conductive, and highly strained Ge resonator structure that is critical for a practical germanium laser. Using Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence experiments, we prove that the novel geometry of our Ge resonator structure provides a significant improvement in thermal stability while maintaining good optical confinement.

  • The Thermal Barrier Coation(TBC) to improve the that barrier and wear resistant propenrty in high temperature ofthe aircraftength between the accumlation of the aircraft engine and the automobile engine has usually the two layer structure. One is a creamic top layer for heat insulation and the other is a metal bond layer to facilitate the bond strength between the top ceramic layer and the substrate. But, the coated layers should be peeled off because of the accumulation of the thermal stress by the differance of the thermal expantion coefficient between metal and ceramics in a hrat cyclic environment. In this study, the intermediate layer by plasm spray process was introduced to reduce the thermal stress. The powders of plasm spray coating were the Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ), the Magnesia Stabillized Zirconia(MSZ) and NiCrAlY. the intermediate layer was sprayed with the powders of the bond cast for the purpose of test were executed. The high temperature wear resistance tends to decreasnceee wear and thermal shock test were exeucuted. The high temperature were resistance of the YSZ TBC is better that of the MSZ TBC. The wearrsistance tends to decrease accoring to incresing the temperature between $400^{\circ}C$to $600^{\circ}C$. The thermal shock life of the 3 layer TBC with YSZ top casting was the most outstanding thermal shock rsisstasnce. This means that the intermediate layer should play an importnat roll to alleviate the diffrerence of the thermal expansion coef frcients between metallic layer and cermics layer.

  • This study reports on the development of intelligent clothing using a shape memory alloy (SMA) that forms a still air layer and provides thermal insulation depending on the environment temperature. SMA springs were prepared with Nitinol and have an original length of 6mm and a latent length of 20mm with a response temperature of $24.5^{\circ}C$. Hysteresis was evaluated at a temperature between $0^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$. An experimental outdoor jacket that was attached with 30 springs was compared with a commercial jacket in terms of the microclimate temperature, humidity, and comfort properties by human subject tests in the microclimate chamber set at $5{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$. The results showed that the microclimate temperature of SMA embedded clothing system from the wear trials was higher than the commercial ones during the rest period after exercise, especially on the skin side. In addition the thermal, humidity, and comfort sensations of SMA embedded clothing were better than the commercial ones.

  • In this study, we synthesized two different silica monoliths by using sol-gel, solvent exchange, surface modification, ambient pressure drying processes, and surfactant-based templating technique followed by calcination process. All of the prepared two silica monoliths showed crack-free appearance with fairly good transparency, and furthermore were confirmed to have extremely high porosity, specific surface area, and mean pore size below 30 nm. The silica aerogel sample exhibited finer and more homogeneous nano-sized pore structure due to spring back effect caused by surface modification, which resulted in better thermal insulation performance. Based on measured thermal conductivities and theoretical relationship, multi-layered glass window system in which silica monolith prepared in this study was inserted as a middle layer was revealed to have superior thermal insulation performance compared to conventional air-inserted glass window system.

  • In this thesis, the Sol-Air temperature distribution for the side-wall of a cylindrical cryogenic storage tank made of nonhomogenious composite layer was studied, in order to calculate the thermal load by Newton's cooling law, when the solar radiation was applied upon the side wall. In the analysis, the atmospheric slab was assumed to be horizontal and infinitely large, and the Sol -Air temperature, which was found by the Net- Radiation method considering the longwave radiation wi th surroundings, was used for boundary condition. Energy equation and boundary conditions were normalized by the defined reference- temperature, and solved. The solutions were developed by the Fourier cosine series. Then, the Sol-Air temperature distribution for the side-wall of LNG storage tank was calculated.

  • Sleeping is important for human being in that it has a great effect on their daily activities. Considering that an average adult sleeps seven to eight hours a third of our life is spent in bed. The present study intends to make consumers aware of the important of the bedding science and help the manufactures develop efficient, up-to-date beds. For these two purposes, consumers' recognitions and opinions on the features of the bedding were surveyed. In the study, a questionnaire consisting of various items on the features of the bedding was designed and distributed to consumers in 8 regions & Taegu in Korea to survey the patterns in which they buy, use, and maintain their bedding. The result of the study are as follows; Air conditioner is widely used popular because of hot weather in Taegu. People in Taegu mostly purchase their bedding from market, in every 5~6 years. The important point to be considered for bedding purchases were humidity absorption, air permeability, light weight in summer comforters, thermal insulation, flexibility, color figure design in winter comforters, humidity absorption, flexibility, color figure design in mats. As summer bedding, a sheet of single-layer quilt and rush mat were most popular which indicates climate of hot and humid weather in Taegu. Bedding uses in winter were in order a sheet of cotton, silk, wool quilt, and silk quilt showed high level in contrast to other areas. Dissatisfactions with summer quilts were humidity absorption, air permeability, heaviness and in winter quilts they were dissatisfied with thermal insulation, heaviness, flattening. In details about bedding managements, people in Taegu most frequently disinfected their bedding by sunlight in one month, and refinished every 5 years.
