In order to set up the basic environmental control systems which the new concept greenhouses have to equip, greenhouse characteristics, environmental management and control systems in domestic glasshouses and plastic houses were investigated and analyzed comparatively. Survey results on the width, length, eaves height, and the number of spans etc. showed that glasshouses were bigger than plastic houses significantly. New concept greenhouses claim to be plastic houses, but it will be reasonable to follow the specifications of the glasshouse. Specifications to be applied to new concept greenhouses were proposed as follows; hot water heating systems, aluminum screens as the thermal curtain, evaporative cooling systems, roof vents on the ridge, circulation fans, $CO_2$ enrichment, hydroponic systems, and automatic irrigation control systems. Environmental measurement systems for the indoor and outdoor temperature, humidity, light, wind speed and indoor $CO_2$ concentration have to be fully equipped. The automatic control system has to be as a complex environmental control system, not a single item control system. Also, for stable dissemination, domestically producing complete greenhouse control system should be made as soon as possible.
A thermoset type anisotropic conductive adhesive film (ACAF) comprising epoxy resin and natural butyl rubber (NBR) as the binder, micro-encapsulated imidazole as the curing agent, and Ni/Au coated polymer bead as a conductive particle has been studied. These films have been prepared to respond to requirements such as improved contact resistance, current status less of than 60 ${\mu}m$ and reliability. These films can also be used for connection between the ITO glass for LCD panel and the flexible circuit board. The curing conditions for the connection were 40, 20 and 15 seconds at 150, 170 and 190 $^{\circ}C$, respectively. The initial contact resistance and adhesion strength were 0.5 ${\Omega}/square$ and 0.4 kg/cm under the condition of 30 kgf/$^{cm}^2}$, respectively. After completing one thousand thermal shock cycling tests between -15 $^{\circ}C$ and 100 $^{\circ}C$, the contact resistance was maintained below 0.7 ${\Omega}/square$. Durability against high temperature (80$^{\circ}C$) and high humidity (85 % RH) was also tested to confirm long-term stability (1000 hrs) of the conduction.
The effect of surface contact angle on the behavior of frost formation in a fin-tube heat exchanger is investigated experimentally. It is shown that both heat exchangers with hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces appear to have a better thermal performance than bare aluminium heat exchanger, but the improvements are very small. There is a little increase in the amount of the frost deposited onto the heat exchanger with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface. However, the effect of contact angle on the frost density is observed ; the frost with high density forms on the heat exchanger with hydrophilic surface ; and the frost with low density is deposited onto the heat exchanger with hydrophobic surface when compared with the frost deposited onto the heat exchanger with bare aluminium surface. This may be attributed to the fact that the shape of water droplets which condense on the surface of heat exchanger at the early stage of frosting varies with contact angle, and thus makes a difference on the structure of frost formation. From the experiments with different relative humidity of inlet air, it is shown that the variations of operating parameter make no influence on the effect of surface contact angle on the frosting behavior in the heat exchanger.
The regenerative evaporation water cooler is devised and analysed in this study. The regenerative evaporation water cooler is composed of a sensible heat exchanger to cool the incoming air, followed by a latent heat exchanger to cool the water evaporatively with the cooled air flowing out of the sensible heat exchanger. By linearizing psychrometric characteristics, the heat and mass transfer in the regenerative evaporation water cooler is analyzed theoretically. The results show that the water can be cooled down even lower than the wet-bulb temperature of the inlet air. When the inlet air is $32^{\circ}C$ and 20% in relative humidity, and the inlet temperature of the water is $20^{\circ}C$, the regenerative evaporation water cooler provides a larger cooling capacity than the conventional evaporation water cooler if the effectiveness of the latent heat exchanger is higher than 0.6 and that of the sensible heat exchanger is higher than 0.5.
In this study, effect of reinforced insulation on heating and cooling loads were studied due to installation of PV panels on factory building roof with a floor area of 12,960 m2. For PV panel installation, combination of aluminum, polyurethane, air, polystyrene and steel materials were added to the original roof, which increased thermal insulation performance. Half of the roof were covered with PV panel and the other half without. Temperature and relative humidity were measured for 8 days during summer season for both indoor spaces. PV panel showed the effect of lowering the indoor space temperature by 0.6℃. TRNSYS dynamic simulation showed that with PV panel, cooling load per area is reduced by 1.7 W/m2 and heating by 10.0 W/m2. PV panels installed on building roof not only generate electricity but also can save energy by reducing cooling and heating loads.
Traditional approaches for structural health monitoring (SHM) seldom take ambient uncertainty (temperature, humidity, ambient vibration) into consideration, while their impacts on structural responses are substantial, leading to a possibility of raising false alarms. A few predictors model-based approaches deal with these uncertainties through complex numerical models running online, rendering the SHM approach to be compute-intensive, slow, and sometimes not practical. Also, with model-based approaches, the imperative need for a precise understanding of the structure often poses a problem for not so well understood complex systems. The present study employs a data-based approach coupled with Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) to correlate recorded response time histories under varying temperature conditions to corresponding damage scenarios. EMD decomposes the response signal into a finite set of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). A two-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (2DCNN) is further trained to associate these IMFs to the respective damage cases. The use of IMFs in place of raw signals helps to reduce the impact of sensor noise while preserving the essential spatio-temporal information less-sensitive to thermal effects and thereby stands as a better damage-sensitive feature than the raw signal itself. The proposed algorithm is numerically tested on a single span bridge under varying temperature conditions for different damage severities. The dynamic strain is recorded as the response since they are frame-invariant and cheaper to install. The proposed algorithm has been observed to be damage sensitive as well as sufficiently robust against measurement noise.
From the effect of bound water, this study aims to seek the potential reasons for difference of mechanical experiment results of subgrades soils. To attain the comparatively test condition of bound water, dry forming (DF) and wet forming (WF) were used in the specimen forming process before testing, series of laboratory tests, i.e., CBR tests, direct shear tests and compaction tests. The measured optimal moisture contents, maximum dry densities, CBR, cohesion c, and internal friction angle 𝜑 were given contrastive analysis. Then to detect the adsorptive bound water in the subgrade soils, the thermal gravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) test were employed under different heating rates. The free water, loosely bound water and tightly bound water in soils were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. It was found that due to the different dehydration mechanics, the lost bound water in DF and WF process show their own characteristics. This may lead to the different mechanical properties of tested soils. The clayey particles have a great influence on the bound water adsorbed ability of subgrade soils. The more the clay content, the greater the difference of mechanical properties tested between the two forming methods. Moreover, in highway construction of southern China, the wet forming method is recommended for its higher authenticity in simulating the subgrade filed humidity.
This study presents a roll-to-roll process which is capable of Ag nanowire (AgNW) transfer from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film to polycarbonate (PC) film. We developed a roll-to-roll machine that consists of two film suppliers, a coater of photo-curable resin, a film laminator, an ultraviolet (UV) exposure unit, and a film winder to facilitate large-area electrode transfer between different flexible substates. Using the process, optimal fabrication condition was investigated by parametric experiments in terms of the UV exposure time, number of thermal cycling, and exposure time of high temperature and humidity. A fabricated AgNW on PC film showed sheet resistance of 52 Ω/sq and optical transmittance of approximately 80 % over a range of visible light.
Bridges are critical to the civil engineering infrastructure network as they facilitate movement of people, the transportation of goods and services. Given the aging of bridge infrastructure, federal officials mandate visual inspections biennially to identify necessary repair actions which are time, cost, and labor-intensive. Additionally, the expansion joints of bridges are rarely monitored due to cost. However, expansion joints are critical as they absorb movement from thermal effects, loadings strains, impact, abutment settlement, and vehicle motion movement. Thus, the need to monitor bridge expansion joints efficiently, at a low cost, and wirelessly is desired. This paper addresses bridge joint monitoring needs to develop a cost-effective, real-time wireless system that can be validated in a full-scale bridge structure. To this end, a wireless expansion joint monitoring was developed using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) sensors. An in-service bridge was selected as a testbed to validate the performance of the developed system compared with traditional displacement sensor, LVDT, temperature and humidity sensors. The short-term monitoring campaign with the wireless sensor system with the internet protocol version 6 over the time slotted channel hopping mode of IEEE 802.15.4e (6TiSCH) network showed reliable results, providing high potential of the developed system for effective joint monitoring at a low cost.
Concrete is one of the most widely used structure materials. Concrete is like the motor of the construction industry. The remarkable feature of this Concrete is its cheapness and low energy consumption. Concrete alone does not show resistance against any force but only against compressive forces. Therefore, steel rebar product is used as a reinforcement and increase the strength of Concrete. It can be done by putting rebar in Concrete in different ways. Rebar rusting is one of the crucial symptoms that cause swift destruction in reinforced structures-factors such as moisture in concrete increase the steel corrosion rate. In most cases, it is difficult to compensate for the damage caused by the corrosion of base metals, so preventing corrosion will be much more cost-effective. Coatings made with nanotechnology can protect Concrete against external degradation factors to prevent water and humidity from penetrating the Concrete and prevent rusting and corrosion of the rebar inside. It prevents water penetration and contamination into the Concrete and increases the Concrete's quality and structural efficiency. In this research, silica and titanium dioxide nanoparticle coatings have been used due to their suitable electrical and thermal properties, resistance to oxidation, corrosion, and wear to prevent the corrosion of rebars in Concrete. The results of this method show that these nanoparticles significantly improve the corrosion resistance of rebars.
