  • Fouling of heat exchangers is generated by water-borne deposits, commonly known as foulants including particulate matter from the air, migrated corrosion produces; silt, clays, and sand suspended in water; organic contaminants; and boron based deposits in plants. The fouling is known to interfere with normal flow characteristics and reduce thermal efficiencies of heat exchangers. This paper describes the fouling analysis technique developed in this study which can analyze the thermal performance for heat exchangers and estimate the future fouling variations. To develop the fouling analysis technique fur heat exchangers, fouling factor was introduced based on the ASME O&M codes and TEMA standards. For the purpose or verifying the fouling analysis technique, the routing analyses were performed for four heat exchangers in several nuclear power plants; two residual heat removal heat exchangers of the residual heat removal system and two component cooling water heat exchangers of the component cooling water system.

  • A multi-purpose research reactor called KMRR has been developed by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute(KAERI) to generate a maximum thermal output of 30 MW. As a part of thermal hydraulics study, pressure drop characteristics of the longitudinally finned fuel rod bundles were experimentally investigated in a recirculating water test loop. The present study is focused on the investigation of fin effects on pressure drop and the development of pressure drop correlation for the finned rod bundles in a wide range of flow conditions. Friction factor correlations for each design of the finned rod bundles are developed. The value of friction factor for the finned rod bundles was higher than the analytical solution (64/Re) of laminar circular channel new but became lower than the Blasius equation as Reynolds number was increased.

  • This analysis demonstrates the effective removal of heat generated from a solar panel's output degradation factor solar cells (the solar panel's output deterioration factor), and solves the problems of oxidation and corrosion in existing metal heat sinks. The heat-dissipating test specimen was prepared using carbon materials; then, its thermal conductivity and its effectiveness in reducing temperatures were studied using heat transfer numerical analysis. As a result, the test specimen of the 30g/㎡ basis weight containing 80% of carbon fiber impregnated with carbon ink showed the highest thermal conductivity 6.96 W/(m K). This is because the surface that directly contacted the solar panel had almost no pores, and the conduction of heat to the panels appeared to be active. In addition, a large surface area was exposed to the atmosphere, which is considered advantageous in heat dissipation. Finally, numerical analysis confirmed the temperature reduction effectiveness of 2.18℃ in a solar panel and 1.08℃ in a solar cell, depending on the application of heat dissipating materials.

  • Techniques of thermal analyses such as DSC and TGA have been used in the study of activation energy (Ea) and frequency factor (A) depending on the particle size of RDX and HMX. Activation energy and frequency factor were calculated by Kissinger's method and Vyazovkin's method. As the particle size of RDX increased, TGA showed activation energy increased, but DSC didn't show. However, In case of HMX, as the particle size increased, both of DSC and TGA showed increase in activation energy. Moreover, Vyazovkin's method can obtain activation energy and mechanism according to decomposition of RDX and HMX.

  • The summer climate is very hot and humid in Korea. Humidity is an important factor in determining thermal comfort. Recently, research on dehumidification device development has been attempted to save the energy required for operating the dehumidifier. Existing dehumidification systems have disadvantages such as wasting energy to drive the compressor. Meanwhile, dehumidification systems with membranes can dehumidify humid air without increasing the dry bulb temperature. Therefore. they don't have to consume cooling energy. In this paper, the installation conditions for a membrane system were analyzed to improve the shape and optimum performance of the system. The results showed that the distance between elements was the critical system design factor, and that a distance of 20 mm was the optimal condition for the pressure drop and flow characteristics of the internal air flow.

  • [ $BaTi_4O_9$ ] thin film were grown on $Pt/Ti/SiO_2/Si$ substrate using rf magnetron sputter, and the microstructure and dielectric properties of the thin films were investigated. For the film grown at $350^{\circ}C$ and rapidly thermal annealed at $900^{\circ}C$, the $BaTi_5O_{11}$ Phase was formed. However, the $BaTi_4O_9$ phase was formed when the growing temperature exceeded $450^{\circ}C$ The dielectric constant of the $BaTi_4O_9$ thin film grown at $550^{\circ}C$ and rapidly thermal annealed at $900^{\circ}C$ was about 40 at low frequency range($100kHz{\sim}1MHz$) and 36 at microwave range($1{\sim}10GHz$) which is very close to that of the bulk $BaTi_4O_9$ phase. The dissipation factor was very low, about 0.005 at low frequency as well as microwave range.

  • In the previous paper, we already discussed about the factor effected upon the initial maximum value of heat flux ($q_{max}$). Thermal conductivity, thermal transmittance and surface air cavity of wool fabrics were examind and their correlation to the $q_{max}$ was also studied In this study, the other factor was examined which had on effect upon the qmaf of an objective measure of warm/cool feeling. It was studied that the qmax correlated to the surface sturucture parameters (compression, friction, smoothness, roughness, thickness and weight). It was concerned to the degree of warm/cool feeling when we touched hand on fabrics. We selected twenty sorts of pure wool woven fabrics for men's fall-winter cloth (all Wool). The conclusions are as follow; 1. There was a good correlation between the $q_{max}$ and the compression property. 2. The surface structure parameters, smoothness and roughness, made various effects on the $q_{max}$, when the samples touched on a thin copper plate. So, there was not a certain correla-tion to the $q_{max}$.

  • In this paper, heat transfer coefficients were measured in a channel with one side dimpled surface. The sphere type dimples were fabricated and the diameter and depth of dimple was 16mm and 4mm, respectively. Two channel heights of about 0.6 and 1.2 time of the dimple diameter, two dimple configuration were tested. The Reynolds numbers based on the channel hydraulic diameter was varied from 30000 to 50000. The improved hue detection based transient liquid crystal technique was used in the heat transfer measurement. Heat transfer measurement results showed that high heat transfer was induced downstream of dimples due to flow reattachment. Due to the flow recirculation on the upstream side in the dimple, the heat transfer coefficient was very low. As the Reynolds increased, the overall heat transfer coefficients also increased. With same dimple arrangement, the heat transfer coefficients and the thermal performance factor were higher for the lower channel height. As the distance between dimples became smaller, the overall heat transfer coefficient and the thermal performance factor were increased.

  • The purpose of this study was performed to quantitatively measure the thermal conductivity of poultry slaughter waste with variation of reaction temperature for optimal design of thermal hydrolysis reactor. We continuously quantified the thermal conductivity of dehydrated sludge related to the reaction temperature. As the reaction temperature increased, the dehydrated sludge is thermally liquefied under high temperature and pressure by the thermal hydrolysis reaction. Therefore, the bond water in the sludge cells comes out as free water, which changes the dehydrated sludge from a solid phase to slurry of a liquid phase. As a result, the thermal conductivity of the its sludge was more than 2.11 times lower than that of the water at $20^{\circ}C$. However, the thermal conductivity of the sludge approached to $0.677W/m{\cdot}^{\circ}C$ of water at $200^{\circ}C$, experimentally substantiating liquefaction of the dehydrated sludge. Therefore, we confirmed that the change in physical properties due to thermal hydrolysis appears to be an important factor for heat transfer efficiency. And the thermal conductivity function related to reaction temperature was derived to give the boundary condition for the optimal design of the thermal hydrolysis reactor. The consistency of the calculated function was 99.69%.
